3: Burton will win the mark of the year.
4: Pre season ballwork under match conditions has us teaming/teeming through the corridor:cool:

5. Goodwin. Showed Port what they should have been doing with the ball - kicking long and to a man. #1 comfortably
4. Burton Could have gone a few ways here, but Burton couldn't have done much more than he did today. Kicked 4 and covered a heap of ground.
3. Knights Isn't he a beauty? That would have been a Rising star Nomination game if that had been a minor round game. Simply a ball magnet.
2. Hentschel 6 goals and one hell of a smart forward. IMO a very clever player and must be played close to goal to get the true value out of him.
1. Perrie The ugly duckling is becoming a beautiful swan!! Works his arse off and is an important part of our forward set-up.
Best Team Man
3. Ben Rutten. Simply for embarrassing Tredrea again. :)
2. Perrie See above.
1. Edwards Just his usual honest contribution with a dash of skill.
Rookie
Knights. Outstanding effort. Is the young on-baller that Port are screaming for - but don't have.

5. Simon Goodwin - He played like a leader today. He just stepped up a notch in a purple patch that put the game beyond doubt.
4. Brett Burton - For 2 weeks in a row he played as good as you would want him to play. His hands are as clean as they've ever been. He is marking as well as he has ever marked.
3. Chris Knight - Covered a lot of ground, got a lot of footy and used it well. He took his exceptional SANFL form into AFL without missing a beat.
2. Trent Hentschel - He just looked all class at FF today. Marked well, had he kicked a bit straighter he could have had more than 6 but to be fair the was a bit of a swirly breeze around that made the goal kicking a bit tricky. Again, for 2 weeks in a row he was in good goal kicking form.
1. Ian Perrie - Had a great little burst where he marked everything that came his way. Kicked 4 goals and marked very well. You can't ask for more. He has become so vital for us. Who would have thought that a couple of years ago we would be talking about Perrie in the manner we do these days :thumbsu:
Best Team Man
3. Ben "Tredders, who is your daddy?" Rutten - Played Tredrea very well and was a general down there. To beat Port you need to keep Tredrea out of the game. Ben does that on regular basis
2. Ian Perrie - See above. Absolutely vital to our structure and when he plays well we generally win. He was great today.
1. Tyson Edwards - That couragous act alone is woth a vote
Rookie
3. Chris Knights - See above
2. Jason Porplyzia - Well, so much for wasting a PS pick on him . Puts his head over the ball, find the tough footy, has footy smarts and awareness and was influential in the midfield. Can't ask for more
1. Nathan Van Berlo - Loved his courage and 2nd and 3rd efforts. Got a bit of the footy and generally used it well. Came in with some timely, couragous spoils to save a couple of goals.

Play two or three loose men in defence, and ring the ball ups with quite a few players - and yet we get accused of flooding! Still try to play that chip it around contested possession game.

Uncontested perhaps Nikki?? :)
Interestingly enough the stats were almost identical - in fact Port might have even had a couple more than us.
But the stats also show that Port had a heap more of uncontested possessions and marks, and a lot less contested possessions - a sure sign of playing a chip it around ring a ring a rosey possession game.

Salopek 30 possesions of which 24 were uncontested
Having said that, I thought Salopek and Ebert were 2 shining lights for Port today.

I wonder how many of Knights' possessions were contested/uncontested? One thing that was really evident about yesterdays game is that Chocco and Port should have put abit more effort into luring Scotty Thomson to Alberton. They are crying out for excatly that type of player. Too many of their midfielders get the uncontested/spillage ball.

I'm a little puzzled as why there is so little said of Marics effort on sunday. granted he still has a way to go on his ruckwork but i was impressed by his 2nd & 3td efforts plus he's not afraid to get down & dirty.
Has that touch of mongrel in him as well. :thumbsu:

Quite a few of us have said we liked what we saw noddy, for the very reasons that you said.
But he is a long way off being AFL ready yet, and by that I mean to have a major impact on a game.
Actually he's coming along quicker than most young ruckmen do and could well be a regular next year after an odd game or two this year.
He's okay. :thumbsu:

