View Full Version : Training Report 15/2

Not long back from this afternoons training session
Todays session was listed as a skills session and started a little later than it's advertised time of 2pm.

I arrived a bit early and noticed a number of players having a kick to kick before they were summoned in.

Only two players in the rehab group, Monty and Williams and they really didn't stay out there that long. Monty doing a number of different boxing excercises and Williams again spending his time mainly on the arm winch machine.
It was good to see the normal rehab regulars like Morgan, Baird, Tiller and Ray training at full tilt. There was two other players missing from the sesssion, Chris Grant and Peter Street. I didn't ask at the time why they were not out there.

This was a very good session from the ones I have seen recently with a lot of talk and a fair bit of intensity. With the NAB cup not far off I can imagine that competition for spots is pretty hot at the moment

There was a lot of circuit work and a couple of hard tackling drills that was pleasing to see. Wells, supporting a new hair cut, seemed to throw an elbow when McCormack tackled him and D-Mac simply dumped him to the ground and got on with business. There was also a one-on-one session between Morris and Micheal West with both players trying to test each other.

Eade and a couple of the assistant coaches spent a fair bit of time on a kick-in drill that had players moving forward at every chance. McMahon who was probably the pick of the players I saw at training today seemed to be the designated player for the kick-in duties.
This part of the session was to enforce the need to players to move the ball forward quickly at every chance. Players that kicked sideways when better options were available up the ground were quickly reminded by the coaches. The theme was positive and the players responded well. Hargrave was also very good during this part of the session.

One of the final parts of the session was the one-on-one contests where the players are paired up and go through a series of offensive and defensive contests against each other.

Some of the pairings were:

Birss vs Guido - Guido pretty much beat Birss in each of the contests. Eade however, was particularly pleased with this pairing and encouraged them both.

Robbins vs Eagleton - Was fairly evenly matched although I would have to give the nod to Eagle.

Addison vs Ray - I thought Ray would win this contest easily however while he did win, Addison performed very well. Addison seems to be improving every session that I see him.

Faulkner vs McMahon - As good as Faulkner tried McMahon simply was running rings around him and beat him easily in the aerial contests.
Very impressive training session by McMahon.

Gilbee vs Smith - This was a very spirited pairing that had all the other players very interested. Everyone was shouting for Smithy to go harder and all cheered when he tried to take a big mark over Gilbee.
Honours went to Smithy but it was a close call.

BMurphy vs SWest - BMurphy went well when the ball was in the air but I was very impressed with West's defensive efforts.

Cross vs Johnson - This was a great battle and Cross seems to have taken his game to another level which is very pleasing. Both guys gave their all and it was a ferocious contest.

Boyd vs Hahn - Was a bit of a non contest. Perhaps due to the way the ball was delivered the contest was lacking.

Hargrave vs RMurphy - Clearly this the most evenly matched pairing and it was an exciting contest. For players that are often regarded as laconic the spirit displayed by these two was very encouraging. Hargrave was probaly marginally ahead at the end of it but it was a quality contest.

McCormack vs Tiller - Great to see Tiller in action and while he performed well D-Mac got the better of it. Tiller seems taller and is a lot more mobile than I recall from last year. D-Mac was very competitive throughout the session and his skill level was excellent.

Griffen vs Higgins - This was an intriguing contest that had our number one selections from the last two years pitted against each other. As you would expect Griffen would have won both contests however, Higgins is very competitive and certainly made Griffen work hard. Higgins will play some senior football for us in 2006.

Morris vs Cooney - Cooney certainly got the better of it in the two contests but Morris is an improved player from last year and it's very unlikely that he will suffer and 2nd year blues.

I will add a few more comments a bit later.

If anyone has some questions I will try and answer them for you.

this should complete the report.

The final group was mainly a number of the taller players.

Minson vs Skipper - Another evenly matched contest but probably lacked a bit of a spark that you expect when ever Minson is involved. I would probably rate it a dead heat.

McGuinness vs Power - Both players put up a very spirited showing and McGuinness seems to be a lot more confident than last season. Power acquitted himself very well in a very evenly matched contest.

