View Full Version : Did anyone else think Egan beat Pavlich?

I sure did. I was at the game and I thought that Egan towelled him up. Pavlich is a star of the game, but was outpointed numerous times by Egan. Sure he took 8 marks and have 16 odd disposals, but I would say that much more than half of those were undamaging marks/posessions on the wing or flank.
I am very, very excited about Egan.
Most docker supporters concede Egan had Pav under wraps. It was a close contest that went Egans way in my opinion. It definately wasn't a towelling like you suggested.
Pav will be better for the run. Egan is a pretty exciting prospect.

Maybe not a towelling but considering the respective status of the two, it was a fair beating.
Also have seen papers/websites have had Pavlich in the best for Freo. I just didn't see it that way at all.

Yeah its laughable, they also said Farmer had a bad game. I thought he did alright. Walls said that Farmer got dragged for a 1 handed attempt at a mark. That just wasn't the case. The ball was kicked over his head.
Pavlich did alright, but wasn't in our best. I don't pay particular attention to the best player lists.
Pavlich by a nose.
Now thats giving Pavlich far too much credit :)

Between Egan and Milburn I think they won the game for us.

Yes. I thought that he beat him. Pavlich did lead fairly wide and found the footy when he did so but Egan tended to control the central corridor. Pav probably had him done for speed and found a bit of footy out on the flanks but wasn't really as damaging as Egan was taking marks in the back fifty.
Egan beat him but Pav wasn't disgraced. The battle was the highlight of the night.

For draft pick 62 Egan has got to be the best value in the team. Coming from a somewhat weak draft Egan looks to be a AA type player. How good will it be having EGan, Harley, Scarlett and Mooney in the one team.

i've been a big wrap for egan ever since he round 1 last year when he backed into a pack as Matty Richardson came flying out of the goal square and last night he was terrific... Pavlich didn't play badly but he could only get is hands on the pill from the wing or thanks to the umpire

I thought early Pav was beating him on a lead. But Matt had him covered in contests. They were both credited with 8 marks, so I guess that says something. Overall though, with Pav getting 1.3 he didn't hurt us.

50/50.
Egan is a solid type. Underrated.

we prefer to think of him as a well-kept secret.
As to who won the battle, Pav was made to earn far too much for his return of.. 1.2? Egan wins the night through sheer harassment. I reckon Pav would agree.

Egan did well but if Pavlich kicked straight it may have been a little different.
Pav is an awesome player to hold him down to what he did was a super effort

Chuck in Enright as well, I thought he stood up when it counted. As for Egan vs. Pav, Egan took the points as the maggots gave Pav a couple of frees that I am still trying to work out.
Not sure if he definitively beat him on the night, but he more than held his own, which is as good as an outright win against Pavlich.
Been mentioned all over this thread, but the fact that Pavlich had to run far and wide down the wings for his marks (considering how closely he's been playing in between half forward and full forward in recent weeks) shows how hard Egan made him work, and how concisely he beat Pavlich in the one-on-one contests within the fifty.
Pavlich hardly played poorly, but his influence on the game was markedly down thanks to Egan's efforts - stats do little to indicate his game; 8 marks, but how many counted for something?
I thought in most of thew 1-1 comtests Egan more then held his own, Pavlich got him on the lead up the ground but no body can stop pavlich when he leads up, Egan is doing a great job and it only gets tougher, J.brown Rnd 1 at skilled, egan will have to be on his game but i have enough faith in him at this stage.

Walls is an absolute joke as a comments man. Some of his comments are moronic. He changes his mind about things about 57 times a game depends on who is in front.Any one who takes any credence from what he says is as silly as he is.
I agree with rgauci, Farmer was not dragged for that,in fact I wonder if he was dreagged at all.He suffered cramp.
Pav played ok and not bad considering it is only his second hitout for the season.

