THERE are mounting fears a Grocon-State Government stand-off will force the Anzac Day Collingwood-Essendon fixture off the MCG.

Both the AFL and the MCC are anxiously awaiting the outcome of the builder's demand for a substantial reward for finishing work earlier than scheduled.

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said last night: "It's possible from what I read that Anzac Day could be in jeopardy."

MCC chief executive officer Stephen Gough acknowledged the problem last night, saying: "We hope the Government and Grocon can come to an agreement to resolve the issue of Anzac Day in the interests of all concerned, particularly the football public."

Demetriou and Gough are believed to have discussed the matter informally late last week.

Grocon is claiming compensation from the Government in return for converting the ground from an athletics venue for the Commonwealth Games to the traditional football field in time for Anzac Day.
