View Full Version : Do Australia lack a quality slipper???

I was just thinking that the ODI side especially lacks a real quality slipper. Warne and Haydos in the test are good but i dont think either are great! Hussey is a great fielder but doesnt strike me as a mark taylor type first slip!!!
Most other nations seems to have some real quality, India have dravid, England has freddie, the Windies have Gayle, Fleming for New Zealand, not sure bout the paki's??? And south Afirca have Smith and Kemp who both seem pretty good!!

Do we have any real good young guys coming thru who can field in the slips?? I know Cam White is pretty good there!! what about Jaques or anyone else??

Is it important to have a quality slips fieldsman, I mean the Aussie side still do pretty well and have close to the best 4 all round fielders in the game in Ponting, Clarke, Symonds and hussey!! So do we need one??

Other than Haydos and Warnie, Whiteys probably the best in the country.

I reckon Hayden's a bloody good slipper, and Warne goes well also. Dont think its too important in the one day game

white only got a game due to his slips fielding.

our team is that good that we can make up for it and it doesnt cost us much compared to other teams.

Get over White! He will never cement a spot in the Aussie side! I know his bowling and batting stink but trying to say he is the countrys best slipper is beyond ridiculous.

White is just like Warney in the slipping department. Safe hands and moves well and now needs to work on his bowling and improving his batting. :thumbsu:

Might just be the attribute that forces him into the team ... ;)

Im not sold on warne as a first slip, he takes some good ones but seems to drop some sitters as well, two i can think of are pietersen in the last test and flemo's second hatrick. Maybe im being a bit nostalgic or being harsh on warnie but taylor and waugh at first and second slip i dont think dropped anywhere near as many

I dont think you can go past Hayden at first slip , I shall never forget the image of him squatting in his catching position at first slip with Warnie's hat on his head as Warne bowls from the other end ...

Hayden would field all day at 1st slip if he wasnt such a good gully fielder.

And warne wasn't in the side!!!

Every side lacks a good slipper. It is more exposed these days.

Cameron White did get in for two reasons. a) Spinning Hopeful, and b) Slips Fielder.

I can't recall the fat ex-captain ever dropping one, and remember a low-scoring ODI at the SCG against the Windies where IIRC he was named man of the match after making just 9 runs and taking three or four absolute blinders at 1st slip.

Waugh took some beauties too, but dropped the odd dolly, as many slippers do. Not Tubby though.

Admittedly, G.Chappell and Simpson were before my time, but since I've watched cricket (1985ish) Tubby has been the best by so far it's not funny, from any country.

I personally thought Mark Waugh was the best fieldsman, certainly in catching terms that ive seen in the aussie team!

That's why the supersub rule suits him perfectly ;)

Could you point out where I said he was the countrys best Slip fieldsman?
