View Full Version : 1997 GF - Adelaide v St.Kilda

This was the first Grand Final I ever watched live from home, and in full. I have done a statistically revisited thread for the 1990 Grand Final in the Collingwood Board, but I have decided to do the 1997 GF in this board, and to allow everyone have their say.
I will be doing things statistically. In 5 or 10 min spurts (we will see )). Now let's remember, this stats won't be official (they could be), but they are done on video replay, and are 99.9% correct, just like prowess.

This was one of the biggest attending Grand Finals, the biggest crowd since the 1990 Grand Final between Collingwood and Essendon.
98,828 people turned up to witness a historic day. The lead up was amazing. St.Kilda had beat reigning premiers North Melbourne (who would appear in the next 2 Grand Finals) to get in, while Adelaide made it's first Grand Final appearance since joining the league in 1991. They beat the Western Bulldogs the week earlier by just 2 points. St.Kilda would appear in it's first Grand Final since 1971
Robert Harvey had won the Brownlow on the Monday Night, through a suspension to most votes poller Chris Grant. Nicky Winmar had lost his dad though, and was fighting a tough time, playing for the great man. Adelaide had worries heading into the Final, losing Coleman Medallist Tony Modra with a knee injury, rupturing it in the Preliminary Final.

In the first 3 minutes, Adelaide came out of the blocks, but failed to put it on the scoreboard, being 0.4. Jason Heatley kicked the first 2 goals of the game, as St.Kilda started to get on top, but Ellen kicked a goal to steady the ship. All-Australian Shaun Rehn proving too good for Brett Cook in the ruck early.

I do to agree to an extent with Echucaboy. Some of the bold names in the teams were fairly new to the AFL scene, and didn't have the reputation they do now. For us Johnson, Goodwin and Edwards and Hudghton, Hall and Lappin for the Saints are examples.
A few SANFL players in the St. Kilda line up too - Steven Sziller - played in Eagles 1993 premiership, Robbie Neill from Norwood, Tony Brown and Darryl Wakelin from Port.
Brett James and Aaron Keating played in the Norwood premiership side the following week as well. Clay Sampson is playing for South still and Brett James is for Norwood - He started his career for them in 1990, and has played 337 games overall - 219 for Norwood, 42 for Collingwood and 76 for Adelaide. Add to that 7 night matches in the AFL and 2 State of Origin and that's 346 games. I'm not sure how many State games for the SANFL he has played.

Yeah great work lonie. The two teams are full of triers rather than the most skillful. Although Jarman, McLeod and Jones skill certaintly shows, its blokes like burke, koster, ellen, heatley even that play big roles

And from the 2000's:

Amazingly, the GF DVD's can be found cheaper in stores than Name A Game VHS's. I might have to start the collection. I picked up the 1990 GF for $18 at KMart, and still are that price for all WEG Editions. Will have a look. I have the 2000 on WEG VHS, and the last two GF's I don't have. Mum's a Sydney supporter, so it will be a present for her b'day coming up, the 05' GF, so I guess that can be added :p
2nd Quarter stats will be up late tonight I would think. Spending the day at the Junction watching the mighty Vics today. :)

Who's this Ruccuito hack you speak of? Obviously some soft loser with no leadership skills or anything.
Never heard of this Modra guy either...might've kicked a goal or two but was nothing special obviously.
Seriously, I think we actually would've done better if Modra was playing. Shanahan was an expert at shutting down big full-forwards, and was cut to pieces by Jarman. If Modra was playing Burkie probably would've done a better job on Jarman, and if we had our ruckmen (best combo in the league) playing, it hardly would've got there.
Harvs probably did end up with 35 touches, but if he coud see and think properly it would've been 55.

i think the convo between ellen and blight on the monday after the prelim was something like:
blight: shane, can you lead?
ellen: yeh.
blight: good.
and the rest is history.

The biggest loss for us was Modra, the unpredictability of the Adelaide forward line was what got us in the end, Rehn was important too.

It was the Barry Hall show in the first 10 minutes of the 2nd Quarter, as he kicked 3 goals in as much minutes to help the Saints break away from Adelaide. The Saints took to a 3 goal lead. Rod Keogh and Aussie Jones were the men who lead from the centre of the ground, while Shaun Rehn was dragged after failing to dominate centre bounce hitouts. He joined injured Crows Clay Sampson and Rod Jameson on the bench. The saints dominated possession, having 30 to 12.

Adelaide got a move on and replied with two goals, from Simon Goodwin and Troy Bond. The rucking was a key note in the period of time. With Rehn on the bench, Adelaide managed to have control over Sierakowski. Keating, in only his third career game managed well. Andrew McLeod changed into the midfield onto Nathan Burke, and has held Burke touchless, after having 10 first quarter touches.

IMO we lost that game in the ruck and because rehn beat the crap out of us in that last quarter by dropping in the hole, with everitt there there may have been a different story same too with modra and roo. However there is no point in ifs and maybes.

Brett Cook being dominate once again as a ruckman, against the best in the business Shaun Rehn. A free-kick to Troy Bond which resulted in a goal came, but Loewe quickly replied with his first. Rintoul kicked a bouncing goal from outside 50 to draw it closer once again.

Rehn at this point in time has 18 hitouts, but also has been 'dragged' in the first quarter. Brett Cook has been great in the Centre Bounce ruck so far, but as you said, it was the last quarter we need to look at.

good stuff dyertribe
This match was on the Fox Footy Vault thing today...boy it brings back memories.
How good was McLeod though, it was like he was invisible, tackles were made and he just slipped through. What a star.
Jars in the final quarter was simply stunning.
