Sure hendrix trumps knofler by some margin, but the topic was corgan v knofler. I'm not a big fan of Dire Straits (boring!), but anyone who thinks corgan is a better guitarist has rocks in their head.
The other three you mention are very good stand alone guitarists, but they all produced a lot of crap w anky music.

My favourite one would be "Weapon of Choice" by Fatboy Slim. You know, the one where Christopher Walken is flying and everything. To this day I still don't understand it but still love it.
