View Full Version : Lewis defends 'freaky' figures

IT HAS been hailed as the best one-day match ever but Mick Lewis is not about to sit down and watch how South Africa dismantled the Australian attack and overcame the greatest limited-overs total in one epic afternoon in Johannesburg last week.

But make no mistake: the Victorian paceman pilloried for the record sum of 0-113 from his 10 overs in that match does not believe he did anything wrong.

In fact, having had a few days to deal with his new "world record holder" status, Lewis is adamant there is nothing he would change about his bowling that day.

"It's not like I bowled a heap of pies, I actually bowled quite well. It was just one of those freaky games," Lewis said.

"I wouldn't have bowled 10 overs if I was bowling a heap of crap and Punter didn't have faith and confidence in me. If you look at the game, everyone was going for eight and 10 an over from both sides. I've been singled out because I went for 100 but who knows, if everyone had bowled 10, a few blokes could have gone for 100 runs.

"We had plans to bowl to everyone and when they started to go berserk like they did, we came up with a few plans and plan A didn't work so we went to plan B. Once you get out there and you start changing your mind about what you want to do, that's when you really get in trouble. I don't think I would have bowled any differently."

Lewis takes heart from the words of vice-captain Adam Gilchrist, who told him not to worry too much because "you didn't bowl that bad and if I took that catch off (centurion Herschelle) Gibbs or if Bracks (Nathan Bracken) had taken that catch off Gibbs" off his bowling, then it would have been a different match.

Despite reports to the contrary, the 31-year-old is confident that he has not harmed his international prospects too much. While next year's World Cup has been looming large on the minds of most Australian hopefuls, the right armer is unperturbed.

"(Wanderers) was one game, it's my one bad bad game for Australia. Look, I'm not a selector, but they're in the job for a reason, they're smart and I'm sure they just don't look at one game and say, 'He's not up to it'."

So Lewis is shifting his focus towards this week and Victoria, which will contest its second Pura Cup final in two years from Friday, against Queensland at the Gabba.

*by the way Hack and Legendary are not real descriptions, just those mentioned by the Victorian wannabes on BigFooty

How did Clark go in the one-dayer? I believe he got smashed... Who's to say Lewis wouldn't have also bowled well in those conditions in the Test?

I think Clark had 0 for 54 for 6 so he was going at a fair rate. I bet Clark would prefer to bowl to the Saffies in a test than in Pura Cup cricket judging by his performances.

Yes, Chappell did say that and it led to a string of jokes like engineers saying they're designing great buildings, bridges, pity about them falling down etc.:D

Begs the question... If he didn't bowl so well what would he figures have been???

Of course noone will remember his effort because he only bowled 6 overs, NONE of them which were at the death. Clark bowled some absolute tripe, and the fact that he got 10 in the next Test shows what a joke of a match it was when talking about bowlers. Lewis cannot be judged on one game. You wouldn't write off Clark after watching his 0/54 off 6 would you?

Strange that he feels full tosses on the leg stump is good bowling

He's just trying to get his confidence up. If he believes that, good for him...regardless the game wasn't a true reflection of anyone's bowling...Bracken was really the only one who bowled well under the circumstances.

Good players always strive to be better and are hard markers of their own performance.

Lewis on the other hand applauds himself when he gets the worst figures in history. Disappointing, and very unaustralian. Lets get someone in there who a) has talent; and b) hurts a little when they let the side down.

You dont think Lewis was hurting? Did you even watch the game

The thing is you expect people to hurt at the time, when they are still bitching about it 6 months later you know they have a problem.

A one dayer especially should never affect anyone for more than a day or 2

I would prefer someone who can put it behind them than cry about it afterwards, it hurt at the time now is the time to focus on bigger things

Agreed about the ODI, but Lewis is NOT a hack. Would you say Stuart Clark is a hack because he got smacked off 6 overs in that match?

hack may be harsh - but he isnt up to international standard. Decent state player is all.

Stuart clark is almost as bad as lewis - one test performance on a green wicket doesnt show anything.
