I read about this in "The Age" today about John Walker Lindh, the american who was captured in the nothern Afghanistan city of Kunduz (sorry if i've misspelt it).
When I heard about this, I thought that it would've been somebody of middle eastern desent, but I was sure was shocked that the person they found was a 20 year old white guy from California, that's the last thing I was expecting (served me right in jumping to conclusions).
The question that I want to say to you is, what should the US do to him considering that he is an american citizen and also what can they carge him on ?.

The US will not be able to charge him on treason. According to US law, there must be TWO witnesses to an act of treason and I don't think his Taliban mates will be testifying against him anytime soon.
It seems that Lindh was acting as a soldier for al-Quida, so the US might send him to one of the military tribunials. Besides that, the US might find it difficult to charge him on any other grounds.
Reports have also said that there may be a further 4 US citizens that have been fighting with al-Quida/the Taliban.
IMO this bloke is going pay some minor penalty if any at all. He will then write a book ,and appear on Oprah, telling his story including how he was brainwashed by Osama & Co and how he found redemption back in the good ol' US of A. Having made his millions he will retire into obscurity.

I was actually thinking along those same lines, RacerX. I thought that Oprah would be salivating like Pavlov's dog, to get the chance to interveiw this guy, but as for this question. It would be hard, like Shinboners said to get the charge of treason to stick because they would have to get undeniable evidence against him, but this will all blow over very quickly after he's made his squillions selling his story to some sleazy supermarket tabloid.

Well, it appears we have one of our own as well :( A certain David Hicks from Adelaide was caught, and CAN be charged with treason. Deserves it too, traitor!

Just read that it is highly likely Hicks will recieve the death penalty if found guilty. I say lock him up and throw away the key...

I think these guys should be treated like any other Taliban prisoner. They shouldn't ever be allowed back into their respective countries of origin. If they stay over in their newly acquired homelands, I say no harm done. Good riddance.
I do have a sneaking suspicion that RacerX may be closer to the mark as far as what will happen.
Peace, Mooster
And to think people were worried that refugees coming to Australia could be terrorists.

Actually Mooster, while I think that John Walker bloke will probably not be punished too harshly it looks like the aussie bloke will not be so lucky. He was an active member of the Al Quaeda, unlike Walker who seemed to have just joined the Taliban. A quick read of theage.com forum gave a good indication of the level of feeling against him. "Hangings too good for him", was the sort of thing people were posting.

I've often stated that Adelaide is uninteresting.. but it surely isn't THAT boring that you have to join the Taliban for some excitement! :D

Well I don't think our government won't be trying too hard in getting him (David Hicks) home that's for sure, I doubt that he will face the charge of being a mercenary in a foreign country which if convicted and found guilty of that charge allows him to be free in 14 years in Australia.
He is no doubt going to be tried in a millitary (Kangaroo) court, where we'll definately know what's going to happen (where we couldn't care less if this ****er dies or not, with the exception of AlfAndrews)
Wait a minute, Alf hasn't posted here for a while, maybe he's in the Tora Bora mountains as we speak;)
Great. I posted my thread before reading this one. I thought it was dedicated solely to John Walker Lindh. When will I ever learn that BigFooty threads rarely stick with the same topic?
