Big call Old Timer. 15-20 goals of last years side who won 2 games at a percentage of 56%. I believe your underestimating the talents of Scicko and Tsingaris, absolute class acts. Not sure how many other 19 players are still playing but these boys IMO could play at a higher level. Banyule could easily be 7-3 instead of 3-7, but that is the nature of the competition. Is "C" grade that much better? I do admit i have never seen a "C" grade game, it is intriguing! I have totally been riveted by D1 this year, some great footy to watch. The Last two weeks with Rupo we have seen 67 goals kicked, 34 against 33 for. I'd love to hear Parton's opinion, one of the OC boys might sound him out. Banyules No. 5 was a unit, huge build.
I think it is time to come clean DG Man, you have run this thread admirably. I think you have a preference for the OG, but you have handled yourself very discreetly. Really we get nothing from OG so at least put your heart where your mouth is. That goes with Conduct Unbecoming and Bluesboy. This thread is running brilliantly but the rule should be to share your allegiance. Kibe and Toohas are great additions (straight up front), and the Old Timer if he's from Banyule, fantastic!

Oh Midas as well, you had some strong opinions about Rupo early, they have mellowed a little bit(could still yet be proven). However your contributions have been fantastic. Where is your allegiance?
For legal and national security reasons, DG must remain a little cagey in relation to his true allegiance. I am not a player and have no official capacity at any club in D1. A great love of Amatuer football i share with you all. Yes, i do support a certain team, and i am sure by years end this will be only to obvious to you all. For now, *looks back over both shoulders to ensure nobody is watching* i best leave, as i have already said a little too much!

I am very patriotic DG man, therefore this will go no further (National Security). Is there a chance by adhering to this i might get a berth at the dinner dance!!!
KB, this is a relief. I was getting a little concerned about your demands. What if others followed and i was blackballed for secrecy and deceit!
My two cents worth,
I think the top end of D1 is not far off the top end last year. I think 2006 model OC, would account for 2005 Prahran. BT are a hugely improved side, and if playing say Ormond of 05 next week, would certainly be a real show. The powerful Reds side probably makes me lean towrds 05 as slightly the stronger year at the top.
I agree with a few others that YV are the best measure for the relative D1 strength of the last two seasons. They had some solid results against the better teams early on last year and are arguably stronger this year in the seniors. Yet they were shown to be a fair way off the pack against the OC last week.
All in all the standard of D1 is pretty decent. And it is so even with clubs like Leos and Bunyule improving, and now with Prahran pulling off a great win! Unlike the AFL (Blues and Bombers) there are NO easy games in D1 for any club over the next 8 weeks.
Saddle up (that's for you Pharlap) and enjoy!
Not sure where I got this idea from, but I figured that DG Man, might be the Qwill...the love for Old Geelong certainly seems pretty accurate.

Yes his love for OG is apparent (as is mine), but DG has too many good things to say about BT. I think even the casual observer can tell The Qwill does not rate them and seldom mentions them in his column....

Kingbrown, Skicko played most games in seniors last year, however, club wanted to qualify him for the Under 19's finals. Tsingaris has struggled the last couple of years to play senior footy, only played 3 - 4 games last year. This year he has lost a lot of weight and obviously playing great footy. C Grade last year was exceptional. A lot quicker than D1 and players run a lot more. Skills are a lot better also. This years side definitely wouldn't get within 15 - 20 goals. Of the 9 who have gone, 6 were in the top 8 in the b and f. Banyule's best player at the moment has only played about 3 - 4 games due to injury. D Gayfer (he finished 2nd in the b and f last year).
King brown, as you know it is great to have plenty of youth which Banyule and Rupo have obviously got, however, if there is not experience to mix in with the youth then it is an up hill battle. All players who left were over 23 and at the moment in the 1's only 1 player has played more than 100 games.
DG is unaware of the Qwill. I just jumped on the OGS website to try and find a Qwill column, but came up empty. Who is this Qwill everybody but DG seems to know about??
The Qwill is the scribe for D1 in the footy record and the chairman of the Rupertswood and Old Geelong fan clubs...

