Guys, can anyone tell me if a batsman hits the ball & the ball then hits a close in fielder on his helmet & then the ball is caught after it has ricochetted off the fieldsmans helmet - is it out?

Yes.
I thought off the helmet s not out. Thought the situation happened in a Test in England in 2001 and was given not out.
Yep ... its out.
other rule with helmet is one is hit on ground (ie the one not in use hiding behind w/k) 5 runs, i think.

id say not out cause the fielder is wearing a helmet. if it hit him on the head without a helmet then its out. thats my understanding of it.
Id say yes, if he is still wearing it, however if it bounced off the helmet on the ground then I wouldnt think so
May as well put it in here, something that I wondered last week where it nearly happened
The batsman hits the ball it bounces back towards the stump, now obviously the batsman has the right to hit the ball away from his stumps, but what if the 2nd hit of the ball goes in the air to a fielder, is that still out?
Yep, aslong as the helmet is on and it hits them its out.. it is just like it coming off any other part of the body and being caught.. However if the helmet (or anything such as a hat, shoes, sunglass etc) is on the ground and it comes off it 5pts is rewarded

A ball ricochetting off a fieldsman's helmet is not out. The logic is that the (a) the fieldsman would probably not be standing where he was without a helmet, and (b) the ball would most likely carry further off the helmet than straight off a skull.
If the ball ricochettes of the batsman's helmet and is caught, then he is out.

Yep, that is my understanding too - off a fielders helmet is not out.
wow, confusion now.
so if it hits a fielders cap , then what??
i would've thought off a fielders helmet its out, so what if its off a keepers helmet standing up to a quick or spinner???
the helmet placed directly behind the keeper on the ground is 5 runs i know that much and is deemed dead once the ball hits it.

Check out Law 32:3 (e) (http://www.lords.org/laws-and-spirit/laws-of-cricket/laws/law-32-caught,58,AR.html)
3. A fair catch
A catch shall be considered to have been fairly made if
(e) a fielder catches the ball after it has touched an umpire, another fielder or the other batsman. However, it is not a fair catch if the ball has touched a protective helmet worn by a fielder, although the ball remains in play.

As Fred Yoemans pointed out - it is NOT OUT if the ball is caught off a fieldsmans helmet. I'm as surprised as some of you guys. I was adament it was out & the confusion here is not unlike the confusion we had on Saturday. Cricket hey? It's a marvellous game.
