From The Age:

Rioli foreshadows his exit

February 26, 2006

ESSENDON player Dean Rioli has forecast an end to his AFL career next year.
Rioli, whose 96-game career has been often hampered by injury, and whose current pre-season has been set back with knee problems, has said he will retire at the end of next season.
"Two more years will be enough," the 27-year-old Tiwi Islander, who plans to take his personal training business overseas, told the Northern Territory News.
"My business is off and running in Melbourne and we've just sold off in Ireland. So hopefully I'll be able to live in Europe and work on my business over there."
Rioli was one of several senior Bombers to miss their Friday night loss to the Brisbane Lions, but hoped to squeeze in a couple of practice games in upcoming weeks and be ready for round one.
"I still struggle through training a bit with the knee, but at least I get to train with the group again and can work on my skills," he said.
"Everything seems to have come good in the last two weeks, which is a good sign."

Im sorry but Rioli owns a personal training business? Even as an Essendon supporter I see the irony in that.

Not sure what's more ironic, that he owns it, or that it's doing well.

I don't think he meant it to be.
He was pointing out the irony.
And yes, it is ironic.
Because, unfortunately, for him
his knee is shoddy.
And even more unfortunately,
he loves his turtle.

The greater irony is that HE (Rio) doesn't seem to think it's a bit off centre.
I mean, at least Renee Kink was a hairdresser - not a fitness expert ;)

PS I can't see Rio playing on in 2007 - he'll be nursed through this season
get his 100 games - the clubs qualifies for father/son - and that will be that, imo.

I tend to agree with you, you cant have players on a list that only play cameo peformances in 3 games of the season. As good as rioli can be and dont get me wrong when on song we usually win, has he ever been fair dinkum about being the best aussie rules footballer he can ever be.

NO!!! after every pre-season he turns up overweight, if he wasnt so fat he wouldnt be placing so much pressure on his knees.

skill is one thing dedication is another.

He didn't turn up over his set weight this year.

Longy- what is rioli's set weight? I would argue that he faces a different set of rules to every other player at the club and perhaps the league. If A different player came to pre-season with his skin folds there would be serious repercussions. Rioli is overweight for a league footballer and the game has passed him by. I dont believe we can afford to play a player who can play very limited game time. Simple as that. You can have all the skill in the world but if you are huffing after being involved in a few contests you are going to be found out. IMO campo has taken Rioli's spot though I concede there is no chance of Sheedy playing Dean in the seconds. Derek Kickett must seeth when he sees the preferential treatment deano recieves.

His skinfolds are fine. And in previous years he has had to pay for not being in the shape required.
Keep in mind that every player on the list has different weight goals etc.

Rioli is overweight for a league footballer and the game has passed him by.

He has been in the past, but he isn't now. The biggest problem he faces is that with his natural body shape, he can't maintain weight properly without full training.

Neither do I. But I'm not convinced that his weight is the issue, nor is it his endevour. It's his knees. Now you could argue that his knees are shot because of his weight and perhaps you'd be right, maybe it is a catch 22.

But right now, as it stands, weight is not Dean Rioli's problem. Getting over his knee injury and getting match fit is.

Rioli's problem last season was that he couldn't get match conditioning and hence couldn't run out a whole game. No player can do that if they aren't conditioned. Rioli doesn't gets an injury, he can't train, he puts on weight, he loses conditioning. It's a vicious cycle and one I wouldn't put down to lazyness or a lack of commitment.

I know Dean takes his position as an AFL footballer seriously and is committed , he wants to be an Essendon Premiership player and nothing motivates him more than that.

If he gets his knee right, he can train properly and the weight doesn't become an issue and we see the best of Dean Rioli and we're a better side for it.

The knee or any other injury for that matter sets in and we've been robbed of a great talent.

Agree with that. His father was never the thinnest person to walk the earth. If true, would be a shame given his sublime ability.Must be all that turtle he eats  .But all the same,I don't think we ever saw the best of him due to his ailments, but if were an Essendon supporter,at this stage,I'd be more concerned about getting Solomon through a full season.I don't think they're the same team without him,and like Rioli,a player that has almost succumbed to continual knee problems.
