View Full Version : Ben Robbins - the next John Blakey

Red Rover

It was heartening to see a player touted as a future Red Rover given a second chance at a club like the Kangaroos.

For a club like the Brisbane Lions with a fine history of producing Red Rovers of the caliber of Brad Hardie, Simon Atkins, Justin Leppitsch and Michael Voss, to cut a player of Robbins's potential was particularly disappointing.

You win a flag and suddenly you're too good to produce Red Rovers?? I hope you realise Ben Robbins is going to kick on better than John Blakey.

Even if Robbins can't get a run with the Roos, we're going to rig the next Red Rover Medal to make sure Robbins wins it anyway, just to teach you Lions a lesson.

The loss of sponsorship revenue as a result will cripple your club and this sudden complacency will surely result in the ultimate undoing of your sorry club. You'll then have to merge with the Brisbane Bullets and get Trent Knobel back to help Big Beau shoot some hoops. Darryl White won't mind a few slam-dunks and Luke Power will get his wish of a role away from the forwards, but the Gov' Johnny Brown will move back home and play for the Cats.

Meanwhile, Ben Robbins will take the captaincy from Wayne Carey, eventually become the Kangaroos games record holder and to cap it off he will be etched in the history books forever with his induction into the Red Rover Hall of Fame.

Sorry you let Benny go? Too late. Back to back?? You guys will flop lower than whale-poo.

No Ripper, it doesn't flop, it just sits very low in the ocean. The loss of Ben Robbins will cause the Lions to flop and eventually sit very low in relative terms with the rest of the AFL clubs.

Look, it is obvious the Brisbane Lions AFC and it's supporters have left their fine Red Rover tradition behind and that's a concern for the future viability of the club. Don't let the taste of a Premiership seduce you, the club needs to consolidate on this success by reinforcing the fine traditions that got it there. I've seen it time and time again; a club wins a flag and gets satisfied and loses its focus and it isn't very long before it all catches up with you. Look at Richmond in the '80s, they won a flag, then fell in a heap.

It's time to face the facts before all is lost.

Red Rover has warned you....................

If someone manages to convince Aka to ditch the peroxide (and we can only hope someone can :o), I'm sure the Brownlow Medallist will make an adequate replacement for Benny R. in the red rover stakes, Red Rover.

*No need for panic yet*

Yes...........

That made basically no sense- but as a roo supporter I better give Robbins a go. As for the Lions flopping- I dont think so!

Go Roos 2002;)
