View Full Version : South Africa threaten to boycott future tours in Aus.

Gerald Majola, the CEO of the South African board, has threatened to boycott future tours of Australia if the racial abuse towards his players continues.
Majola, who is in Perth to watch South Africa play Sri Lanka in the VB Series, was quoted in the Cape Times as saying: "It is very serious and if it continues, yes, we would look very seriously about whether we return here for another series."
South Africa have been targeted by a tiny minority of racists during their tour. The worst incidents occurred during the Test at Perth in December when several players were called "kaffirs" and "kaffir boetties" - they also complained about similar incidents at Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney.
"It is not right when a country has a history like ours. It is something that we never thought we would hear about," Majola explained. "The sad thing is, it has continued around Australia. It hasn't just been limited to one state or one city."
South Africa's management were advised against making the original incidents at Perth public for fear of triggering copycat abuse on other grounds. But after consulting the players, the decision was reached that such matters needed to be flagged.
While there is no mistaking Majola's anger at the incidents, it is unlikely that South Africa would shun future tours, not least because it would leave them facing a hefty fine by the ICC for failing to honour their commitments under the Future Tours Programme.
But Cricket Australia are taking the matter seriously and a review of security on grounds is underway at the moment.
Thoughts?

what a load of bull, there, thats my thoughts !
Let them boycott and be fined and lose ranking points. Then Australia can tour there, the players can say they are being racially abused by the South African crowds, but as a group they've decided they aren't fairies and will stay on. :thumbsu:

Good. They are boring anyway.
South Africa are the biggest bunch of whingers.
Take their netball skirts and f**k off home if you can't hack it.
A few people in a crowd abuse them and they sook.

ICC investigates allegations of racism
Cricinfo staff
January 31, 2006
The ICC has asked Goolam Vahanvati, India's solicitor general, to investigate incidents of racial abuse that have taken place in Australia. His appointment follows an official complaint from the South African board.
Vahanvati will speak to venue staff, Cricket Australia representatives and ICC officials during his visit. He will then travel to South Africa and Sri Lanka to interview players and team officials from all three sides that participated in the recent Test and ODI series before reporting back to the ICC in March.
"Racism in any form is abhorrent and everyone in cricket is unhappy with the way in which players from international teams have been subjected to racist abuse in Australia," said Malcolm Speed, the ICC chief executive. "The actions of what would seem to be a small number of people are reflecting poorly on Australia and on cricket. It is essential that this issue is addressed.
"What is now important is that the ICC is provided with a clear and independent understanding of exactly what has taken place to ensure that cricket is able to respond appropriately."
Speed added that the Australian, Sri Lankan and South African boards had all offered their support. "Since the first incident was reported, Cricket Australia, Sri Lanka Cricket, the United Cricket Board and their players have been united in condemning this sort of behaviour. The entire international cricket community is united in its commitment to doing everything possible to eradicate any racist abuse.
"Once the ICC executive board has received this report, we will be in a position to identify what further steps cricket can take to tackle this issue before it spreads beyond the incidents that have taken place in Australia."
Vahanvati was part of a two-man panel that investigated allegations of racism in cricket in Zimbabwe in 2004.

"kaffirs" and "kaffir boetties"
I've never heard of those words before, don't know what they mean, neither would 99% of the Australian Population. So it must be Afrikkans, coming from the South African ex-pats.

F/D I get called "wog" all the time by "aussies", despite the fact that I was born in this country and only speak English - and have no cultural attachments to any foreign civilisations. because of my appearance, people call me a hurtful word. Big Deal. Grow a thicker skin over words.

It is poor form. Most of these racist comments have been Afrikaan (sp?) words, i hadn't even heard of them until they started reporting them all over the papers, and neither had 90% of the Aussie public.
For them to threaten to boycott tours because of a few expat south africans have axes to grind, is very poor form.

That's not even close to being the point. The issue is, South African crowds (and crowds the world over) racial abuse players from opposing countries, too. So, maybe the SAF'ers should worry about getting their own crowds under control before launching attacks on those of other countries. It's not a case of 'oh they're racist so we can be racist too', its their whinging about it that makes the whole thing hypocritical. If South African crowds were a bunch of angels, they'd be entitled to make such comments about Aussie crowds. Until such time, they should grow and spine, shut their faces, and play the damn game.

Such because some of our crowds are bad doesnt mean we cannot complain about the Aussie crowds, you know what would solve this? If Australia (Any country actually) would STFU when at the cricket.

Racism is in Soccer crowds, particuarly in Italy.
Racism is eveywhere, so no one is more racist than the other.
The police are in number at Melbourne games, but they seem to just kick out then arrest or assert punishment for racist behaviour.
Cricket Australia should give Security and Police more power at the cricket, and should inforce more punishment to racists.

Its not jealousy about their success, its called having an inferiority complex, the fact that they get that when they are amongst the few (that aren't in the vast majority) that don't barrack for Australia on this board. Because of that, I think they would be still making similar anti Australia tirades if Australia wasn't the best in the world too.

Just my thoughts here given that it was ex pat south africans doing the racist taunting here, shouldnt some navel gazing be done by those that previously condoned the stance that many of these "supporters" held (ie by and large those that grew up and supported apartheid in south africa)
I would also like an investigation to be done by the South Africian cricket authorities how much of a role that their previously held views impacted on the way that these cricketers were treated by previous residents of the country.
I would fully agree with life bans for those caught being racist towards other nations cricketers its just not on in todays society, but one must wonder how much of the racist taunting came from fellow south africans?

If you want to discuss this topic then do it, but whinging and saying "All you do is bag Australia" is not good enough, how many others bag South Africa?
Its a WORLD game, so expect to see Australia get bagged out a few times.

So he should leave just because he disagrees with racism in Australia and doesn't go for Australia in cricket? I thought Australia had freedom of speech but maybe not. We should all just agree that noone here is racist (its obviously just South African Expats  ) and we should all support Australia..
I am sure you would like that Hitler.

Not sure if someone has already mentioned this but touring teams would never boycott Australia - it is far too lucrative for them
well you never know cause noothing would get made out of a aussie getting racially velefied and im sure those who have a problem with aussies being racist wouldnt care if the shoe is on the other foot and we would be told to get over it.
Omg i can't believe i have to share oxygen with you. So you are saying that everyone else should just shut up and tolerate the racial abuse from austraalians b/c we don't have a problem with it here as its part of funney way of life.

I'm an Australian now?
Tell me besides from Footy how I am Australian?
My culture is completely different to Australians, and I mean completely.
I dont celebrate Christman, nor Easter and I dont really give a F**K who becomes President etc etc.
I am South African/Somalian.
For someone who supposedly "loves" the country, you seem pretty ignorant.

First African, second Australian is my view.
Feel the love!

Where did I say you hated the country? All I was pointing out is that you're quite happy to take advantage of the benefits open to Australian citizens whilst hypocritically identifying yourself as "African First, Australian Second" and display a ridiculous ignorance of how the country is run.
Poor old illiterate fahmi.
