I am working on my own project to take off a load of somewhat, boredom, and be more constructive. With the DVD of the 1990 Grand Final, I have decided to work on Collingwood Player Statistics. It should be interesting.

I would also, however, like to see some discussion on the game, as in the time frame, I suppose. Wish me luck, I have done the first 10 mins already.

I have watched this DVD so many times it's not funny. I always remember in the first few minutes Kerrison starting off with a bang and the stats show that with him being equal top possesion getter for us.

Gee, did Salmon just dominate in (so far) the first 20 minutes. He took 4 marks inside F50 and has kicked the Essendon score so far. Too tall, 206cm as a FF. Also Madden posing a threat in the ruck, with Manson getting beaten. Monkey on the woodwork.

Told you, that's one thing that sticks out in my memory. Salmon had already had Christian moved off him, and then he beat Kelly for his second goal, and we were thinking he was going to kick 5+. We were wondering where our goals would come from.

Also, look at the frees, nine already in twenty minutes!

ive got a question about kerro's point at the start - was it touched by monkey or was it a behind?

Lonie_from_50
10 Feb 2006, 17:26
Yeah, I know, like...gee, on video, it is impossible to tell. The ball is rolling through the goalsquare, and they view Daniher chasing it, yet...the umpire signalls it was touched. Therefore, did Monkey touch it - I dunno, it was 25m from the goal-line, pretty big call!

What a half of footy. 6 goals to 1 great goal to Kickett. Shaw, Millane, Francis, Russell and McGuane have been the Pies best, all players there dominating play. Collingwood have been applying much more pressure, with 30 tackles, Francis the most dominant with 6. Monkhorst played ruck for the whole quarter and had 14 hitouts in the quarter.

What a period, yet again. Starcevich gets cleaned up and can't take his kick after collapsing once again after a hit to the head. McGuane takes the kick from the 50m Penalty and goals. 2 minutes after Starcevich goes off the ground, Manson is replaced as soon as quick as he said hello to Daniher, and Gavin Brown got a huge reception making way onto the ground, after being concussed in the Quarter Time Brawl.

it was a high posession game back then!

I have noticed that in a number of matches I have watched on tape whether it be SANFL or VFL/AFL that there were fewer (and shorter) stoppages and a more continuous play before say the mid-90s. The record I know of with the most possessions in a match by both teams is 789 - 396 to Essendon and 393 to Adelaide in Round 9 1993 and in the SANFL it is 786 by Port and West in Round 1 of that year.

P.S - these are newspaper stats.

13 Feb 2006, 15:42
Looking at the tackle count, another thing I have noticed is that the tackles in that era more often produced a free kick or play on situation than now. i.e. less ball ups.

That stat of 59 tackles says it all. The kick/handball ratio is good, and the sheer number of goals from frees and 50s indicates what a harsh game it was then.

I have almost every game Collingwood has won since about 1989. Of course, they aren't full replays, because until Foxtel came along with full match coverage, we just had the 90 minute 6pm-7:30pm Saturday Night Reply on Seven, so there are years of just 'highlights' of wins, but then I think the last four or so years we've got most wins. All taped straight from TV or Foxtel.

Not sure what to do with them all, though. Especially since pre-1990 is on Beta!

A fair difference in price between VHS and DVD, so therefore, probably best to go VHS. Will have to stock up on spare VHS's to tape matches during the season. We have a DVD recorder, but it is a hassle that it fuks up reception on normal tv, and the amount of cords out of the back is huge, and also, i have no idea how to work the thing. Would rather on VHS, considering burnt DVD's have inconsistent life spans.

Very big collection Luke. I am no-where near that on video's...i had plenty years ago, but as we know, they get lost, taped over, etc. My main thing of a collection is Herald Sun Sport (Monday's are the key)...have plenty, one day i will count them :p

I could take a photo of my Herald-Sun sports sections but it is too embarassing...let's just say, Sat, Sun, Mon since 1996. :o

(Those prices were from a while ago though, not sure about now)

That's awesome Hoggy :p

I started collecting them in 97, but really started to collect in 99, whereas, I have most since then. It is a good resource I guess, but that day will come when it will be chuck out time, I am sure, just hope it never comes :p

I know what you mean! I have stupidly taped over plenty of things (plenty from 1997). And then some in 2002 and 2003! I hate it when I can't find things on videos and then I realise I was stupid.....

