Pre season is always good to catch a glimpse of some future guns, I figured I'd find out which young crow boys have been shwoing glimpses thus far in the NAB cup.

Any numbers/names you think I should keep an eye on? I notice S.Thompson has gone bald btw, good look for him... bwahahaha... but seriosuly, drop some names.

p.s. if you're wanting to keep an eye on soem dees youngsters I'd be looking out particularly for Colin Sylvia, number 12 has been nothing short of dominating clearances and laying monstrous tackles on all about (slung Jamie Charman to teh ground like a ragdoll against Brisbane). Very Roo-like imo.

Oh, and there's a massive unit by the name of Paul Johnson who's done some nice things too. You will notice this bloke regardless, must be close to the biggest bloke in the AFL.

A few youngsters in particular have shown some promising signs. the following is a brief summary of those that played last week and will likely hold their spot in the team.

C Knights: Large bodied midfielder. Shows good strength over the ball and excellent ball getting ability. Does have tendency to occasionally take two grabs at the ball but overall clean by hand and foot. Foot skills seem to have improved over the pre-season. Genuine chance at the rising star award.

N Van Berlo: medium size running defender. Great courage and athleticism. Not as naturally prolific as knights but looks the goods. May develop into a Hart/Torney style half back.

I Maric: 19 y.o. ruckman. Is quickly developing an AFL body. However may be a year or two away from playing consistent AFL football. Does have good natural strength and tapping ability with both hands. Has shown courage backing into the opposition forward line. Struggles a bit with the ball below his knees but so do most ruckmen. good prospect.

B Vince: I have only seen him play once and that was last week. May struggle for pace over 5-10 meters but has some real class. One touch footballer with real elusiveness and is strong overhead. Did a few McLeod type things on the weekend and IMO was the most impressive of all rookies n that game. May be a flash in the pan may be a great half forward. Too early to tell.

L Jericho: an enigma. Did some great things but seems to be either disinterested, lazy or soft a large portion of the time. Needs to pull his finger out or this may be his last year on the list.

B Reilly: Appears to be on the verge of a breakout year. Has shown real courage and commitment to the team so far this pre-season. Finaly has an AFL ready body and may be able to force his way into the midfield.

Gets!

In particular look out for:

Chris Knights, Richard Douglas (if he plays), Bernie Vince and Jason Porpylzia (once again, if he plays).

Chris Knights is the big one, 28 touches against Port, something similar against the Hawks, not sure the exact count.

Played consistant footy last year for the Eagles in the SANFL regulary got 25+ touches and seemed to always kick a goal or two.

Knights only had 16 touches against Hawks ;)

Everyone has pretty much covered it so far. Younger players have been the reason why we have made the semis. Our big guns have spent a lot of time on the interchange bench. Some haven't even played. We have 8 players missing from our best 22 from last year. Youngsters have had a big workload and a lot of responsibility and they are performing really well.

Porplyzia won't play which is disappointing. He will miss another week. Bock is out and the names being mentioned in Adelaide Media as replacements are Meesen and Douglas. 2nd year ruck man and a first year, skinny as a rake midfielder. I don't expect too much from them. John Hinge will also miss. From those that will play these are the ones to keep an eye on:

7. Nathan Van Berlo (utility)
20. Ivan Maric (ruckman)
21. Chris Knights (midfielder)
28. Bernie Vince (HFF/Midfield)
33. Brent Reilly (midfielder) - While he has been around for a while, this is his make or break year. His PS form to date has been excellent. Attack on the man and the ball is exceptional. He went off early in the 3rd quarter against Port with a hip injury but still had 6 tackles when he left the field. He followed that up by 8 tackle performance against Hawks. Thats 14 tackles in 6 quarters of footy

I actually thought he wasnt as prolific as the last week but all the reports I read and saw he was named as best player I assumed he had more touches than I first gave him credit for.

That's amazing. The other thing I like about his game is that he is also burrowing in to get the ball. It's not as though he's just standing back and then waiting to tackle the ball player.

Reilly looks like he knows he needs to lift to be a regular this year, superb last week. Knights kicked a couple of gems last week, seems he has improved his kicking for goal as he was terrible for the Hybrids last year!

No your right - the performance against Hawthorn was terribly over-rated whilst IMO Vinces game has been terribly under-rated.

As Craig continues to say - i we could teach Knights something about defence - now that's a red flag if you ask me.

Not saying he doesn't have talent......just that most are getting a little carried away with his offensive game and not factoring other parts that need addressing

We have him for this year and next, when I saw Daniel Bell and Mark Jamar at Blue I asked Belly if any of the Adelaide boys were getting homesick like Scotty T he replied with "nah adelaide's a ********ing hole anyway, we're all lvoing it here" hopefully he wasn't urinating in my ear.

btw

Sylvia - 12
Jones - 2
Bate - Just look for the giant redheaded midfielder, seriosuly the kid would have gone top 5 in the last draft if he wasn't drafted at pick 10 as a bottom ager by us the year before. Won the morrish medal at 17, big wraps, moves very quickly for 191cm 89kg guy.

Yes, I'll certainly be keeping my eye out on young Master Bate. He had a very good game against the Bulldogs.
We had a few of the guys over at our house for tea one night (Bell, Jamar, Johnson) but my parents wouldn't let me hassle Belly about going home. In fact, I wasn't allowed to mention that I go for the Crows. I think they saw all my Crows gear when they were getting a tour of the house though. :D

A liitle off subject BUT I watched Watts last week in his first game and was thinking to myself at the end of the first qtr ----we were screwed!!!!

He was great - busted packs, looked sharp, kicked beautifully.

But as the game progressed he fell out of it (pretty much as he was descibed pre-draft) - seemed to lack the aerobic capacity to play the CHF role of todays game.
After qtr time didn't present as he should have as he was often out of position or not making the contest.

Jury is out

Had them over for dinner? Does your dad work at MFC or something? Belly is a great bloke, seemed really friendly when I met him. One of the hardest working footballers we have as well, really wants to cement a spot in the best 22.

And yes, Bate will surprise a few this year, if he had of been drafted this year as he should have - there'd be a lot more hype about him. Melbourne could have made a very good move by taking him early I think.

Yeah, I mentioned in another thread that he is one of the runners. He also used to play for them.
