View Full Version : Round 1 votes
One of those list the players backwards from worst on ground and whoever's left gets the votes.
5 - K. Cornes - Mainly for his first half. Like almost every team mate not much after half time
4 - S. Burgoyne - great early, forced into less then ideal match-ups later. MUST, repeat, MUST play midfield from next week.
3 - White - Didn't get many chances after half time, but when our midfield was actually getting it into our forward line presented well, held marks (YAH!) and made second efforts - the latter, the two shortcomings in earlier games.
2 - Walsh - great first half, didn't see much of later.
1 - Lade - kept trying, our only ruckman who did ok. Another case of, with Brogan, of the week after signing a new contract, playing like crap.
Honourable mentions - Chad - would be in the votes, except he dropped quite a few marks at important times he usually takes.
Junior player
None particularly impressive tonight. However here's the votes :
3 - Pearce - at least kept trying. And didn't go for the short option every time.
2 - Thomson - Kept trying. Great handball, but needs to learn a) to kick it sometimes and b) how to kick it properly
1 - Pettigrew - Gets the last vote, as Chaplin got spanked as the game went on.
Coaching - match-day - I have a feeling I'll be saying every week from now till end of season, but why wasn't Junior B. shifted into the midfield when it was being spanked ? Fix the cause (lack of ball won in centre), not the effect (ball in the backline requiring talented rebounder). And either Senior B. was playing down back, or Choco wasn't giving him a roast for letting his man drag him down there way too many times. Not too mention a general telling of the players to stop ********ing around from defense, taking 12 possessions (and chances for turnovers) to reach the half-forward, and go quick and direct like the Roos. The Roos aren't stacked with top quality KPP's, I would have backed our guys if we'd had the balls to back ourselves. I give him a 3 out of 10.
Umpiring - certainly not the cause of our defeat, though worth 2 -3 goals of the margin. Woeful. Sometimes the numbers do tell the story 31-16 in the Roos favour is a good indication of how one sided it was tonight. A 2 out of 10.

3. Peter Walsh (for first half really)
2. Damon
1. Lade
Really substandard games:
Chad - worst game I can remember him playing in over two years
Dew - worried about how his 2006 is shaping up already
Wangas - just not fit
Brogan - continually dropped marks, fumbled, gave away frees and tapped straight to their players
Young players
Pearce - by far the shining light. Should have been on for longer periods. Play him nearer the ball, because like JB he can break lines
Ebert - really pleased for Brett. Could see him working hard. Tackled better. Slow to move it on, but an improvement.
Chaplin - so hesitant and unreliable with ball use early. Not up to what I had hoped for. Hardly sighted after Halftime.
Pettigrew - did two or three poor things - especially the holding free on Harding. Does run it well though when he gets on the end of it.
Sal - really did very little. Seems to lack tricks.
Thomson - got hands on footy a fair bit and his handballs early hit their mark, but like his teammates he missed targets as the game wore on. One really poor short kick into our forward line in the second quarter, soon after he had found Damon with a nice pass minutes earlier.
White - liked his game. Better in the first half, but as Choco said post-match, that is because we were getting down to him faster and more precisely from clearances. His teammates refused to kick it to him in the third quarter. It was horrible to see him present time and time again to be ignored. It culminated in him dropping a costly sitter in the last quarter. Overall as good as one could have expected given the quality of supply and support.

Absolutely agree on the JB comment. Must play on ball - so obvious it ain't funny.
I can't understand how Chad could rate good mentions after that. We are all entitled to our opinions, but he couldn't take a trick. Virtually the whole supporter group around us identified his poor form as being a major reason we couldn't get into the game.
I have been thinking about who to give votes to and haven't made up my mind yet, but one thing is for sure and that is I cannot see myself giving Kane Cornes any votes.
I mean yes he did get 30+ possessions and a heap of marks, but I do not see him as one of the players that helped us nearly win the game before the blowout occurred. Possessions alone mean nothing.
Shaun Burgoyne has now played enough games to be consistent for 4 quarters. He wasn't.
Peter Burgoyne? Meh.
Walsh? Meh.
Chad? Double meh.
Players in the mix IMO are Lade, Wilbur, White, Motlop and Pearce. Even Thomo did bits and pieces of good.
Perhaps a no win no votes policy will apply this week.

I agree with PJ Power on his list of really substandard games but have a few to add:
Chad - Just ineffective
Dew - what the f*^k!
Wangas - if he wanted to retire he should have done so last year, not last night
Brogan - rubbish
Pettigrew - amateurish.
Salopek - what has happened to this kid's skills and confidence since late last year?
Young players not listed yet
Pearce - actually got better as the game went on, took another step though I don't know if he'll ever be able to kick from 50m when not on the run.
Ebert - played well, and well enough to be back against Sydney.
Chaplin - as per Salopek.
Thomson - with Ekermann, Lonie and Shattock keen for his spot he'd want to lift his game quick.

I wouldn't say minimal impact on the game, BUT a 30 possession game from Kane is like 20 from a Judd or Ruccuito. Not as damaging as could be.

Both points are valid IMO.
Kane does run hard though - that goal he kicked in the first was after he initiated that particular play by winning the ball on the HBF.
We miss that Stevens/Schofield (even Kingsley) runner and distributor. No one in our side runs to recevie at the moment. With so many handballs coming out, we seem to be begging for someone to receive and then run with the ball rather than receive and give off again straight away.
I also agree with comments about Chappy. Yes he showed courage in that last play that got him injured. But he was matched up on Jones for a short while in the third and like Bishop got beaten comprehensively by his man - mind you they were winning alot of unpressured ball in the midfield and their HF line by that stage.
Chappy also seems to suffer from thinking through his disposals too much. It's probably what makes him look so cool under pressure, but there were times in the first quarter where he was a major exponent of the hold up play and give off a backwards handball rather than move it forward.

Special mention to Pettigrew for taking a strong mark under pressure during our 4th quarter resurgence AND PLAYING ON. It didn't come off, but ******** it, its better than standing around like many others.

I want to give a vote to Motlop but can't squeeze him. If he puts the same effort into all his games then I think he'll be good for us.
Wharfie1870 - White isnt eligible for the Young Gun of the year. Can you please rearrange your votes.
I think maybe a little harsh on Kane this match. Last year I thought he struggled for impact in most games but was in the best players just through sheer weight of disposals and hard work. His disposals rarely hurt though.
Saturday though I thought he had much more impact on the match, especially early on.

1985 and youngerTa, I put him in because he is young and hasn't played many games but he misses out by a couple of years.