I love the papers. I began collecting in 1997, but have lost plenty of them. I used to cut out every Collingwood picture, good or bad, and place them on my wall. I still have a few from that era, but most are now in my scrapbook.

I currently have a massive box in my cupboard (huge) of newspapers from 1997-2006.

I forgot to say I had every one from 1991 onwards (I still have crucial 1990GF news clippings and liftouts) but Mum threw out five years worth of liftouts. :(

Round 1 1989, 10 point victory over the reigning champions (Hawthorn) at Waverley...you got that?

Funny thing, I have a vague memory of that game being on tape at my mum's place. Great game, I was there behind the goals Hawthorn was kicking too in the final quarter. On the tape Mckenna is having paroxysms, because he loves both clubs. "Its pick-out-Michael-Christian Day!" he cries when Chrisso took a bunch of marks in front of Dunstall.

If you do, any way you could make a torrent of it?

No idea how to do that.

luke,
a torrent is a different way of pirat....errr 'transfering' files.

you go to a website and download a mini file, normally less than a hundred kb.

you use that file in a file sharing program like limewire or kceasy and it specifically targets places the files are stored.

thats my understanding of it, if someone can explain it better feel free.

BitTorrent is a content distribution protocol that enables efficient software distribution and peer-to-peer sharing of very large files, such as entire movies and TV shows, by enabling users to serve as network redistribution points. Rather than having to send a download to each customer requesting it, the distributor or holder of content sends it to one customer who in turn sends it to other customers who together share the pieces of the download back and forth until everyone has the complete download. This makes it possible for the original server to serve many requests for large files without requiring immense amounts of bandwidth. According to reports, a user may expect to see a full-length movie arrive within a few hours.

For an example of a site which has all these type of things...

Hoggy and co.

I bought the 1990 Premiers Pack on VHS (Only on VHS) at the Lexus Centre yesterday. So we can expect the stats up on both the Qualifying Replay and Semi Final wins :thumbsu:

Watched the Second Semi against the Bombers the other week, it was little wonder that Terry Daniher (the dog) king hit Rowdy in the Grand Final the following week.

He was unbelievable in this match, had 10 marks and had banged home five majors in the first half. He was running rings around the Essendon backline. Walsh, Hamilton, Daniher were no match for one G. Brown. He virtually beat the bombers by himself that day (with solid contrubtutions from Dennis Banks, Doug Barwick and Scotty Russell).

I wonder if Greg Anderson the girl still has nightmares about Darren Millane, was sh*t scared of him!

Get the 1990 Series Finals Pack. :thumbsu:Just looked it up on the Name A Game website. Am I correct in saying that it's VHS only? :( :thumbsd:

Yes, correct, considering that was all they had at the Lexus Centre. I would be guessing that if it was on DVD, it may be a little more expensive, but still VHS is better than none I guess.

I am starting to do the stats (Collingwood Only) for the Collingwood v Essendon Semi-Final, including Spoils, 1%ers (excluding spoils), Contested Marks, and my own Ranking System. I will also review the 1990 Grand Final and add the extra statistics.

I guess I will just chuck it in this thread, stupid starting another one I guess...I will identify it as a Semi Final though.

Oh well, I'm sure they'll release it sooner or later...

Out of curiosity, how much was the video version you got from The Lexus Centre?

RRP $59.95

Wouldn't think you could get it cheaper. I was looking at an Inside Football edition from 1997 last night, and on the back page it had the box sets of VHS's, and were $59.95 back then aswell.

As Hoggy said earlier, at Name-A-Game they are working on getting rid of VHS Stock, so maybe one day everything will be DVD, and it will be released, and then again, $60 is as cheap as you can buy it.

1990 Semi-Final
Essendon vs Collingwood

Q1 - 10:00
ESSENDON 1.0.6
COLLINGWOOD 2.2.14

Collingwood started with a bang against Minor Premiers Essendon at the MCG. Skipper Tony Shaw almost kicked a ripper in the early seconds, just for the ball to bounce the other way. Peter Daicos kicked the first goal of the game from a free-kick against Greg Anderson, which to me was very harsh. Daicos slotted a goal, and soon after Gavin Brown kicked the 'Pies second. A free against Gayfer for a push in the back to Derek Kickett set up a chance for goal, and it just sailed through, with the 'Pies in the lead by 8 points. So far Dennis Banks has been the standout, providing good skills and working up the field.
