Lawson tips Clark for Ashes role
By Sam Lyon

Clark has been tipped to cement his place in the Australia side

Former Australia paceman Geoff Lawson has tipped Stuart Clark to have a big impact in next winter's Ashes series against England.

The New South Wales seamer bagged nine wickets in a fine debut against South Africa and Lawson insists he "could cause England all sorts of problems".

Lawson also cast doubt on key bowler Glenn McGrath's future in the game.

He told BBC Sport: "Glenn's career is up in the air at the moment and many of us believe he may not play again."

The 36-year-old has not played since the Ashes as he is caring for his wife, who is ill with cancer.

Despite that, and the injury problems he suffered during the series defeat to England last summer, he has said he is not making any plans for next winter at this stage.

But Lawson said: "With his age and the injury problems he's had, not to mention his situation at home, nobody can really say for sure he'll be back."

Clark's emergence, however, is good news for Australia as he has similar line and length qualities.

"Stuart really is comparable to Glenn in many ways.

"His greatest asset is his brain, he really knows his game and the game of cricket. He's accurate and consistent and, as a tall man, he generates good bounce even though he's not explosively fast," said Lawson, who has coached him at state level for New South Wales.

"He's got to be in pole position to cement his place in the side now after what was a very impressive debut."

England will have to do a certain amount of work on him

Geoff Lawson on Stuart Clark

The 30-year-old, who has 23 wickets in 15 one-day internationals at an average of 29.91, was given his chance at the top level after "consistently proving himself, season after season, with his district" says Lawson.

He has 211 wickets in 62 first class matches and his experience of playing on Australian pitches should serve him well in the future.

Lawson said: "He's grown up and learnt his cricket at the Sydney Cricket Ground, which doesn't exactly consistently offer assistance to the bowlers.

"Because of that he's learned to be controlled and that has served him well.

"England will have to do a certain amount of work on him if he lines up against them next winter."

the first signs for clark as a test bowler are good. lets see how he goes in the next 4 tests (if he gets to play them) before we start judging him. tait and bracken will no doubt be applying pressure for a bowling spot in the team too.

besides, lawson has been known for his NSW bias in the past.

NSW bias through and through. If anyone else took those figures from debut and they were not from NSW, you would not hear from Lawson

It's one thing to bowl well on a pitch suiting fast bowling, but it is another thing entirely to become a McGrath like bowler...

I hope like hell he plays on the Ashes because if Australia have pitches that suit Clark then it will be our bowlers greatest dreams come true :)

Wasn't Henry also calling Clarke the "next Doug Walters" after his 150? We all know how that turned out. Not a scratch on Clark, he bowled excellently, but lets give him a few more tests before we trot out the predictions.

Fancy a person talking up someone from their state!

Its only every second day that someone here is talking up Brad Hodge or Cameron White?

the only diff jaymin is that we can talkup our own state players ad nauseum, but no one listens. henry says something and foxsports/sports tonite etc run with it. unforunately the selectors dont listen to bigfooty :(

hodge should be talked up anyway, hes done nothing wrong.

someone should ask lawson whether clark and mcgrath should/can play in the same side given they are essentially the same bowler.

Hodge played well but did not set the world on fire. The only reason he's talked up and seen as "overrated" is because he was dropped without doing much wrong.

Well that explains it, seems you can bypass the state system and get selected on grade form these days if you're from NSW...

Clark's done brilliantly but keep it in your pants for now Henry

Alan Donald showing his NSW bias again in this mornings Herald Sun. Says Stuart Clark will take 250 test wickets and would be in the Australian team for the next 5-6 years if he was in charge.

He'd probably say yes to that question. A pace attack of McGrath, Lee and Clark would be a dream come true.

Geoff Lawson is/was the NSW bowling coach. He will always pump up his own players, particularly the quick bowlers, because of that connection. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that and we see bias in sports commentary all the time. People who follow cricket know to take Lawson's comments with a grain of salt when discussing NSW players. It is the same as when Darren Berry opens his mouth about Victorians or Heals about Queensland....I've said before, every State has at least one "rent a quote" - Lawson and Mark Waugh do the job on behalf of parochial New South Welshmen.

At the end of the day, Clark's results in his debut Test speak for themselves. However, it is extremely premature to suggest he will take 250 test wickets or even be around for the Ashes. On McGrath's return, Clark won't even be in the XI if two spinners are played.

I am sure Clark knows this but it takes more than one really good performance to secure your spot in the side - ask B. Hodge about that.

A bit of a knee-jerk reaction there, he wouldn't have known Clark from a bar of soap 6 months ago, but of course you'd be impressed by a 9-fer on debut. Donald is merely trying to make Clark sound like some kind of magician that is unstoppable, kind of deflecting attention from his side's poor batting.

It takes a while to take 250 Test wickets though, I doubt Clark will be around even for his district side in 5 years.

What are you actually basing that on?

His talent (or lack thereof).