Oh my! But he has more hair than me, one extra chin than i have, and looks a little older and larger than the DG-Man! I'm not saying i haven't had a little blowout over the years (yes i enjoy a beer and a pie) but this is a little crazy! I never knew he was called Qwill. He certainly has not given BT much respect this year. Will be interesting to see if he talks them up a little this week! As he has mentioned this forum before, so he obviously reads it, apologies for the double chin gag!:)

It seems to me that Oldtimer has an in depth knowledge of Banyule - yet he was at Old Westbourne on Saturday where Kew took on the Warriors...hmmm, maybe an ex-Banyule player now playing at Kew in D3. Not hard to work out his identity. Nice to hear from you (initials ommitted).
Bluesboy..well, he posts comments on the D1, the U19(1) and RDFL threads..suspect a Rupertswood connection there as only Rupo are connected in all 3 (sides in D1 and U19(1) plus geographically connected to the RDFL). Interesting though, as he really gets stuck into the U19 Rupo boys...all part of the ploy I guess..
And Kingbrown, I think we do get an OG perspective from time to time....

Wish I was still playing. Divide my time now between watching both clubs. A few guys left Banyule to go to Kew. So spend time watching them at Home and Banyule at Home, however, last week had the choice of Sunbury or Hoppers. Live closer to Hoppers so went and watched Kew.

C.U is always trying to work out the identities of scribes. Perhaps i can throw a little suggestion your way. I believe you are an ammo footy nut who has strong allegiances to Marcellin. Perhaps once a leader down there.
No massive allegiance, just know a number of former OM players and enjoy sneaking around and watching a few D1 games most weeks - not necessarily all OM's games either, difficult to travel that far given I'm usually inner city.
Just enjoy the grass roots footy lads, no crime in that I'm sure. As for Rupo, well the jury's out but they win this week and they're in the last four, somewhere I never expected them to be!
Leave it to you boys to be passionate about where you come from, but love to see it!
Big games this week though:
Two Blues v OC: Top v Bottom, shapes as a 60/40 for the OC in my opinion, probably highlighting the relative evenness of the comp. OC building its list in the second half, Two Blues need this to keep faint dreams of D1 in 2007 - Damn it I'm going the Two Blues but a week too late for the upset perhaps. Fortune favours the brave I guess.
Yarra v Rupo: Well the cocksure mob from Domeney once again failed away from home, although from the team list there were some notable absentees. Rupo, well I still can't see it and at home the YV boys might keep the competition for finals alive.
Temp v Leos: Two toughish teams, with the BT boys on a roll under some expert tutleage. Leos form has been solid, 2.5 from four and would see this as a great opportunity to make up some ground. However, the momentum is all with the Cobras and Ajani is in their favour - go for BT by a little bit.
Banyule v OGs: The Bears at home have proven toughish opposition and a definite danger game for OG's whose confidence may have been knocked about by last week's handsome defeat. The Bears may find themselves in the proverbial s h i t fight for D1 with a loss this week, have a good record at home and OG's may just be stuttering. OG's but very narrowly.
OM's v Therry: Well haven't Therry fallen away, and loss of Crotty and Goodwin is going to hurt them in the midfield. Against OM's who have created a bit of a fortress at home, I can;t see them getting close. If ever it was going to respond, you would think Therry would have done so last week facing successive losses at home, so OM's by a little bit ie 5 goals.

Sorry to disappoint you Amused. No leader, not affiliated with Marcellin and not an ammo footy nut...spend more time watching Diamond Valley/Eastern FL than Ammos.
Anyway, this thread went on for months without my input and will go on for months without it. As such, I think any DI affiliation I may/may not have or my identity remains mostly irrelevant...I think most people just want good intelligent conversation and some helpful insight into other teams within the division (not pretending for a minute that I provide either by the way..).

Rupo NO chance against Yarra in the wet. As noted a month ago - I likened Rupo's season to a sexually inexperienced boy - say, like Sandra. All excited about being promoted to D grade, playing above themselves, but alas, shooting their load way too early. You don;t win premierships in April / May. Have done very little since the big win v OC, and the big Valley bodies will continue their slide this week.

