View Full Version : Would you like it if the AFL Grand Final wasn't at the MCG?
Personally I think the GF should always be played at the MCG.
It's the best sporting stadium in Australia, maybe the world and has an amazing atmosphere.
I think it should always be played there :thumbsu:
While I love AAMI Stadium and other people would love Subi etc etc, we all have to admit that playing a GF there wouldnt feel right...you with me?
All other finals should go to the highest teams home ground - whether there's enough in any bank or not - but keep the Grand Final at the MCG.
For non-Victorian fans there's great satisfaction seeing yet another premiership won by non-Victorian sides in the so-called home of football's state. Seven out of nine premierships outside Victoria since 6 non-Vic. teams - we'll keep enjoying seeing Victorians not take the ultimate flag, as long as they stubbornly stick to having 10 clubs there. :D
If ever the day comes when each state has its own huge stadium, then I'd like to see the AFL GF get handed around from capital city to capital city, like the Superbowl. Also helps promote the game and brings in revenue and tourist dollars.

I'd be pretty disgusted if the AFL ever proposed playing the Grand Final away from the MCG, or even the Grand Final at night. You can't meddle with a tradition of that nature.

If Essendon don`t win it, I couldn`t give a stuff if it kept going interstate. And as for moving the actual g.f ?!?!? From The G ?!?!? The HOME of Football ? Never going to happen.

Maybe when all cities have a 80,000 capacity (at least) stadium...maybe.
But that won't happen for another 100 years.:D

Yeah it has to stay at the 'G, no other ground currently comes close. Especially after all the new developments that have taken place for the commonwealth games

Maybe not 100, but it will be a long time, for sure.
Still, despite the attachment with the MCG, and as the AFL broadens in 20-50 years with teams in almost every major city, the lessening of Vic teams from 10 to (say) 5, and an overall increased Australian population in the smaller capital cities....I don't think it's impossible to imagine the GF being played outside the MCG on a regular rotational basis once those states have stadiums able to seat 80,000+ people.
By then, given all those things happening, it would also not be so "shocking" or "shameful" having the GF being played outside the G.
Time is the key though, and until then the G will factor in years and years of GFs.

I'm all for genuine home prelim and semi finals, but moving the Grand Final is something else entirely. Having it at the 'G is not really a huge advantage to any team, as the team that can handle the atmosphere and the changed environment of Grand Final day usually wins, and not necessarily the Melbourne based "home" team.

As great as the MCG is, the Grand Final should be held at the team's ground with the better record in the H&A season.
Ie- 2005 GF shoulda been played at Subi. 2004 GF shoulda been played at AAMI, etc etc.
Home ground advantage. Majority of other sports around the world played the grand finals at the home ground of the team who finished with a better regular season record.
After being to ym first grand final last year i can safely say KEEP IT AT THE G!
