They (or their singer/leader Euronymous) started the 'Inner Circle' in Norway that basically kicked off the 90's BM revival.
The inner circle were responsible for all manner of nasty sh1t including Church burnings, terrorism, and a couple of murders.
Euronymous was himself murdered by another member (Varg) whose band (Burzum) you may have heard of.

Emperor (who if you don't know, you'd better start listening too!) were also in the Inner Circle. Their guitarist did a stint in prison for burning down a church, and their drummer is still in jail for murder.
