Tiger cub feeling right at home

Richmond fans need not worry about their top draft pick Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls developing a case of homesickness with the exciting Western Australian revelling in his new surrounds at Punt Road.

The 17-year-old from East Perth was taken at pick eight in last year's draft and is already being hailed as a speed machine, having ranked first in agility and second for speed at last year's NAB AFL Draft Camp.

Those results already have seen the youngster compared to the Tigers' number one draft pick last year in Brett Deledio and Richmond fans will catch their first glimpse of Oakley-Nicholls during next Wednesday's intra-club match at the Tigers' community camp in Ballarat.

While the move to the hustle and bustle of Melbourne is often daunting for young players from interstate, Oakley-Nicholls is revelling in it and is now doing to his utmost to earn himself a senior call-up for the upcoming NAB Cup.

"I would love to get a chance in the pre-season," he said.

"We have been playing a couple of little ten minute games here and there, the pace of it is full on but I have been going okay."

After initially staying with the family of teammate Will Thursfield, Oakley-Nicholls is now settled in his own place with his mother, who arrived from Perth three weeks ago.

"I love it over here," he said of Melbourne.

"I am so glad I got selected by an AFL club in Melbourne, it's full on here (compared to Perth) but I like it here because footy means everything."

Oakley-Nicholls, who played senior football in the WAFL last year as well as representing Western Australia in the under 18 championships, is a half-back flanker who can also play in the midfield.

And just like Deledio last year, he promises to add some pace and flair to the Tigers - admitting he loves to play the way Shaun Burgoyne does for Port Adelaide.

"I like the way Shaun Burgoyne runs off the backline and that's the way I like to play," he said.

"I like to run off every time I get the chance but I don't like to see my opponents get much of the ball either."

Sounds like he will be a good player for us and will give us a lot of run through the middle :thumbsu: Hopefully we see him in the NAB Cup

Yeah looking forward to seeing him play. He's painfully thin at the present so i wouldn't like to see him cop a full blooded tackle - could snap in half.
Positives are he's quick, tall and can do this:

I think some blokes can get away with playing before they've developed. Hopefully JON is one of them. How many pictures did you take Grenade?

He loves it over here at the moment, but we've had nothing but bloody hot weather since he's arrived. Wait until it's 5 degrees and your waiting for a taxi out the front of the Star Bar or Depot on a Sunday night in nothing but a t-shirt. Best get Shulzy to drive you around everywhere so this doesn't happen.

Over 100, but I had to trash half of them due to blurriness plus the women in front of me kept getting their heads in my shots.
I was firing away like a madman - needed a serious footy fix.

I was really excited about the prospect of Fremantle drafting this kid at number 10. You guys nabbed JON just before we got a chance. A couple things caught my attention though. Before he was drafted he was interviewed on channel 10.

He still sleeps with an Eagles dooner. His room ressembled that of a 10 year old. A low level of maturity is a bit of a worry in new recruits these days. 1 big positive you can pull from that article is his mother has come to stay with him.

Probably needed given his maturity. Had she not come across, i doubt the kid could have coped on his own.

Anyway good luck this season, except for the games you play Fremantle.

i very much doubt he would have the eagles dooner now.. he may have had it before in the hope of getting drafted by them.. in the sense of maturity he seems to act in a mature manor around the club.

goodluck to you for the season 2:thumbsu:

Yes, he didnt look very, how can I put it, 'worldly'. He did come across as pretty immature and something just didnt look right for a 17yr old bloke. There is nothing wrong with him but if ever a kid looked a candidate to returning home, thats what his room would look like.
