Eddie McGuire's new job in the bag (http://heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,18059920%255E661,00.html) - Mathew Charles and Sam Edmund, Herald Sun, 7 Feb 2006
EDDIE McGuire has almost certainly landed the top job at Channel 9. Sources close to Nine's parent company, Publishing & Broadcasting Limited, insist the appointment will go ahead...
...McGuire looks certain to step down as president of Collingwood, with board member Gary Pert and player manager Craig Kelly – both former Magpie stars – mentioned as possible successors.
"It's sad that while he was here he never saw a premiership. If ever a president of a footy club deserved a flag it was Ed." - Joffa Corfe
This will mean an "end to an era". Jeff 'Joffa' Corfe said. McGuire has had a great run in the media, and will be unable to host Who Wants to be a Millionaire, and The Footy Show, which has Garry Lyon almost certain to take over. But his role as President of Collingwood, a role which he has succeeded in and has taken Collingwood from a troublesome period both financially and performance wise, but Eddie has done a magnificant role to not only help them get out of trouble, but make a statement. The club has seen a shift of headquarters, from the ever so great Victoria Park in Collingwood, to Melbourne's Olympic Park, at Lexus Centre.
The two people in line for President of Collingwood as listed by the Herald Sun, Gary Pert and Craig Kelly, two defenders in the 90's.

I would have no problems with either Pert or Kelly as President, but it will be sad to see Ed go. No doubt he will stay involved in the club though.

He hasn't resigned yet, and will stay on in my opinion.

Yeah, I hope he does, I don't know what exactly his new job will take him too in levels of time off. He will certainly stay involved in the club though.

Even if he does leave. Hes only the president, he doesnt go out there and play and thats what matters.

He'll keep feeding us sponsorships and Swanny can do the rest.
We need a token President and I am more than happy to stand.
According to the Age he will give up his on air commitments but remain president of Collingwood.
We'll have to wait and see. But if he leaves Collingwood he will leave it in good shape with plenty of quality candidates lining up to take his place and make a seamless transition.

I'd rather have Fanny.
Be sad to see him go,he's certainly done the world of good for the Pies.

I guess that is the hope, and I am sure Eddie wouldn't quit unless he is forced to.
I'd rather have Fanny.

Ed has done so much for the CFC, he can leave if he wants. Everyone at Collingwood will miss him, but we need to move on one day - whether that day is now or five years down the track.

The world won't end if he leaves us. Even if he does, I wouldn't be surprised if he comes back one day. He'd have the feeling that there some unfinished business at the club.
I think if he does decide to leave he will stay heavily involved in 2006 or even 2007 (but less so) to train the new president. I would like the new president to come from within the current regime so that they can pick up where Eddie left off and continue in his direction, I don't know why Sheehan's article didn't consider Greg Swann, I think he is the obvious replacement.

Swann or me. Eitherway, you need a gun businessman in there.
I'll only draw a modest salary. $4-500K should see me out.

I'd vote for you if your salary was $4.

As of right now his intention is to stay on as President. That may change but certainly at the moment the Herald Sun is wide of the mark in stating so definitively that he will be vacating.
I'd vote for you if your salary was $4.
For $4 I can give you a Kevin Rose style regime.
For $500,000 I can get wasted on coke every day.

Good luck to Ed with whatever he does. One thing it shows is that all good things must come to an end, sadly.
I do hope he remains, but...

Will be terrible to lose Eddie.
But he will still be our unofficial president, still working behind the scenes with Swanny, I'm sure.

Dont worry, I will lead the club forwards.
Lonie IMDB.com isn't the greatest thing to quote for accuracy.
It can be edited by almost anyone. Someone wrote a fake Futurama movie plot just to prove that anyone can put anything on the site.

Yeah, but I was just trying to prove a point. That is the most recognised site, for quotes!
So I assume Eddie will still be commentating for Ch9?

I would happily take over, all I ask is $100,000 a year and all you can eat Parmas :)
I would then appoint David Cloke as coach of Collingwood and we will win the next 4 AFL premierships with Jason as captain, Cam and trav as Vice captains :)
What does Sheehan know about Collingwood? Nothing.
We all know Sheehan hates Collingwood in general and Eddie in particular, he probably just wrote the article to try and destabalise us.
I think Eddie should stay this year at least after that if he finds he can't put the time in then he should step down. That way he could also groom a successor in case they are required.

As far as I've heard he has to leave all his on air roles if he gets the job, certainly Footy Show and Millionaire have been mentoined.
I could be wrong though am sadly out of the media loop as I moved to NSW in the off season, especially with the season approaching am feeling very much out of the loop.

I would rather keep swann as ceo . While it isn't as high profile it is just as important and Swanns job is to keep the club financial and he is the best at it in the league. I would be rapt if Ned was the next pres. Very media Savy and very switched on. He has made a mint with Elite sports so obviouslt knows what he is doing. Also seems to be one of the few managers that has the respect of most in the football community . Ed will not be around forever so when the time comes vote for ned i say!!

Disappointing if so. The Footy Show won't be the same without him.

In my opinion teh president should be a public figure with dosh and connections. Maguire has the best of all three, hopefully he will stay. he has done such a good job, that i reckon he should be presdient of australia

Maybe if he was the "presdient" of Australia he could over haul the education system, eh?
