Spot on buster - apparently the Tigers have told him to nominate for the draft. He certainly has the skills and physical attributes to give it a good shot - only problem being if he really wants to do it!!
Other news at Maffra includes:
the re signing of Nik Hider after approaches from NGFL clubs offering coaching roles.
A. Burgiel re signing.
the return of the Staley brothers from Yarram - possibly bringing another player with them.
the return of Ben Coleman from o/s - a very handy pick up being a 4 time premiership player.
chasing Stevens from Heyfield very hard.

On the down side apparently Winnie Gieschen has signed with Boisdale to play with his brother.

justin staley dobbed 6 in the Alberton GF, yeah?

That could be correct - he rarely went foward at Maffra, played CHB most of the time. Straight ahead, strong attacking player. Great record - 4 grand finals, three premierships, 64 games. Very keen to play 100 with the club.

bigpapagman

what about his bro?

I would say so - it looks like his form hasn't slipped much and he is still pretty young (maybe 26 or 27).

His brother was never a regular in the seniors at Maffra only playing a handful of games but a very handy reserves player - played in the 2004 reserves premiership. He may have improved.

His name is Clint. Yes, he plays for Yarram.

With regard to the Maffra CHF being asked by Richmond to nominate for the draft i checked the list of nominations on the AFL site and he has indeed nominated. Apparently one of 10 players training at the club trying to get on the rookie list.

No, he is a Heyfield boy originally and was playing for Sale City in the NGFL, (and apparently not going that well) until he came across to Maffra midway through the 2006 season. Went straight into the seniors and hasn't looked back - played in back to back premierships.

Hey Guys,

Was wondering if you had heard of a bloke who was involved at Drouin Football Club. His name is Rick Irwin. Just want to know what sort of position he has there and if he in fact coached them at any stage over the years. Thanks

Yeah im pretty sure he does have a son named Jackson.

Can you tell me if he coached at Drouin at all.

lucifer1
21 Nov 2007, 16:13
yes Rick Irwin is Jacksons old man. Played at Drouin all his career but had dodgy knees so had to give it away prematurely. He coached Drouin for one year only in 1996 then headed down Melbourne way to be involved with a TAC Cup side, i think it was Oakleigh Chargers. See him occasionly and i believe he is still involved there. Top fella too.

Ok got that slightly wrong. The "swap deal" did not work out too well for Sale City with Milham returning to Maffra in 2007 and playing in another premiership!

Buster the hawk
25 Nov 2007, 20:08
Talk about rat$hit decisions ,apparently City were paying him (Milham) around $300-$400 a game which is a lot of money for a North Gippy club.

bigpapagman
26 Nov 2007, 07:06
not much coin in that league?

chaddles
26 Nov 2007, 12:24
There is a bit of coin around North Gippy- obviously not like West Gippy. Heyfield, Churchill and Cowarr have a fair bit to throw around, Rosedale rely on the wealth of talent that has come through their under 18's and then top up with some paid players.

bigpapagman
26 Nov 2007, 12:33
has anyone got any news on people moving around in the WGFL?

Buster the hawk
27 Nov 2007, 19:54
not much coin in that league?
You're from down Warragul way right?Be interested to know what the better paid players would get in the minor leagues (EDFL) down there.Sale City probably are a bad example because being the secondary club in town playing in the minor league ,they are probably not as well supported as some of the other clubs representing a whole town like Heyfield or Churchill and as such don't have as much money to pay players like them .Heyfield have consistently been able to entice players from the West Gippy Latrobe still considered to be in their prime which probably explains why they continue to be strong. That's not to say that they don't have many locals but they always seem to have 2or3 imports of high quality in their team.

bigpapagman
28 Nov 2007, 07:11
the very best players in our league/imports, would be getting close to $500-$600 a game.

having said that though, it has been rumoured some players are on $1000 plus.

cough......donaldson......cough.

lucifer1
28 Nov 2007, 08:49
there would only be a couple. the only bloke i know, besides coaches, that was getting $500 - $600 a game was Peters from Buln. However, i've heard from a guy who frequented nilma Darnum quite a bit that some of the overpaid imports that they had were in that vicinity.

Donaldson may have been getting about that too, but the $1000 dollar business only come about because of those scabs from Cora Lynn going crazy to get whoever they want. Noone's worth a grand a game, unless your straight out of League Footy.

bigpapagman
28 Nov 2007, 09:03
or can kick 15 consistently, which he will next year, and cora lynn are probs gonna win the flag. although it would be intersting to see him and baskaya in the same forward line, as they are both "kick it only to me" type of people. both big fish.

B.Dixon and J.Smith are apparently over the line there. Which will add to their former AFL players: M.Baldwin, A.Murray, N.Ries, B.Rose, S. Cranage, B Moyle, D. Harford, A.Morgan adn B. Smith, but the thing that balwyn have got issues with is their depth. They finished fourth last year, losing 6 of 7 games and just getting over the line by a kick in the Elimination final over Lilydale (Adrian Cox's old side). Like in most decent standards of footy, it's not your top six that wins you games of footy, but your bottom six.

bigpapagman
6 Dec 2007, 12:48
thats right. the top 6 in most sides are comparable.

but if your bottom 6 are players who shouldnt be getting a game, then you have no chance.

Adrian was originally from Traralgon where he played at CHF in a premiership in '87 as a 17 y.o. Then went to Footscray where he was given the prestigious no. 3 jumper. was the clubs leading goalkicker in '89 before what people who saw it describe as the most horriffic knee injury ever in a reserves grand final against Nth Melb in '91 at Waverley. to his credit he went on and played a further 8 games at Foots and Melb. went to Leongatha after that and won flags with them in '95, '97 and '01. Kicked over 100 a couple of times there and represented Vic country at least once.

Went to training tonight at Leongatha and they seem like a great bunch of blokes. just learning names so cannot fill you in who was there but had around 22 players there but they have a average of around 30 at training. Spoke to the coach and they have around 8 coming in from Melbourne to play and are very happy with there recruiting this year. They expect to be rising up the ladder and playing finals in 08. Also got some news from a guy I work with in regards to Traralgon and he said they will continue to slide down the ladder as they are losing a further 4-6 players from last year senior team so not sure if blokes are unhappy or what the go is. But one thing I no is I am stuffed from the 4km time trial and Leongatha are looking very fit this year and are concerating on weights and stamina as they felt last year they were knocked around to much. But they have a fantastic coach and he is well respected by all the players.