Morgan vs MWest - Morgan back in the main group out pointed West although young West is moving a lot better than I thought. Morgan showed that his time on the sideline really hasn't impacted his fitness and he really worked hard all session.

Wight vs Harris - Harris was a clear winner in these contests although Wight did his best and really some excellent spoiling skills.

Walsh vs Davidson - While Walsh won the majority of the contests Davidson moved well and was strong in the contests. Both players fought it out well.

Great report OS. (Do you take notes or do you have an amazing memory?)

Good to hear Morgan is training with the main group again and looking okay.

Normally I take some notes but I have been experimenting with a simple revised format. The memory is not too bad though.

Yes Morgan moved very well all things considered and it was pleasing to see so many of the rehab regs back with the main group. I thought Morgan might be a fair way behind the others but really he is closer than I gave him credit for.

Yes he was out there and he moved very well and has a good spring. He was pitted against Wells and was a fair way ahead of him in the contests.
Biard does not look physically strong enough for a KP role but could pinch hit there at times.

I'm an avid reader of the reports here regarding the pre season training to date.
I sure appreciate them as an eager supporter who live outside of Victoria.

I'm really impressed from the write ups to date on the performance of those who have not been to date main fixtures in the Bulldog lineup.
Guys like Skipper, K-Mac, Walsh, Faulkner and Power have from reports this pre season put in some encouraging performances.
Hopefully like Gilbee and McMahon last year a couple of these can step up their play and add to our overall depth and competition for first team positions.I'm especially encouraged to hear of Walsh and K-Mac's solid pre-season to date, and hope it continues into the NAB.

I recall K-Mac's first game against the Bombers and I really thought he was going to shine for us in years to come- seemed to have great athleticism and marking and kicking skills looked good. For the past two years I thought he was losing his way and feared he would not be at the club for too much longer. Hence I am so glad to hear that he is again staking a claim for senior selection via his efforts to date.

Walsh, I need not elaborate on, is the sole remaining whipping boy at our club (since Bandy, Rawlings, Bowden have departed) for many posters here, and I really hope he has an injury free season so that he may have a decent chance to develop his game.

If these two alone were to take similar strides this year to that of Gilbee and McMahon's leaps last year, then this would be a great step in improving the positional depth of our roster.

A huge thank you for your efforts OS. For the first season in years I haven't been able to attend preseason training at all and I am missing it so badly. These very insightful and professional reports are gems and keep the withdrawal symptoms at bay.

It doesn't take much of my time to do this so if I make it to training but I'm happy to write them up for others that can't make it.
I'm sure there will be half a dozen BF reporters there for the intra-club game on Friday so I look forward to comparing my notes against everyone else.

Bulldog supporters should be excited. It's easy to whine about losing Darcy and Williams and dwell on that fact but there is a lot to like about this group and we will give a number of players a great opportunity to establish themselves as senior players.
The big test is of course when we play the Dees.

Nice report o.s.

interesting because you never hear how the players go 1 on 1 against each other very often. Throughout the year you remember so and so played a good game against lloyd etc, but by comparing them against each other you get a good understanding of where they are at. Especially when the new guys are out performing some of the lads that have been around for some time.

Thanks for the report, however your notes opened two questions for me:

a. You seem confident that Higgins will play senior footy, can he make an impact or will he nab a lucky one or two senior games for experience?

b. Did it look like McMahon will stay in the backline or has he spent time with the midfielders?

Cheers

Excellent questions.

I am confident that Higgins will play a few games for the Dogs this season and not just for the experience. I think he is a genuine chance of being selected on his merits. He might be used as part on an extended bench during the NAB cup but he has the skills and ability to play other senior games throughout the season.

McMahon is an interesting one. I was fairly confident that he would spend more time in the mdifield this season however after seeing him in action earlier this week I'd say that he will probably just move from the BP to the HBF.
I think he is very much seen as a prime mover in the backline and someone that they want running the ball up the field as often as he can.

He will be used in the midfield a fair bit but primarily used as a defender.

My guess is that McMahon will play as a wingman all year with his long kicking into the forward line.

Not sure about Higgins, might just get a few games to set him up for the years ahead.
