Hey Guys,

A question has just been bugging me not sure if anyone actually has asked it. A preliminary search or the forums didn't come up with anything thats helpful.

My question is what happens if a club has two father/son selections in the one draft. They would use their 3rd round draft pick for the first choice but what would do they for the second father/son, would they give up a 2nd round draft pick? or would they try and trade for another 3rd round draft pick or can they only just pick up on f/s.

Was just pondering that because its not concievable that a footballer could have have twins or two footballers having sons the same age.

Another question just popped into my head. What happens if a footballer has an illigitimate son or an adopted child. What happens then?

Cheers guys.

Thanks for the help

* A club would have to use a 2nd & a 3rd round pick to get 2 father/son selections in the same draft.

Carlton potentially are in this position in the next draft with Jonston & Sheldon both available as an example.

* I'm sure if the son is "legally" that of a qualified player, then they would be availabe for selection by the appropriate club.

Cheers,

So if they traded a player and got a 3rd round pick could they use that for a f/s or would they have to use the 2nd.

Just curious thats all

Thanks in advance

No, Shifty Sheedy tried to use a late third round pick acquired in a trade but the AFL knocked them back.

Yep - I remember listening to all of those Essendon fans proclaiming that Sheedy was a genius, and that they'd be using pick #51... Didn't happen though.

Illigitimate son is fine. If the father is the father then that is all that counts. Probably a few examples of father-son selections where dad has actually taken off.

I don't know the nitty-gritty of the family but Tom Kavanagh (son of Brent Crosswell) was father-sonned by Melbourne.

The adoption won will be the interesting one if it ever comes up. I suppose the league will decide on a case by case basis.

The one example I do remember was another Sheedy attempt at being clever. Richard Cole's parents are in the NT. When he moved to Melbourne Beverley Knight (Essendon board member and dealer in Aboriginal Art) became his guardian. They tried to recruit him father-son because under the rules then certain long-serving officials qualified their kids, not just players. The league told them where to stick that little scheme.

Thanks alot Weaver! :) You just reminded me of the fact Simon Fletcher somehow managed to play 84 games for Carlton. :( He was recruited to Geelong under the FS because his dad was an administrator at Geelong. I hope the Crows don't read this! :p
