Damage Inc.
Back in the day when I was proud to call myself a fan.... unlike now...
I second SydneyBomber's closing remark.
Strangely, I absolutely love Ride the Lightning! Although I love their Fades, Sanitariums, Ones, Orions, this song still gets me going ahead of any other. The energy is awesome.
It is the perfect combination of their older thrash sound and their newer (read mid 80's) "trademark" sound. Unfortunately, they changed again. :( :(
"Someone help me!
OH PLEASE GOD HELP ME!
They're trying to take it all away
I don't want to dieeeeeeeee!!!"

Right on the money but instead of Damage may'be Master of Puppets

Orion and To Live is To Die are killer solos, just showed how much talent they had.
If Cliff (RIP) had not passed away, I don't think they would have gone in the direction they have. He was the main force behind Puppets, and really, it is arguably their best ever work. Not a downer on Newstead, but Cliff was Metallica in my opinion.

Metallica ceased to exist after 1989....!
The entire Master of Puppets album is a highlight.

Amen. He was the dude that brought melody into Metallica. R.I.P

Master of Puppets.
And pffftttt to the "they've sold out" crowd. IMHO Load was their best album from a song point of view. MOP was the strongest album from a thrash/speed metal POV. There's no reason why they should stay the same all the time. I for one would have been disappointed if their most recent album was exactly the same as the first.

But they did sell out mate. They still can write a good song, but they sold their souls a long time ago.....
Not just musicially, attitude wise, even the Napster fiasco was anti Metallica, they were the band that used to spit on conventional methods, now they bow down to them.
I agree that change is good, but I disagree that bowing down to the almighty dollar is the right way to go about it.
Puppets & Lightning!

You know what? I think you're right too. But that's exactly my point. I guess I don't really mind what they stand for as long as they can churn out a good song. That's all I want from them, not an ideal, not some message or whatever. interestingly enough, they haven't really come out with a great album since load. reload was load 2nds. garage inc was rebadged garage days. s&m was metallica with backing orchestra (they could have done SO MUCH MORE with the arrangement). When they go for originals they can still rip it up, IMO.
Back in my younger days, just on a decade ago now, nothing would get my on the dance floor of the Cathouse faster than Master of Puppets.
It was generally a blokes only song but dancing and banging my head in a sea of babes with long sweaty flowing locks was my idea of heaven. ;)
Ahhhh the memories.

That's fair enough dude, but I'll read an interview with them or see some footage of them & think....are these the dudes that used to get my blood pumping in their Master era?
Man- I would've given my left testicle to see them opening up for Ozzy! what a show that would've been....
You're point is taken & well said!
They DID sell out.... I have an interview from 1997 in which the band describe the process of getting ideas and recording the self titled (aka Black) album.
Bob Rock was introduced specifically to get what Lars Ulrich referred to as "chart action". The band also made a conscious effort not to include the 8-9 minute epics which has graced their previous albums because they wanted to appeal more to people that hadn't bought any Metallica albums before than to their fans that had made them a successful and respected metal act.
Did the conscious change in direction improve the band? I suppose that's up to personal opinion.
I believe that just because a band sells out by changing their music, it doesn't mean their new music is always crap. Metallica was a pretty good album, Reload had a couple of good songs, and the symphony and cover album money-spinners sound great despite the lack of new material.
Some of my favourite Metallica songs are from the 1990s - good hard rock songs like Whiskey In The Jar, No Leaf Clover, Wherever I May Roam and Unforgiven (original & II).
But there is no way the sound and style of these songs can be compared to the raw thrash of the first few years.
Good band? Yes.
Good in the 1990s? Yes. To an extent.
Sell outs? Yes. They admit it.

Met him...just a general ****er!
Jason (as expected) was the nicer guy, that seemed to care about the fans....happy to do the signing, picture taking, all that stuff- on his own! That's a lot of fans hassling him...
Unforgiven I and II, Enter Sandman, One, Nothing Else Matters & Low Man's Lyric would have to be my favourites. Theres plenty more though.

Not me! :(
With all the banngings on about Master being their best album, I would like to say that Kill 'Em All was metal perfection from top to toe!
The first four songs on Ride is simply the best half a metal album ever made. It is a shame it was let down a bit by the remaining songs (Creeping Death is a classic though!).
As Darky said, their conscious move to utilise Bob Rock, was due to their desire to own personal jets. When you have a style like theirs, it would be easy to clone yourself, pop it up a bit and flog it off to the masses!
If people still like their new stuff, fair play to you. It's not all bad and at the very least it isn't Matchbox20 or Creed! It's just us older folk knew the band inside out before the black album and it was, with out a shadow of a doubt, a better outfit who played for the love of music.
Cliff will be forever missed!

