So where is Neil best suited? Where was his best work?

I have heard Split Enz, Crowded House, and his solo stuff, and all are brilliant. Crowded House stands out to me, but I'm interested what you guys think.

Discuss.

Crowded House for mine, closely followed by Split Enz

I think he's brilliant all-round, but yeah I think he was at his total best in Crowded House. Absolutely great stuff.

I like his Split Enz material best.

perfectly crafted pop songs. His later material is too self-concious and serious for my liking.

Can't split 'em. If you take some of his best work from any era, the songs rack up pretty well against each other.

My quintessential Neil Finn album would include a bit of everything, as follows (including some stuff he did with Tim on their own project):

What's the matter with you (Enz)
Kare Kare (House)
The devil you know (Enz)
Turn and run (Solo)
Distant sun (House)
Sinner (Solo)
Message to my girl (Enz)
Into temptation (House)
Our day (Enz)
Wherever you are (Solo)
Give it a whirl (Enz)
Never be the same (House)
Last day in June (Finn)
Walking on the spot (House)
Where is my soul (Finn)
Together alone (House)

Loathed to leave a lot more out, but 16 tracks is about all I can fit on a disk. For those looking to expand their Neil catalogue, check out 'Other Enz', a 2CD compilation of the various projects conducted by former Enz members. It includes Neil's Youth Yindi collaboration, some stuff that House did with Roger McGuinn of The Byrds, and some other Finn project material. Also contains plenty of Tim gems (like a demo of the Tim written 'They won't let my girlfriend talk to me', which was given to, and became a hit for Jimmy & The Boys).

Also, the two Andrew Denton Musical Challenge CDs feature Neil - performing Billy Jean and Sexual Healing. These are a must! (beginning to sound like Molly incarnate, better do you all a favour and p*ss off :D )

They are both good versions by Null Funn.

His Crowded House stuff was the best.

While they were all brilliant, I'd have to say Crowded House, because the songs are so singable, and I'm yet to meet a person who refuses to listen to them, and can't sing a long to at least a few of their songs.

If and when he wrote Don't dream it's over. Crowded House I presume.
