Never saw him, but I was reading about how his batting was so slow it was demoralising for BOTH sides and that he (apparently) was deliberately run out a few times by teammates to increase the run-rate. I would imagine he would be the first if we were doing all-time.
Of current players, Kallis can be completely pinned down against reasonable bowling. If the bowling is bad however, he generally scores quickly via lots of boundries. Whilst he can score quickly these days in test cricket, Justin Langer can get awfully stuck in the one-day game. Michael Vaughan also is a nightmare in one-day cricket.
I don't think Dravid and Key are as bad as you think (Dravid has definitely improved) - it is only because their revolves around strick batting technique.
Kallis scores just as fast as Dravid, not much difference.
Who scores faster in the ODI format? Kallis or Dravid?
Katich
Mubarak (from what I saw in the VB series anyway)
Kallis
Dravid
Anyone can bat slowly but these 4 seem to do it day in day out

Nothing wrong with slow batting in the Test Arena. Not everybody can be like Afridi/Gilchrist etc. Some blokes really value their wickets and work hard for their runs and should be seen in a negative light.
In One Dayers blokes like Kallis and Dravid still have strike rates over 70 which is solid, you need somone to be an anchor. Dravid has also improved that he can turn it on when needed now. One of the most versatile cricketers going around (along with my boy Hussey ;)).
who can ever forget gavaskars 36 not out off 174 balls as he batted for the entire 60 overs in the 1975 world cup

Dravid scores suprisingly fast. He dosent hit many boundries but he nudges singles superbly.

Anyone who saw Chris Tavare bat will never criticize current players for slow batting. Tavare made Kallis look like Don Bradman.

Funny thing is Tavare wasnt like that in County cricket, it was just his job in the test team to stay there.
Wasnt that long ago that Darren Ramshaw would put on the snail shell and slime his way to a 1/2 century in 4 hours too!!

Paul Collingwood is scoring at Kallis like speed atm :p
ahh geoffery boycott. Highest score 240 odd n.o!
And dropped the next test!!
reason why was because he batted over 4 days.
Another story was of Ian Botham in his first test, as he went out to bat, the english captain at time told botham as he went out to run out boycott or tell him to get a move on. So he duely hit the first ball to the cover fieldsman and called boycott through and run him out!:D

Yet off the field as commentators, Boycott is interesting to listen to & Beefy is boring as hell. Go figure.

You blokes aren't old enough to remember some of the real slow coaches from the past.
Trevor Bailey and 'Slasher' Mckay come to mind. Both very useful players for their countries though.