Best on Ground
5. Goodwin - Just another day for one of the best midfielders in the AFL. Long kicking was just as good as ever.
4. Burton - He was everywhere, and the best things was that he was most dominant in the forward line. Took marks like no tomorrow and finished with a few.
3. Knights - Didn't expect anything less. Racked the ball up and generally used it well. Has tighten up those handballs.
2. Hentschel - Dominated his opponents with his athleticism and sticky hands. Kicked a bag and hopefully brings this form into the real stuff.
1. Perrie - The ball just glided into those mits. Was a good finisher and showed us why we're lucky he didn't leave last year.
Best Team Man
3. Rutten - For beating Tredrea. Like always.
2. Perrie - see above
1. Van Berlo - tackling and 2nd/3rd efforts were just fanatstic. In fact, better than fantastic. I hope Jericho takes a look at how it should be done.
Rookie of the Year
Knights - Obvious. See above.
Most surprising
Porplyzia - Showed a great amount of skill, class and willingness to put his head over the ball. Seems to have a lot of time and his disposal was very good.
Most disappointing
Bode - Yes he tried hard, but his disposal was shocking. I cringed when he missed those two sitters in front of goal.
Jericho had a terrible first half but made up for it with some nice play in the second.

Having finally seen the game on afl.com.au.. (what a blessing for those of us overseas!)
Best on Ground
5. Goody goody num nums - seemed to find space at will and delivered it time again deep into the forward line. Seemed to only be in 3rd gear as well...
4. Birdman - if this guy had a football brain he would win a brownlowe. He can run all day and take a grab anywhere on the ground. Constantly lost his opponent and from a HF flank where its hard to perform at times kicked a bag and had a ton of it.
3. Trent Potent - Constantly won the ball in a 50/50 (mark or on the ground) to kick a nice bag. Some might argue the ball was down there so much someone had to but... he was rarely beaten 1 on 1 and lead to boot.
2. Sir Chris - delivery by foot superb and just kept finding the footy in close and receiving. Should be a really solid midfielder for years to come
1. Perrie - Lead and marked well all day. Kicked 4 and gave every midfielder confidence to kick it long to the true CHF position. I love that confidence as it gives the whole side a focus.
Best Team Man
3. Tyson Edwards - running back with the flight in a practise game and risking major pain set a fine example to all the youngsters playing.
2. Perrie - lead and lead all day and got rewarded for it. Constantly working hard to provide a target to give the team confidence to kick long and direct.
1. Rutten - Not only beat his direct opponent in nearly every 1 on 1 contest they had but marshalled the defence with many of its regulars missing.
Rookie of the Year
Sir Chris - honourable mention to Porplyzia
Most surprising
Porplyzia - not really seen or heard much of him before and his ability to win the ball in close and have time to dispose was impressive. Not afraid to get in hard but then again hardly anyone seems to at the Crows atm and thats full credit to Craigy's leadership and the boys followign it.
Most disappointing
Bode - mainly because we all SO want him to succeed but.. he lets himself down with his disposal. I for one hope he has a full season this year as the guy just busts a nut at times. Unfortuantely not sure there will be room in the best 22 for him if he doesnt kick better.

Being Wednesday, votes wouldnt normally count - but anyway - I'll go -
5. Goodwin - can this guy get any better?
4. Burton - could be in for a big year with a big hangr or two
3. Knights - if he can take this form into the main season - whoaa!!
2. Hentschell - might prove difficult for opposition sides to match up on
1. Perrie - seems to have developed a bigger presence this year!
TM
3. Rutten - Trod on Tredders again! - although Tredders had some ok moments
2. Edwards - the courage and skill make this guy so valuable
1. Reilly - pleased how he played - seems very team oriented thought he seemed harder than usual and did a lot of good stuff until injured.
R
1.Knights - reckon this could become a habit this year
We had heaps of good players - which you'd expect with a result like that - but special HM's to Van Berlo and Porplyzia - and I thought big Rhett looks in good nick thus far!
Not much comment about Johnc&ck - how did people rate his game?

Macca, we can make the rookie criteria however we want - should leave it to the majority to decide. We could increase the voting to a 2-1, given we now appear to have more players that actually meet the criteria.
How about we start a thread to discuss who's eligible and who's not?
The problem with hard & fast rules was shown up last year with Rutten and Bock. Even though both players were the same age, had been at the club the same length of time and were at essentially the same stage of development, the former was eligible and the latter was not.
