FWIW.........the amount of crap Essendon have copped..........perhaps rightfully so after years finish.........its refreshing to celebrate a win against the Premiers of last season in the first round of a new year.

Early days yes but a very very optimistic outlook.

Drink up!

Round 1 and all of a sudden the reigning premiers are gone and bombers are the big dog in town now?

Sydney are slow starters and will get better as the season gets longer the question is can the bombers keep their form going?

Make no mistake about it bombers were the better side tonight but lets just wait and see before we go making big predictions now shall we.

As a warning to Essendon fans;

At the start of 2004, Peter Schwab came out and stated we would win the flag and had the team to do so. Our first game, against Melbourne, we dominated all parts of the ground and recorded an 8 goal win. Hawthorn fans everywhere were cheering, claiming we could win the flag and bragging about our win. We had a dream fixture, one that would have Hawthorn fans expecting a top 4 finish. However, as fate would have it, we went down hill and finished 15th.

At the start of 2006, Kevin Sheedy has stated Essendon has the team to win the flag. Their first match, an emphatic victory over the Swans, has their fans in raptures. The belief, amongst supporters of the Bombers, is they can win the flag. Essendon, like Hawthorn in 2004, have a dream fixture, one which fans would expect a return of at least 14 wins.

In many ways, these two scenarios are parrallels of each other. On both occasions supporters of their respective teams have felt they can, and will go close, to winning the flag. However, most media commentators, bar a few, tipped both sides to finish in the lower quarter of the ladder. Don't think anything is certain because of one game. If we did, the Bulldogs would be a shoo-in for the flag and Richmond and Brisbane will fight it out for the spoon.

My good friend and Bomber fan Hugh turns up late at a dinner at the Kennel (I live in Sydney). I have painstakingly spent the evening quietly urging my guests to go for for the Dogs (Sydney folk).

its all good mate theres quite a big difference in the fact that our coach is one kevin sheedy and not Schhhwabby :thumbsu: nobody is thinking premierships its just nice to get off to a good start to the season. we havnt done so for 4 years. lloydy seems so focused and fired up, spoke really well after the match dont you think?

At the start of 2006, Kevin Sheedy has stated Essendon has the team to win the flag.

Would you care to prove that?

Sheedy has said two things about our prospects this season. He's said he sees us like a lot of the scribes see us, hard to place and we could finish anywhere between 4 and 12.

He also said we now have some depth on our list, something we haven't had any of since 2001.

That's a pretty honest reflection, no talks of Premierships.

Everyone loves Round 1 champions.

I would be worried if i was were you bomber fans. Your team cramping up and slowing down in the last qrt will allow other teams to finish you off. And its only Round 1.

Fitness is an issue and teams like the bulldogs will blow you out of the water. Let me book mark this thread btw.

Thank you for your common sense post. Essendon thoroughly deserved their win last night and there will be more this season. Your tackling was fierce and pressure immense. A well deserved win, however, there is a looooong way to go in 2006.

We won the last quarter turbo.

We had three blokes cramp up. Two of those had their biggest workload in AFL footy. Slattery played his first full game and Watson had his first real crack in the midfield (Lovett was the other one). The reason they cramped up is because it was round 1. They'll be better and more match fit for the run.

Umm you had the same problem last year in your last qrts. You clearly are not fit as you would like to be this time of the year. If its only the first round why are teams like the bulldogs and the cats firing?

Had it been anohter side rather than Sydney you would have squandered your lead in the last qrt. The swans are clearly underdone and the yes the bombers were hard at the ball and credit where credit is due.

Anyway its a bit too early to be writing teams off and announcing who will be premiers this year. The real test comes after the split round IMHO. Thats when the cream rises to the top and dud teams fade out.

A long way too go yet.

Longy413

Our last quarters were alright last year. It was 2003-2004 when we have the massive problem.

It was kids than cramped up last night. I don't have a problem with that, kids do that. Our senior players ran the game out well.

And just a disclaimer....I'm having nothing to do with this talk of Premierships. I'm happy to get a first up win against a quality opponent. We won three of the four quarters and there were many more positives than negatives. We'll be better for the run.
