Damon White has an 'open house' at his home in Western Australia this afternoon, with all his family and friends flowing in to see him and help celebrate the beginning of his AFL career.
A bright, confident and excited Damon White spoke on radio station FiveAA this afternoon, saying he was “stoked” to be picked up by Port Adelaide and couldn’t wait to get over here.
“Everyone’s told me today you’re so lucky to be going to a club like that ... it’s pretty exciting at the moment,” Damon said.
It had been a nerve racking morning for Damon as he had to wait until the fourth round of the National Draft (pick 62) to be selected after having been touted as a possible top 20 selection.
“Eight or nine clubs were pretty interested in me but then today it got to round four of picks and I thought ‘oh I dunno how interested they really are’,” Damon said, “so I went out the back and played a bit of backyard cricket and then mum came out five minutes later and said you’re off to Port Adelaide!”
Despite being from Perth, the black, white and teal colours are out in force at the moment and have been since early this morning.
Damon explains: “My sister’s a mad Port Adelaide supporter so they’ve had the scarf and beanie out this morning, she’s right into it! When they came into the competition she took a liking to some of the players over there and its gone on from there!
And now her brother is one of them!
Damon was a potential top ten pick in the 2000 National Draft but was unable to nominate as he was a month too young. One year later, he is still rated highly but had a broken foot and missed 12 weeks of the 2001 season due to that.
White has played most of his career at centre half-forward and also been used at centre half-back in the eight games he played in the Westar Rules (WAFL) last season, which he said he also enjoyed.
Damon’s been told by the club to enjoy the next few days with family and friends and then the club will contact him to organise him coming over to Adelaide soon after.
Good luck Damon and we look forward to having you over here as part of our Port Adelaide family!
