The Brisbane Lions conducted their final major pre-season fitness trial on Wednesday - the arduous 'beep test' - and midfielder Troy Selwood outgunned many of his more fancied rivals with a level of 15.4 in warm and humid conditions.

A total of 22 players on the Lions list took part in the endurance test which requires players to shuttle between markers set 20 metres apart at ever decreasing time intervals marked by a 'beep'.

Levels of around 14 to 15 are regarded as high standard and the test generally lasts around 10 minutes.

Lions test big men for pre-season

THE Lions expect to be at full strength for the start of the AFL season, but positions are up for grabs for the opening round of the pre-season NAB Cup, particularly for their new crop of big men.

Friday's intra-club scratch match will serve as an audition for the February 24 clash with Essendon at Carrara, with five premiership players unavailable and ruckman Jamie Charman, tall utility Daniel Bradshaw and midfielder Richard Hadley facing fitness tests.

Brad Scott and Nigel Lappin (ankle) and Jonathan Brown (knee) are recovering from surgery and are unlikely to play until the second week of the tournament.

Matthews unfazed by injury list

The Brisbane Lions will turn out for their first genuine competitive test of the year in an intra-club game at their summer training venue, Coorparoo, on Friday evening, and coach Leigh Matthews appears to be unfazed about a growing injury list that is likely to affect player availability.

"We have had an extra month of the summer, but it doesn't seem to mean we have more players ready to play," he said on Wednesday.

"We never seem to have 36 so we always seem to play 14 or 15-a-side but we might get to 16."

Lappin's role is left of centre

NIGEL Lappin is the Lions' mystery man, the odd man out in the midfield "fab four" that became household names as Brisbane won three successive flags.

There's inspirational captain Michael Voss -- fierce on the field, cheeky off it.

Simon Black is the laid-back lad who racked up award after award.

And there's Jason Akermanis -- the human headline with so much to say everyone feels they know him.

No offence mate, 'cause you seem like decent sort of bloke, but all these media stories are listed on our portal. But I suppose maybe not everyone's using their team portals yet.
