Just reading an article that says Shaun Higgins is the youngets player in the AFL this season.Does that mean we should take things slowly with him and not rush him in?

They have to make sure he is physically capable of playing senior footy but from all the reports the kid is a real talent AND I am sure that the coaching staff will be doing everything to get him ready to debut in 2006.

Interesting to speculate where he would be in the draft had he nominated a year later.

I aagree but after reading the NAB cup book his isn't a skinny kid like McMahon, Ray and Murphy were.Wallace got a fair bit out of Brown in his frist season by running him on and off the bench so Eade might be able to do somthing similar with Higgins.

Yes, will be looking forward to that...so many kids, so much talent, they will grow together.

The great thing is with our midfield depth Higgins has plenty of time to develope at Werribee. I think he'll play 3-5 games next season, but until he gives Eade no reason to leave him out, he should stay at Werribee until he's ready.

I can see your point of view and I agree there is no point or need to rush him, on the other hand there is no reason to hold him back. If he keeps going like he did yesterday I wouldn't be surprised if he came in for an early game or two to show him what it is all about.

Agree with this - if his form warrants it, then he should play...if it doesn't, he shouldn't. Absolutely no point in holding him back if he is ready.
From watching him last year I would be surprised if he doesn't play early and approach the games total achieved by our top draft picks each of the last two years. He is a talented footballer who provides some different qualities to the side than the rest of the group...

Reading all this, many believe Higgins is ready to play.
So how does compare to Ray? Many here would struggle to put him in a best starting 22.

I think the main difference is that Higgins is a fair few kilos heavier than Ray was when he started. From what I saw Friday he has less flair but more poiuse than Ray did in his first season with the club.Higgins also know how to get the ball a bit better than Ray did.

Ok, but how do they compare now?

There's speculation in a thread on the main board about Judd returning to Melbourne. I was inclined to post something along the lines
"If he came to Footscray, he might have to ease himself into the midfield from a position as a running half back. He has to get past West, Cooney, Cross with Griffen, Ray and Higgins still to be slotted in."
Of course it's a ludicrous suggestion but to be able to put it up does emphasise how remarkably talented the midfield is going to be over the next few years.

From my perspective, Ray is still ahead of him in terms of getting games. He's bulked up a bit this year which will help him find the footy a bit more, he's got terrific skills on both his right and right, he's rather smart with the Footy and he handles pressure very well from what was shown last year.
However. NAB Cup wise - Higgins may be selected before Ray due to being fitter and thus, showing better form. Ray has only just recently come off the rehab group from what was said to be 'groin related', so they may be tempted to allow him another week off. Or - they might want to get as much run into his legs as quick as possible.
Whatever the case I think you'll find by the time Round 1 rolls around, Ray will be ahead of Higgins. Though, in saying that, Higgins has a fair bit of ability and in the long run could turn out a more complete player. Only time will tell, but this IS only Higgins' first year. Should be everybodys expectation that Ray improve further on last eyar, starting to establish himself into the best 18.
Fair Call TBB,
Ray has had a taste and has a base to build from, personally any senior games Higgins plays this year I'd see as a bonus because he have enough midfield talent to ease guys into the role slowly.

Looking ahead a bit, when is a permanent member of the team and midfield, where do you see him playing when rotated - forward?

Yes HFF or in the midfield would suit him best. Not super quick but could be a great replacement for Westy in the next few seasons.