OC to beat Prahran - 3 goals
OG over Banyule - 10 goals
Therry over om and to finish their season - 5 goals
BT to beat leos in a tight one at ajani - 10 points
Fantastic thread gents!
As for teams improving or not,
any team with players such as parton, collins, white are always going to be around the mark.
BT has improved there is no doubt, a few new faces but it is their cohesion, belief and care thats getting them over the line.
Banyule will get better, therry will get worse and will not make the finals!
OMs just keep teasing with form!!!!
Prahran will enjoy D2 next year - no depth whatsoever - When the chequebook disappears so do their players!
Old Geelong will be in C grade next year, obvious improvers, rupo not too sure about maybe another year or two in D1 but will move up in years follwing - good youth.
YV good hard team, honest but lose the ones they should win. They will be a good D grade team and that is it!
D1 footy is very strong and has a cracking thread going. Keep it up.
The Qwill is overdue for a mention on the ants this week, surely!:D
Bullant, nice work!
Interested that you throw OGS up as a C-Grade certainty next year. Not to say i'm not liking this prediction, but i am suprised by it.
BT touched them up, OC have the wood on them in 04 and now in 06. BT have improved planty, OC's list this year is starting to peak, and yet OGS are certain to go up?? Is it so may ask...How so?

Fair enough Old Timer as i have said i have never seen a "C" Grade game. Interesting Uni Blacks and Beaumaris are very much middle of the road in "B" grade with St Bedes Mentone unbeaten in "C" grade coming down from "B". This to me suggests even "B" Grade is a bigger step. I still reckon Banyule would be a good side to follow. I suppose are similar to Rupo. Yes i agree, you definitely need old heads to mix with the young, however it is enjoyable watching the younger guys and i would rather have them at the club than a bloke who goes from Club to Club.
Tips (for what there worth)
Rupo 36 pts, (due for a good one)
OC 28 pts
OG 32 pts
OM 18 pts
BT 44 pts.

5 Jul 2006, 20:44
Recent tipping has seen me let down and dissapoointed by a few (I guess no more dissapointed that there own fans)
Lots of talk of new players and a few transfers and registrations at the end of the june may make the remainder of the season interesting.
My tips this week:
YV / Rupo
He who wins plays finals: tipping YV much bigger & stronger than rupo, if they lose this they should be ashamed.
BT/ ESL
ESL are improving but their depth is limited to a few BT have to many options for ESL to handle BT by 5 goals in fight to the finish contest.
OC to wake up and put 4 qtrs together and win by 8 goals sending Prahan back to the drawing board. 2nd best Ruckmn in the comp but it won't be enough.
OG/ Banyule disaster for OG last week but expect them to be far to big and strong around the footy for Banyule particularly in the wet. Og by 4 goals.
TP / OM -Therry cant win at home, so perhaps they can win away - who knows the form of these 2 is strange at best -Tipping OM ruin Therrys year and destroy any hope they might have held of playing finals.
On the current ladder it would appear that the D2 sides moving up to D1 are going better that the C sides coming down to D1.
This would suggest that teams on the move stay on the move regardless of the direction they are heading (up or down)
Is that so

Re the weekly reports and previews, I hope the guy who writes these does not get paid, they are at best average.
Each team should be given some equal space and the previews should be based on watching some games not waiting or hoping you can get something from a website or big Footy or from a club ringing to give you something.
While I'm having a crack pictures of scribes shoud be removed and replaced with a picture of a "star of the round" its not about the scribes its about the blokes who actually cross the white line!
Why not have DG man or old timer or Ugly write something, or if you really want to get some attention give ILLSS some space to write in.
(with his crayons)
I remember when we beat Old Geelong by 50 points, the record said that the highlight of the game was some bloke making his senior debut for Old Geelong. I've been e-mailing him two page match reports on Monday (or earlier) for the last three weeks and we still don't get a cracker. I even helped him learn how to spell the tricky name of our full forward (Keem: there's been three variations of it so far). I'd be surprised if he'd been within 20km of one of our games this year. Bring back Barry Hickey!
TIPS

Love the Barry Hickey call! Big, Bad, Bustling Barry Hickey was an absolute legend. Loved seeing him be recognised in the VAFA mag the other week. He obviously followed Old Carey around the most, however he made a huge effort to get to other games and to get to know all club officials, Presidents, coach's etc. Even some players. Loved his crazy nick names and gags. Very interesting writer. BRING BACK BARRY!

