View Full Version : Kallis says Hayden is no cheat
But it's interesting to note some newspapers report that replays showed the ball bounced before he caught it..
'Hayden's not the type to cheat' - Kallis

Jacques Kallis and Adam Gilchrist stood by Matthew Hayden and refused to accuse him of cheating after Hayden had controversially claimed a catch to dismiss Jacques Rudolph during the opening day of the third Test at Johannesburg.
The moment came when South Africa had reached 4 for 161. Rudolph, on 25, flashed at Warne and the ball flew low to first slip where Hayden thrust his hands forward, held the ball, and came up with the appeal. The umpire Tony Hill was asked for clarification and after meeting with Steve Bucknor gave Rudolph out. The television replays could not confirm whether it was taken cleanly and boos ringed around the arena as Rudolph walked back to the pavilion.
Kallis, the stand-in captain, gave a clean chit to Hayden. "It's a tough one, we can only go on the evidence we saw on TV and you can't really say. You have to take Hayden's word on it. Jacques felt it was tight but it's difficult for him to say because it went fast. You tend to take the fielder's word on it; Hayden's not the type to cheat," Kallis told reporters.
Gilchrist also said he thought it was a clean catch: "At the time, I thought he'd [Hayden] got it and I haven't seen any replays. I believe there has only been one replay of it and it's a little bit inconclusive but Haydos's reaction was that he had it and my gut feeling at the time was that it was there. All we do then is just ask the question. It's like a caught behind or an lbw. Bucknor obviously confirmed that it was up so we can only take it on that value

Good on him. Good cricketer, good bloke it seems.
He dropped it, it was very easy to see WHEN REPLAYED. So I dont really blame the umps, I dont really blame Haydos as I believe he is a good bloke and if he knew he dropped it he would have said he would.

yes it didn't look like a clean catch yet hayden believed he did take it. its a tough issue, however if players are honest and walk when player says out we should go by that. good sports the south africans on that one.

The worry is that Hayden refused to take Hall's word for it and he seems a fair cricketer.

it's interesting to note that people had no problem with Ponting not taking Jaywardene's word for it in the 2nd Final of the VB series, saying how it clearly wasn't a catch.
Imagine the outcry if Ponting was given out in that final. funny how people are quiet about it now that the shoe is on the other foot.

People also had no problem with Hayden not taking the Saffies word earlier in the series
Personally I cant stand Hayden with his sneering look and the fact he likes to give out the verbals but didnt like it back when England gave him some .
Having said that it wasnt out but I dont think he cheated he thought he had caught it .
Lee should have taken Dippenaars word that did look out .

Hayden is dodgy and he looks an angry man most of the time these days. I worry about someone who makes the sign of the cross every time he makes a ton but won't take anyone's word for it that they caught it and then he claims a catch which look like it hit the ground. He's my least favourite Aussie.

Why should Ponting take his word?
Ponting was the initiator of the world cricketing captians to install the "Player Honour/Word" system but he was shot down by the other captians who didn't want to take the "word" of other players.
The other captians want umpires to make the adjudication and now they are doing that (and like every other area LBWs, Caugh Behinds) they are making mistakes everyone is bagging them.

I think though they actually wanted umpires with the aid of technology. The umpires don't seem to want to use the technology and keep making blunders. They should have consulted it in the case of both Hayden and Dippenaar.

Yes, they did want the aid of technology. My point though is everyone (Players and supporters) is arguing that they should be taking the players word.
Fine have a go at the ICC's or umpire's lack of using technology to judge on close catch decisions... but don't sit there (not you personally) having a go at Australian players (especially Ponting) for not taking the word of players. When they wanted to implement trusting a players word but were rejected and told to let the umpire decide (with or without technology).

Exactly, it's different if it's the other way around of course. The whinging wouldn't have ever ended had Ponting been given out. But an Aussie does the same thing and you see what happens. Those kind of actions are part of the Aussie cricketing culture though.
