He’s successful and down-to-earth, has brought joy to millions of Australians, and even sports a mullet.
Now, the intriguing character of Tony Santic has been indelibly linked to the Port Adelaide Football Club.
Santic, a tuna fisherman from Port Lincoln, was announced as the club’s joint No. 1 ticket holder at last night’s 2006 Season Launch Dinner. He shares the position with club legend Bob Quinn and will replace champion cyclist Stuart O’Grady in the role.
Santic is best known as the owner of Makybe Diva. He plucked her from obscurity and she went on to become a national icon.
Power chief executive John James said Santic’s appointment was a “perfect match”.
“Tony is incredibly successful, a survivor, and a genuine man who has never forgotten his roots. These are the sorts of qualities that are particularly admired at the Port Adelaide Football Club,” James said.
“Not only is Tony all of these things but he is a passionate Port Adelaide supporter so his appointment as No. 1 ticket holder is a great fit for our club.
“We thank Stuart O’Grady for holding one of the No. 1 tickets for the past four years and know our strong ties with Stuart will continue with a new role as a World Ambassador of our club.”
The Power’s relationship with Santic has already been strong.
Last year, Santic donated a highly-rated horse with terrific breeding to the club which raised around $250,000 for the club’s Foundation. Carnegie Power has recently started her racing career under the tutelage of Byron Cozamanis in South Australia.
His generosity was particularly evident the night that Carnegie Power was auctioned. Santic bought a lease share in Carnegie Power, along with Makybe Diva memorabilia, all of which he had earlier donated to the club.
Santic made headlines last year for purchasing the tie Port Adelaide coach Mark Williams wore and so famously loosened on Grand Final day in 2004. The tie cost Santic $26,000 at auction.
Santic said he was honoured to accept the position.
“I think it’s (being appointed no.1 ticketholder) great, really fantastic. And I think the boys will do a great job this year and we will get behind them and help them along as much as we can,” Santic said.
Tony is married to Christine, also a passionate Power fan, and together they have five children. He will join the club at games and events whenever possible.
The club also today named four World Ambassadors for the first time. Joining O’Grady are tennis coaches Darren Cahill (Andre Agassi) and Roger Rasheed (Lleyton Hewitt), businessman Robert de Crespigny, and Australia’s Agent General in the UK, Maurice de Rohan. All five spend significant periods beyond Australia’s shores.
Port Adelaide’s Patrons in 2006 are still Allan Scott OAM and Sir Eric Neale AC, CVO.
Former Port Adelaide and Geelong champion and current media personality Dwayne Russell will hold the position of No. 1 ticket holder in Victoria in 2006.
