After that VERY encouraging effort by the Catters in Adelaide :) :thumbsu: I got to wondering what the historical stats actually are on the pre-season comp being an indicator of 'real' season form.

I know Carlton last year were something of an aberration last year, but I'd be interested to know how often teams have managed to win the pre-season and then finish, say, top 4 in the real deal, or even win the lot. I seem to remember Essendon and Hawthorn managing the 'double' in my time, I wonder how many there have been to manage that?

NOT getting carried away here - I think Sydney didn't win a single game pre-season last year. In fact that makes it interesting I guess - last year the Premiers lost every pre-season game and the wooden-spooners won the pre-season comp!?!?!

Regardless, Go Catters 2006!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pre season GF results, with real ladder positions and eventual premiers
2000 - Essendon def Kangaroos (Ess finished 1st, Roos finished 4th, Essendon Premiers)
2001 - Port def Brisbane (Port finished 3rd, Bris finished 2nd, Brisbane Premiers)
2002 - Port def Richmond (Port finished 1rd, Rich finished 14th, Brisbane Premiers)
2003 - Adelaide Def Collingwood (Adelaide finished 6th, Pies finished 2nd, Brisbane Premiers)
2004 - Saints Def Geelong :( (Saints finished 3rd, Geelong finished 4th, Port Premiers)
2005 - Carlton Def WC (Carlton finished 16th, WC finished 2nd, Swans Premiers)

So, from all that I think you can say that while the lower teams will generally try in the pre season, it's a decent indicator of a reasonable performance forthcoming in the real season.

We're a very good top 4 chance, and if we can snare a top 2 spot, this could be our year, but at the moment, we are just one of a few contenders for the real thing.
