PROMISING Collingwood forward Sean Rusling will play this season, but he won't be back in time for Round 1.

Rusling had arthroscopic surgery last week to repair his left shoulder after dislocating it in an intra-club hitout at Telstra Stadium.

"It certainly isn't a season-ending injury, but he won't play next week," football operations manager Neil Balme said.

"They have fixed it, and now it's just a matter of him settling down and doing the work and overcoming it."

Balme said it was too early to forecast when Rusling would return to senior footy.

"We are just trying not to put a time on it because you never know with these sorts of injuries," he said. "It's really too difficult to say."

The 19-year-old's season was cut short last year after he broke his left collarbone against St Kilda in Round 17.

Balme said despite the obvious disappointment, Rusling was remaining positive.

"He is disappointed," Balme said. "It is something that he has to put up with.

"He has got to recover from the surgery first and then we will see how he goes."

Good news, at least better than it could have been.

He could end up a major plus if he can get going.