Half Back, the question is can Therry find players to cover all the guns that have been struck down by injury this year.
D Goodwin, C Bannister, J Crotty are probably Therry's 3 best players, throw in J Hanlon, Mcwhinney has missed a lot of games, and so has Boyle.
That is Therry's entire starting Midfield, and CHF, CHB and FF.
tough to cover these losses, but starting to get a few blokes back now, so they may give it a shake in the 2nd half of the season..

Knackers, yes Therry have had injuries, but i think they have just lost too many close games, even when they had good players in. Correct me if i am wrong but Boyle, C. Bannister, Crotty and McWinney have all played 7 or 8 out of 10 this year. And Goodwin and Hanlon around 50% of matches.
Other sides have had some key injuries or unavailables. For OC; White, Tiras, Kent & Battle (4 of our best) have played 20 of a possible 40 games between them. 3 or 4 other keys have only just got on the park in the last week or two.
I don't think injuries are to blame for Therrys slip from being in C last year and now not likely to even play D-Grade finals. There must be something else wrong down there?

Don't get me wrong Moss Rocket, I am not saying that is the cause of Therry's form slump, as there are plenty of blokes struggling at the moment, but don't be too surprised if they turn it around & surprise a few sides in the coming weeks.

Beware ILSS...YV's ground is a small, windswept arrangement with a 'challenging' playing surface at best. Your boys will struggle..."No joy for you - come back, one year".
NB.The after match facilities however are superb - and it is in here that I would expect your boys to shine.

Word is there is no surface....... It's a complete bog.... Can anyone confirm???
Word is there is no surface....... It's a complete bog.... Can anyone confirm???
Not bog, but no carpet surface like the manicured ground (not middle) that O.C. have. Which club has the best surface?
P.S. Trinity spent all their doe on B grade flags but obviously didnt have enough to get an A grade one.
The Oggery is a great ground to play on IMO. The front oval at Bulleen (Old Carey) is awesome. Only problem is when you get the yarra floods down there; Marc, Trinity and Carey go under water, and playing surface, after flood subsides, can be a little heavy and tacky!
They are the best two. Domoney is average at best. OM's is a windswept nightmare, BT's is ok, Leos aint too bad. Rupo?? Only seen 1 game there and it looked ok. Prahran can get very heavy (Close location of Orrong Hotel for halftime bet on the horses, means this is rated better than most)
Never been to Banyule or Therry!
Keep the tips coming in! Go D1:)

Back in the olden days when we were in D4, Eltham OC had a brilliant ground... the surface was one of the best... and to top it off had the use of the school facilities after the game (Not sure what school?) ... Nothing like playing a hard game of footy and then jumping in the indoor pool to recover.

ILSS - Old Eltham Collegians do play at a school...funnily enough, its called Eltham College :)
Old Carey playing surface and associated facilities wins hands down. Junction Oval great..and Como not far behind...Marcellin and Harry Trott not bad either. Uni Blues have the best shower set-up (so many showers - so little time) - too bad the polished floorboards in the away rooms means you slip on your ass in your boots every 5 minutes....
Both Ivanhoe/Assumption & Therry's grounds (although I have not seen it in 3 years) make Domeney Reserve look good. Used to struggle to find a blade of grass at Parade too!
Parkside's ground in the Footscray League was one of the best I have been on (think its called the Merv Hughes Oval). Brooklyn and West Footscray amongst the worst I have seen. Springvale Districts have to sweep their ground for syringes before an SFL official will give the all-clear the morning of every home game...
FYI - Think St Leos may get over BT this week.
Nice work conduct! ILSSully.....you are a funny man. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you knew what the OC in Eltham stood for, and that you were just being funny. But somehow i think i may be wrong!?!?!:D
If BT are going to lose one, it seems it is only going to be at home. Let's hope not this week, as they have a big night on Saturday with the big fundraising auction night (Can all read about this on the VAFA website)
Good luck with it all Bullant families and friends. A difficult night, but an important one for the family. Best of luck with it all!!!!!:thumbsu:

Agree with you DG. Sarah Bone was a lovely girl and the Bone family are great people and supporters of the club (Sarah's brothers are ripping blokes). I tipped an ESL win on face value - not realising the significance of the day (should have read the VAFA website I guess).
I take it back with my tail between my legs - BT won't let this one slip on such an important day. From all reports the fundraising night is a sell-out - a fantastic outcome for a fantastic family.