He wasn't dragged. He rolled his ankle when he stuffed up the mark.
I think the reality is, if Pavlich had kicked straight, Egan would have been in a bit of trouble.
Luckily though, Egan forced him to have difficult shots at goal so he ended up breaking even.
Egan in one on one contests was superb, fantastic game i believe. Pavlich is a superstar and I reckon they were probs even throughout the game.

I dont understand how people could call that even. PAV got
SPANKED
His 1 goal came from a staged free kick that could have won an oscar or maybe an award for being a SOFT AS ******** girl. Had no influence on the game yet the dockers went to him almost twice as much as ANY other forward on the ground. His attitude was lousy, his game soft. Full honours to Egan, there is NO WAY that contest was 50/50 and for a fremantle supporter to come in here and say Pav was ahead just shows how you have come acustomed to FAILURE. As for robert walls he speaks utter CRAP most (nearly all) of the time but one thing he said was 100% correct. Fremantle REFUSED to do the hard things, put their head over the ball and play contested footy when the game was there, it looked like a "get the ball away from me" contest in the 4th quarter. NOBODY wanted it. Pav lead the way too, tried to claim marks that werent there, dived for free kicks, complained to umpires when he was BEATEN in one out contests. If he wants the ball someone tell him he just needs to go and get it, not out on the wing, not in the pocket, in front of goal, he is definately good enough.

Yeah this is how I saw it.
Egan just red the flight path better than Pavlich. Quite a few times Egan was able to get to the drop of the ball and was strong enough to hold his ground against Pav. They showed a new stat on 10 showing the "go to players inside 50" during the last quarter and Freo had kicked it to Pav about 14 or so times where as Geelongs highest was Mooney who had it kick in his direction only 5 times. That just shows to keep him to 4 scoring shots was an effort in itself but one out, body on body, Egan looks the goods.

Pav had about 15 or 16 possessions and a goal in the first half, but only had about 2-3 possessions in the second half. I think it's pretty obvious from that that Pav was better to start with, but Egan towelled him up in the second.

I think Egan definately won out on the night.
Pav after a shoulder op and knee op during post/pre season will better for the run considering he has played no intraclub matches and has only played last week and this week.
I think the reality is, if Pavlich had kicked straight, Egan would have been in a bit of trouble.
Luckily though, Egan forced him to have difficult shots at goal so he ended up breaking even.
I think that was the thing, If Pav had kicked straight then it would have looked worse for Egan. But these misses came from tough shots, which meant that Egan was able to push him out of range or in a position that he did not enjoy.

Egan played well on Brown during the Brisbane massacre last year. Brown didn't get a free ride for the whole game, and as I recall at the end Brown ran up and gave him a pat and some encouraging words. Egan will be better.

The thing about judging a contest between a forward and a defender is you need to assess them on what their respective jobs are. Pavlich's role was pretty much CHF - to present as a strong target, to take marks on or around 50m and to kick 2-3 goals. Egan's job as a CHB was to negate his opponent by pushing him wide, pushing him away from goal and perhaps taking some marks and rebounding. In Pav's role I would give him a 6/10. He took enough marks and provided a great leading target but was beaten soundly in the one on ones and kicked his only goal from a staged free kick. I would give Egan 7/10. He beat Pav soundly in the one on ones, pushed his opponent up the ground and wide but was found out on the lead and gave Pavlich too much space at times.
The thing about Pavlich is that he's such a versatile player that you are likely to conceed to him either on the lead or one-on-one. It's rare that an opponent can have him covered in both areas. If we put say, Milburn on him, Pav would have taken more one on one. Egan had his measure in that area though.
Overall, was a great contest though and I'm very excited about Egan.
I'm glad you guys are talking about this contest, I got onto this board to post something about it and this thread was already here! I know Pav got pretty good stats for the match, other than his goal kicking, but I really think he was soundly beaten by Egan. That really is the first time I think I've ever seen Pavlich get beaten by his opponent.
My mother's a mad Cats supporter and we've been talking about Egan all week! Great player and another great addition to probably the best defence in the league!
Great win for you guys last week! Good luck in Adelaide! And good luck in the season proper!
