Tiger cubs to take on leadership role

Richmond is set to introduce a junior leadership group within its playing ranks.
And, it’s the Club’s current senior playing leadership group, comprising captain Kane Johnson, vice-captain Nathan Brown and deputy vice-captains Joel Bowden, Matthew Richardson and Darren Gaspar, which has devised the plan to fast-track the next generation of leaders at Tigerland.
“Because we’ve got such an old group and such a young group of players, we felt we needed to develop a group in between that could take over from us and give them roles now to build their leadership skills. We just thought that was a really important area for the Club’s future,” Tiger skipper Johnson said.
The senior leadership group will announce the junior leaders during Richmond’s Community Camp at Ballarat next week (February 6-9).
“There will be about half a dozen players involved, but they don’t even know about this yet. It’ll all be revealed in Ballarat,” Johnson said.
“The boys that we’ve chosen are all good kids, mainly around the 23-24 year-old bracket, with one or two perhaps a bit younger.
“As part of their junior leadership role, they’ll do certain things around the Club, but they will also receive help in developing their leadership skills.
“I just think it’s going to work very well . . .”
Johnson added that the senior leadership group had been charged with other key areas of responsibility during the pre-season, and these would also be on the agenda during next week’s Ballarat Community Camp.
“We (the leadership group) didn’t have such a big role to play last year in terms of off-field planning. It was more a case of get out and play and lead the boys on the ground,” Johnson said.
“But over this pre-season, ‘Plough’ has handed over a lot of the responsibility to us.
“We’ve had to come up with where we think we need to go in the future in terms of goals, values, codes of conduct and other applicable areas.
“It’s been an interesting process, which has given us a lot more work to do outside of training, but I’ve really enjoyed it and I think it’s improved us as a group.
“Things such as holding meetings and coming up with processes together also help you with your life after football.
“It’s really in-house . . . the more control we’ve got of it, the more control we’ll have out on the ground, and that can only benefit us.”
That's good to hear.

Hall maybe.
IMO the more responsibilty he is given the better he will be. He just strikes me as one of those guys.
Tuck also, he had to work harder than anyone on the list to keep his spot and get back into AFL. Might be able to learn the new kids a thing or two about don't just assume that you will play AFL because you get drafted, don't waste it etc.
Don't think you're "Steve-o" from Jackass!

yeah, the boys that we have chosen are all good kids, and i guess that also would make the boys that we havent chosen feel really like good kids too huh?
So Plough has handed the responsiblity of nurturing the youngsters, to the leadership group huh?
Kind of thought thought his job was the "alot" part, and the leadership group had a few other more pressing matters to attend to, like winning bloddy games. ;)

I also thought a big part of Richmonds next few years was to regain a winning culture and ensure many years of success.
Maybe they will give it to Schulz as well because his 1st few seasons have been tough and he will be a good mentor to the next batch of them coming through

That's what I like about Terry Wallace.
He can take a cliche that's already tired and ridiculously over-used, and inject new life into it.
What this really means is that Terry will now go down in history as the first person to introduce the concept of middle management to a football team. :D

kind of thought that was a big part of TW's job description for the next few years. You are talking about the successful implementation of his job description. I think this tiger cub thing is just a "feel good" piece for a lot tiger heads to say, "That's good to hear". I tend to be one that waits to say that when the reports suggests "Tigers regain a winning culture and ensure many years of success". Comes with the territory of the last 20 years, i guess, you tend to not get to carried away with the pre-season decorations. ;)

I know that most of the things to come out this time of year are just hot air and bull sh1t. But you gotta pump up the club and sell memberships somehow.
Also I feel there is nothing wrong with given people around the club more responsiblilty especially when it will help when the new contract deals come around.

I see this as another ploy by Plough to bring the team together as one, even if it means bringing in a "junior heirarchy". One point I remember Terry making when he first started at Tigerland (other than it resembling something from Chernobyl) was how quiet and timid the place sounded, even at training. It was mentioned on another thread that at training recently the players seemed to be more united. We want our lads to be working as a team, and by filling the void between the older and younger brigade, this could further the "mateship" between the playing group.
A bit of a conspiracy, gay love theory, but I have a feeling he wants them busting a nut for each other out there, and will invent any b------t method to try and start the ball rolling there.

whats so wrong with feel good pieces?
also does this mean that because its just a feel good piece that its something the club isnt really implementing meaning that only the older leadership group are having a say in the off field planning?
whats wrong with the coach asking the players to be more the face of the club in off field matters? I dont think it entirely says Plough has washed his hands clean of nuturing the kids, that perhaps is somethign you might be implying. Also who is to say that when these things occur it doesnt go through the clubs heirachy before hand when these " feel good pieces" are released.
Does this mean you would prefer the club to shut up and not say a word about these things, just keep them inhouse?
I dont think there is that big an issue regarding these warm and fuzzies the club comes out with, its all about exposure IMO the club is doing its job by continually being in the spotlight for good reasons instead of the bad reasons, it would also keep our sponsors happy too.

sounds like a good idea. we need to fast track some of these youngsters so that we can fill the void when the current leaders retire. some really good strong on field leadership for the future could come out of this, and although leadership skills are partly a personality thing, they are mostly learned, i dont subscribe to the 'born leader' or not a leader at all theory.

PRR, if you just happened to set foot on this planet and hadnt heard a tiger cliche being trotted out again, nothing wrong whatsoever.
You ask what's wrong with the coach asking the players to be the face of the club in off field matters? well, i kind of thought they were the face of the club in off field matters as it was, so what's new?
On your question about whether i would prefer the club shut up, yes, i would prefer if they kept them in house, business is business and you get the business done without any fanfare and then when the business is succesful things take care of themsleves. I am one of those supporters that would rather have a commando styled, no frills, type playing group, earning the respect of the footy world by their actions on and off the field. Not getting promoted at every chance, inflating hopes of supporters, with the chance that the deflation will be extreme.
Exposure for good reasons instead of bad? exposure to who? us? the rest of the footy world? dont you get it? we have been the butt of many jokes for to long, purely because we are like this, we portray all these niceties, we broadcast them, and they tend to dissappear into the ether of yet another medoicre season. ;)

does it all really matter ?
I could argue the point a bit but I cant be stuffed :D
I'm sure there are many here that may agree with you but I'm sure there is just as many who would agree with me, that its all harmless and just letting us know the club is trying to continually come up with different ideas to improve itself whether its significant or not on the scale of things.

for sure there are PRR, i will take a punt and suggest that the majority of those are the people that see a 15 goal loss as a positive, since we didnt lose by 16. Have you run into those types at the G in the last few years? You tend to become that way when you have an inferiority complex. ;)