Rupo to just get the job done (biggest game of the round by far, a real season shaper. Having said that though, all games can throw up a surprise so we wont really know until rnd18 is come and gone)

This week has probably been the best week in the D1 footy forum. The beers tonight at Rupo were bloody good. Seems like Collegians, Section One Under 19's has pulled the pin on the game on Saturday. This is as weak as ****, i don't care what there excuse is. This club is on top of "B: Grade and played in the Grand Final of Under 19 section 1 last year. This is a joke. This is a negative for Amateur Footy. Collegians your a disgrace. You beat us 2 years ago in the second semi in Division 2 went on to win the premiership by over 100 pts and you cant front up 18 months later to a division 1 game.
On a brighter note looking forward to a great round of D1 footy on Saturday.
Is that so

Seems that all the scribes are putting their team of the half year down, so why don't we help ours by posting thoughts in the this forum .
My thoughts on ball and forwards as follows:
Ruck: Waters BT, Radywonik Prahan
RR: Parton OC , Shepherd Muller - Banyule, Mackenzie ESL
Rov: Collins OC, Fleming OM,
HFF: Chivas BT CHF: Basile OM HFF: Vickers Willis OG
FP: Lecordier YV FF: Banister TP FP: Tiras OC
Thoughts?

Kingbrown, thats big news! FYI, a few years back Collegians went to U19 Section1 (their seniors were in A Grade at the time) after winning the Section 2 premiership..and when they came up against the reigning Section 1 premier in Marcellin...guess what they did? They forfeited that day too....seems to be history repeating itself this year?
Before we all get too upset though, everyone would know that East Keilor (Essendon District A Grade) pulled the pin at half time of their senior game last weekend! And Seddon seniors (in A Grade Footscray District) have folded half way through the season (rumoured to be interested in re-forming and entering D4 next year!!). Thats pretty sad for local footy.:thumbsd:
Sorry long time no post, I see therry have been struggling the past few weeks. Is this because of Injuries or just being beaten by better sides. I have heard a rumour though that they will be playing a 2 pronged attack on Saturday, if I wasn't playing I would be going down to watch the 2 ff's have a field day!
Also can someone tell me when Therry play Rupo, as I have read all the banter on here and maybe that one will be match of the round

Not sure Therry's two pronged attack will be able to secure a win down at OM's. But we will wait and see!
Therry play Rupo (at Rupo) in rd 14 (29/7) This will be a big one. If Therry are still a chance at sneaking into 4th at that stage of the season, it will probably be Rupos place they will be eyeing off!
Still waiting on some tips gents!

Have heard that G.O'Connor is the second man in that 2 pronged attack you were talking about.
Not sure about McWhinney, but believe he is right to go.

I also hear that club champion, a grade rep Jason Reddick is making a return. I here he is currently the runner and looks as good as he ever did! Experince is the key here and I would say they are looking at a return to c grade next year........is it to late though!!
Also heard the "Easty" was back from New York. Any one know about that
I think it is a little too late. 3-4 inclusions cannot cover the fact that the club is struggling. Losing at home to a side that was 0-9 (28 scoring shots to 15) is just way off finals pace.
They would need to win virtually all games for the remainder of the season. They play tough away games against OM's, YV, BT and Rupo, as well as having to face up against the OGS and OC. Can't really see them making it!
Important to ensure some of these key late season ins, hang around and play a full season next year.
C grade 2008 would be a great goal for the whole club to push towards!!

Sorry ILSS I just had to pick myself up off the floor, that comment about Rupo having a massive heart.............mate I had the pleasure of sitting on the sidelines (due to injury) to watch your game against Therry, and as I have been quoted in saying before Rupo are very skillful and are quick, but they have to go down as one of the softest sides playing D1, I mean you had one bloke with a tattoo and a head band he looked more suited to a day out with the National Ballet than a football field, the way he prounced around. Yes you did have one or 2 hard nuts but the rest would be more suited at an U12 level. So I just hope that when we next play you in 3/4 weeks that you are playing and that it is a cold winters day, becuase ILSS then you will have to go in for the hard ball.