My personal favourties are One, For Whom The Bell Tolls, and Unforgiven (I & II)
To say they are sell outs is correct. They have all admitted it. And so fuking what?
I don't care if they are sell outs. They have worked to get where they are. They have made a name for themselves. And they deserve it, bloody oath they do. I must say ReLoad, wasn't the best CD, but hell that happens. A lot of people critisise S&M, and I start to get sick of it. I think S&M had a lot of potential, hell i know they couldv'e made it better, but it was musical genius that created it, and at the moment, S & M is the most common Metallica CD i play, followed by Kill Em All.
One, Entersandman and So what. Fuel is ok.
Don't like most of their 90's stuff, not because they are sell outs, just think older stuff has more heart.
Uhhhhh...Enter sandman, I guess.
i am not a fan of metallica at all, but i like that song that goes "off to never never land"
dunno what it is, but its ok

That'd be Enter Sandman
And I couldn't give a crap if they sold out. They were one of the best bands in the world before Black, and are one of the best bands in the world after Black

Let me just start to say that this is a VERY BAD topic for me to find, with some time on my hands, and you are all VERY LUCKY that I haven't listened to a Metallica song for over six months! (since my last visit away, but no cd's with me this time)
My perspective, was that in 1985, (86?)...they came to Australia, touring with Ride The Lightning. I bought this (my first ever Album), at the age of 5/6/whatever year it was (born in 80). If not for me wanting to buy cd's in the last 10 years, I would still have it (I made the mistake of selling it for about $20 in a garage sale). It's now apparently worth a rather large sum of money, as it was a limited press for the Australian Tour.
Since then, I have purchased every album they have made, many they have contributed on, and a collection of between 50 and 60 covers they have done.
An unabashed Metallica fan, I admittadly took a LONG time to bring Load and Reload out for second listenings...but they eventually became 'good' songs.
My thoughts?
Black album is possibly the GREATEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME (in my opinion). But then again, I would only compare it to PJ's Ten, Soundgarden's....(um...Down on the Upside? The one with Black Hole Sun), and Tool's Opiate. (Though that is supposedly a single).
My favourite songs would be:
Nothing Else Matters = Sang a beautiful duet when breaking up with a long-time gf (moving away). Still hard to hear without the wind blowing dust in my eyes
One = Sheer power. Second song I learnt to play on guitar. Beautiful start, smooth accelleration, and for a long time, what I thought was the fastest ever finish.
Creeping Death = Like most of the RTL album, brilliant
Enter Sandman = First song I learnt on guitar. Learnt it buy rote, and played it at my high school leavers, along with a heap of Nirvana/Pearl Jam/Metallica/other stuff. I call the start thing a 'rolling riff' don't really know why, but I use the same stuff in many of my originals.
Unfogiven = Played at a schoolmate's funeral...so right up there.
Sanitarium = For a while, was my depression song. (Till I put my fist through the wall...not such a problem...till I realised we've got bloody brick inside them!)
Battery - Just liked it
Master of Puppets - Soooo much better live.
Ride The lightning = Perhaps the best example of Metallicaism (or so I've been told)
Orion/Pulling Teeth/CAll of Ktulu/To Live is to die = As mentioned elsewhere, Metallica's true talents were on show more when James was playing rather than singing.
The entire S&M CD. Oh...to think what it could have been...instead just a VERY good album.
A lot of their covers are very good...and quite original...also some unepexcted.
and wouldn't you know it? I can't think of a single one at the moment.
I'll get back to you on that one.
Another one I really liked (though kinda morbid), not sure what it was called (an untitled mp3 I was sent).
Played flat-chat, Lyrics something like:
Die, Die, Die, Die, Die, Die, Die... (anthem....like TNT from ACDC)
When I look upon your face,
I see ??? ??? ??? disgrace
blood...???...???.....war
nothing but a ??? ...whore?
guessing at most of it...not sure if it's James singing, sounds more like Jason to me.
But not Die Die my Darling, nor one off their cd's.
Enter Sandman and Unforgiven

Um, you sure about that?
Their first tour here was in 1990 for AJFA.
Metallica were doing the Ozzy tour throughout the states at that time.
You aren't thinking of Iron Maiden or some other band that toured at that time?

I most certainly am. I can't remember when, but I was a boy, and went with my Uncle who was a fan, (but not majorly). It was sometime between 1985-1986-1987.
When did RTL come out? I'm guessing it would be the end of a world tour or something. They did two gigs, Melbourne, and Sydney (I think, but may have been Melbourne, Sydney and Gold Coast).
When they came down in 1990? (1991?) I wanted to go back, but just couldn't afford to. I managed to get hold of a pirated video of the concert though (setting me back close on $50), but it was sh*t, and cut-out before the end.

Not too many people rate 'And justice for all' as i thought that was one of their best albums, the tempo changes, the guitar solos & everything else was pretty much perfect to me. My favourite song would be to live is to die, as everything in that song to me is brilliant especially the guitar solo. :thumbsu:
