Port Adelaide has lost its opening match of the season to the Kangaroos by 41 points in front of a poor crowd of 27,680.
After kicking 5 of the first 6 goals of the match, the Kangaroos kicked 9 of the next 12 goals to put themselves in front and led by 22 points at the final charge. Despite an early charge from Port Adelaide, the Kangaroos kicked the last 4 goals to finish off the match and extend the margin to its final 41 points.
Port Adelaide started the match on fire with 5 goals in the opening 15 minutes of play. As is usually the case, Ports new recruit Daniel Motlop opened the scoring against his old club with a great goal from the goalsquare, turning his opponent inside out. Brendon Lade kicked the next two goals before Brady Rawlings opened the scoring for the Roos. After Kane Cornes and Damon White kicked Port Adelaide four goals clear, the Roos kicked the last two goals of the quarter through Brown and Archer.
Ports senior players led from the front in the first quarter, with Kane Cornes, Shaun Burgoyne and Peter Walsh having 29 disposals between them at quarter time. First gamer Chad Gibson was strong in defence for the Kangaroos with 8 opening quarter disposals. Daniel Harris made an impact when he came on the field as well.
Damon White kicked his second goal to open the scoring in the second quarter after a fantastic give by 300 gamer Gavin Wanganeen. Daniel Wells - who was being touched up by Kane Cornes - replied with two goals in a minute to put the Roos right back into the contest. The Kangaroos added three more goals to Port Adelaides two for the rest of the quarter and went into the main break a point in front.
The third quarter saw the Kangaroos take control of the contest, kicking 6 goals to 3 and using the ball a lot better than their opponents. Wells kicked two succesive goals for the second time to push the margin out to two goals before Brett Ebert - playing more up field than usual - marked and goaled. White kicked his third goal from a tough angle before the Kangaroos ran away kicking four goals in a row. Danyle Pearce marked and goaled before the three quarter time siren to cut the margin back to 22 points at the last change.
The Kangaroos had taken control thanks to some hard work by key players Daniel Harris, Adam Simpson and Glen Archer, whilst half forwards Corey Jones and Cam Thurley - playing his first game for the club - started to influence. The Power, who had been slow and steady in the first half started to overuse the ball a bit more and it came unstuck, struggling to get the ball out of the Kangaroos forward half of the ground.
After Shannon Grant kicked the Kangaroos 28 points clear early in the last quarter, Port hit back with a goal from Shaun Burgoyne, then a superb team goal which ended in Danyle Pearce kicking his first for the match. After wasting a couple of other oppurtunities to peg back the margin further, the Kangaroos ran away with the match with 4 late goals.
The match ended with some pushing and shoving, with Port players getting sucked in thanks to some match long dubious calls from the umpires. The match was over-umpired, with 10 goals being kicked from free kicks.
The Kangaroos key players ended up winning the match for the Roos. Harris, Simpson, Wells, Harvey and Corey Jones all had a strong influence on the result, whilst youngsters Chad Gibson and Hamish McIntosh showed they have a future at AFL level.
Kane Cornes and Shaun Burgoyne were the Powers best, picking up 64 disposals, 19 marks and 2 goals between them. Brendon Lade was strong across the ground whilst Damon White took his chances up forward, kicking three goals before dislocating his thumb in the last quarter.

Opinion
Well a disspaointing start to the season, especially given it was Gavs 300th match. Especially dissapointed with the finish to the match.
One thing I noticed was the change of gameplan, basically to a reworked 2005 model. Short kicks out of defence out to the flanks before trying to move back into the middle and then quicker movement into the forward line. It worked fairly well for a while but some poor skills forced it unstuck. The last half saw the return of the pre season handballs for a while but mostly it was a similar gameplan to last year. Im not too sure what I think about this. I dont know why if we are going to play in that way why we wasted 3 pre season matches far overusing the handball.
The younger guys got a fair amount of time, and most of them did reasonable. Salopek and Pearce I was dissapointed in, although Pearce had a strong last quarter.
Too many players turned the ball over too often. 58 clangers is a ridiculously high amount of turnovers to have in a match. Chad and Peter were the main culprits. If Chad is to be the power midfielder we are hoping then he really needs to get his kicking into shape as too many times he kicked it straight to the opposition. Peter was worse. Bishop was touched up by Thurley. Motlop was mainly ineffective.
The umpiring will be a talking point. 31 frees to 15. We cant complain too much as we got 4 goals from free kicks (Kangaroos got 6). It was the frees in the middle that killed us. Too much inconsistency between decisions though.
We need another key forward in the side next week. Lade was alright but we need a third tall taget. Thurstans probably has to come in and help out, althought I wouldnt mind if Willits got a go. At least he is a target to hit at and is strong enough to hold his own.
In the end it was dissapointing to let them kick away in the last few minutes and give away a number of frees. There were some reasonable signs for a while but overall we lack a lot of polish and there are too many turnovers at this point.
Player Reviews
Bishop - Had his moments but was beaten by Thurley in the end. Didnt give much run out of defence either.
Brogan - Led the ruck well. His taps got sharked a bit but he took some very courageous marks backing back in defence. A good return to the no.1 ruck.
P Burgoyne - Terrible is probably the only word you could use to describe his game. Gave away 4 free kicks and turned the ball over too many times.
S Burgoyne - Was outstanding in the first half coming out of defence. Spent some time in the middle. Kicked a goal and set up a lot of play. He basically has to be the go to man coming out of defence as he pretty much always gets away and always uses it well. Hope to see a lot more of that this year
Cassisi - Dont know about his game. Started off slowly but had some important touches in the second half. Had to do more with his touches.
Chaplin - I thought was having a top game mainly on Petrie before concussing himself flying for a mark.
C Cornes - Played all over the ground. Cant afford to simply burn the ball like he did. Its good that he wins the ball and gets it forward but too often it either went straight to an opponent or in an outnumbered contest.
K Cornes - Great game. Seemed to play behind centre in the first half and did the job on Wells for a while. Was everywhere last night. Much better use of the ball than last year as well.
Dew - Barely noticed him out there for most of the match. Poor.
Ebert - Played a bit further up the ground. Did alright I thought. Used the ball well and kicked 2 goals. More of taht would be good.
Lade - Strong. Kicked two early, took some good marks and did ok in the ruck. A good game
Mahoney - Quiet at times but his last half was excellent.
Motlop - Poor. Kicked the first goal but pretty much didnt get a kick for two quarters after that. Gotta do better than that
Pearce - Not seen in the first half. Was lightning in the second half although his disposal was shonky on a few occasions. Got us going in that last quarter
Pettgrew - Nothing game really.
Salopek - Didnt get much of a go in the first half, but when on the field in the second half he had a few fine touches. Dont know why he was only on the field for 50% of the match though
Thomson - He won the ball and was tough around the stoppages, but his disposal is about a second too slow at the moment. Gets tackled or caught just as he is about to handball. Showed some good signs though.
Wakelin - Kept Thompson in check for most of the match. Played pretty well.
Walsh - Excellent first half. Hardly seen after half time though.
Wanganeen - Quiet mainly on a wing. Didnt get a lot of the ball.
White - Good game. Showed some good signs. Marked strongly, kicked truly. More of taht please.
Wilson - Was outstanding early but barely got a touch in the second half.
