View Full Version : Hypothetical - Magpies vs Power

I was thinking today....how would the Magpies side from the trial just played go against the Power side if they played today ? ie take W, W & W from the Power, stick 'em in the Maggies and let them at it.
On first glance the Power would dominate....but I think the Magpies side with Wilbur, Wakes and Gavin would be harder at the ball than the Power (particularly with Clayton running around as well). Unfrotunately I am not up to date with who is who for the Magpies to put a side together but a side with:
Gavin, Wakes, Wilbur, Poults, Clayton, Waterhouse, Stevens (?) would give it a shake. A bit slow on the legs perhaps.
You could take it one step further and allow the Magpies access to players with a Port background and the Power forms a side from the balance. This would give the Magpies (and rob the Power) of:
Gavin, Wilbur, Wakes, Snr & Jnr Burgoyne, Tredders, Ebert.
Actually I would back the magpies

Power would win due to Choco's style being pretty much engineered to beat the Magpies style. Ironic, I know.

How about Macca if you also took Tredders, Ebert and the Burgoynes from the Power ?

thanks....interesting. I have always thought that there is not a lot different between the last few guys picked in an AFL side and a "normal" SANFL player. I know a computer generated result is not emphatic by any means (and of course the Power side listed would not be really competitive in the AFL but it still "feels" like an AFL side. I still think there are a number of Mahoney's out there who could fit in well in an AFL side with the right people around them (Clayton, Gowans boys etc).

I reckon that Magpies side would beat that Power side. All would depend on Thurstans and White and how they fire. Baird could take Thurstans completely out of the game whilst Wakelin and AhChee would take Lade and White. Arch has done well on White before.
Power would easily win the ruck but having P and S Burgoyne around the ball, I reckon the Magpies may get on top...especially with Jezza in the middle too.
Powers defence with three younguns against the likes of Tredrea, Waterhouse, Lokan and Morrison would be interesting. Id expect Chaplin to play on Tredrea with Chad dropping in front as he does. Could leave one of the others open.
Hmm, another interesting one would be what's the best side (or at least part of a side given the numbers) that could be put together with players who played for the PAFC (not purely PAMFC players) when we were the Magpies still (including U19's and reserves). We could add the likes of McLeod, Pickett, Buckley, Shane Wakelin from the AFL. Waterhouse and Poults from the current PAMFC side. And of course Wanganeen, D. Wakelin, Wilson, Tredrea, P. Burgoyne. Any others of the 'old guard' still running around in the AFL I've missed ?

HF : Tredrea
C : Pickett McLeod
HB : Wilson
FB : S.Wakelin D. Wakelin Poulton

Not a lot of ex-PAFC Magpies players running around still. The rest of the AFL - and probably even a lot of PAFC supporters - won't notice it, but when the last one hangs up his boots it'll be the final nail in the end of an era, which I'll find a bit sad, even if no one else does.
