Bulldogs' kennel to be open to media

The Western Bulldogs are poised to open their kennel to the media like never before.
In a move away from the heavily regulated relationship between clubs and press, the Dogs will hold a media "open day" every week.
All players and coaches will be available for interviews after the Dogs' main training session.
The Dogs will open their changeroom doors for the wide-ranging question and answer session.
The brainchild of assistant coach Matthew Drain, the open kennel theory is based on the media policy of US sports.

Thanks for that. I was just reading it in the paper when you posted the link.
It's interesting that they would open the doors to all the players like that.

Matthew Drain is coming up on SEN talking about it. Sometime before 12.

Fantastic move by the club. Hats off to the Drain and the others behind the idea.
The only negative I can see is the potential for young players not used to dealing with the media, saying things they shouldn't when asked tough questions over decisions/errors.

Sounds like a winner.Im not that concerned about the younger players being asked that many tough questions because the focus will more than likely be on the 25 more regular/senior players.
Excellent move. Wouldn't be surprised to see a few more clubs adopt it.
Bit of bitch for Eade and the players, but I'm sure the hype and fluff pieces in the papers every week will make it worth their while.
A lot of these types of initiatives are credited to Drain, and I have to say I'm becoming a massive fan. Certainly someone who looks at the bigger picture - promoting initiatives that improve the club's position as a whole - rather than just looking after his own job.

Its a big deal King - Mark Price was star player in the NBA and if the Dragons can get him on board it is a real credit to them

I think this will be a huge positive for the club. I have really been impressed this year by the number of articles that the club have managed to get into the daily papers. In years gone by even our stars barely got a mention but now the likes of street and morris this year, and the huge write up on cross late last year shows the marketing team is really kicking butt. This can only help us build a bigger membership and sponsorship base.
I have just returned from 12 months in America for work and the open door policy they have there really does seem to work well. Im sure it sucks when there is a huge scandal (like the Kobe rape case or the Vikings sex boat) but it also seems to work wonders to improve the younger players beyond their youth.

How does it work in the States rmbuc2? Do they have a designated day when the media can just rock up and ask anything they want or is it more structured than that?

More media exposure for the club could equate to more members and sponsors.
Some of my mates who follow the Roos are envious of the Dogs publicity machine which results in more and more write ups in the press.

Yep more exposure the better.
Do you have to be attached to a media outlet to interview players or could anyone go in on a 'freelance' basis and interview a player or two?
If freelancers are allowed in someone from here should organise for some interviews. That'd be coooooooooooooooooooooool.

It's a great idea, we could always do with my exposure on our footy club, which means hopefully more members and sponsors. Won't be long till the other teams adopt the same policy. Well done to the Doggies for trying this new idea.

In the states (NBA this is) there are 4 one hour opportunities a week for accredited media personel to gain access to the teams change rooms. If a player is there, and is approached they "must" give an interview. There is also a one hour period on game day that is open.
In the NFL (and here im going off Craig Hutchinson's comments) the team opens the change rooms up at least twice a week for one hour periods where all players and staff are available.
It is always "accredited media" and the way around it in bad times is that the players just make sure they are not in the change rooms at the open time....they have "other commitments"

Quite a smart, innovative move by the Club. Should help with memberships and of course, even more exposure. Sure there's a few risks with doing something like this but the benefits are far more overwhelming.
Won't be surprised at all to see a few other Clubs doing this soon. It's a fantastic idea to promote the Club out in the spotlight.
Bulldogs seem to create a few things. This, the overlap of the socks so it doesn't hurt the feet as much and the pre-match warm up of course. There anything else?

Brilliant stuff. Will definately get us more exposure. The only negative I see is announcing it so early and allowing other clubs to possibly copy it this year. Great stuff Drain.

Not only is this a clever move in terms of exposure which can have an immediate impact in areas such as sponsorship, membership and marketing, but from a Bulldog /media relationship point of view this is a masterstroke. If, for example, the Roos or Carlton are struggling their way through June and July, take it as a given that the football media will have the knives out with all sorts of negative press and much of this will be largely due to the fact that coaches such as Laidly and Pagan treat the media with disdain. Rightly or wrongly ( and I work in the media and lean to the wrongly strongly ) the media can make or break a coach. We're all expecting big things from our boys next year... if things aren't going exactly as we hope they will ( touch wood!) Rocket WILL be cut some slack due to the open door policy. Let supporters from other clubs refer to Rodney Eade as a "media darling." Who cares. It's a great idea, it will reap enormous benefits and hopefully it will help to ease the suspicion and distrust that some of the players may have towards the members of the print and electronic media. Some of them aren't half bad !

This development and last years efforts are a far cry from the Rohde era, and actually seems to be about the club and team, not the coach, as it was under Wallet.

For those of you that went to training today...did the media take advantage and do a few interviews with the players?
