sale 3rds played sale city 3rds and pumped them thats all i know
Moe beat Morwell yesterday
Wonthaggi beat Morwell a few weeks back
Wonthaggi beat Moe by 5 weeks a few weeks back.
Morwell and Moe have yet to field a full strength team in any practice match from what I hear. Morwell's numbers VERY strong, with a lot of guys missing out on a game entirely

Any info on how Sale are travelling?
From what ive heard they are looking good. They have gotten back Shubach from Adelaide Crows and the new coach is liked by players and commitee members alike. Big year for the Magpies i think.

Anyone got a score from Maffra v Sale played today

Apparently in the 1st Qtr the Scores where Sale 75 to Maffra 5 points, and i think sale ended up giving them a major thrashing, can't confirm it though

Hey stafford that would be a major turnaround from last few years.
Has the change of coaches made such a difference?

Im not too sure , maffra has lost a lot of players probably around 14 or more that have played in the Seniors over the past few years and Sale have gained some good players
Apparently in the 1st Qtr the Scores where Sale 75 to Maffra 5 points, and i think sale ended up giving them a major thrashing, can't confirm it though
Nah not quite ... Sale started well in the battle of the birds and held an impressive 7-8 goal lead at qtr time.
Maffra on the other hand were struggling to hit targets and generate run out of defense - with Burgiel being heavily tagged at stages by Sale's Chris Laverty which made for interesting viewing.
At one stage in the opening Qtr the ball bounced between Stuart Anderson and Burgiel and almost resulted in Burgs being knocked into next week, but he managed to gather the ball and avoid a freight-train-like Anderson who had one intention (and it wasnt the footy)
Coleman was finding plenty of possessions for Maffra, and would have finished well in the 30's. However the midfield run in the first half was dominated by the Magpies - with Schuback, Anderson and a young VFL listed Damon "The A factor" Arrezzolo (who started on the bench) finding plenty of the football.
Just before half time Arrezzolo provided some magic in front of the grand stand - receiving a handball from Schuback just forward of the wing - taking off with his opponent hot on his hammer - casually taking 2 bounces and slotting the goal of the day towards the SportsTAB end of the ground from around 35-40 hard up on the boundary.
With the crowd on the tip of his finger - Arrrrrrrrreeeezzzzooolo proceeded to slot another 2 majors to finish out the game among Sale's best - finishing with 3 goals and around 15 possessions.
However as the game drew closer to an end, the run of Schuback, Ando and Rusty seemed to dissappear, as the Maffra outfit crept back to within 2 goals with a minute to go. Dougy Bates recovered well from a heavy hit from a fired up Anderson in the 3rd term, and prooved to be a vital factor in Maffra's resurgence.
But it wasn't enough, and the earlier assumed "thrashing" was actually a 12 point win to Sale!
Sale best: Schuback, T Bristow, Hughes, Arrezzolo, Anderson, Laverty
Maffra best: Coleman, Burgiel, Bates

The first quater was unbelievable. THere was a hush over the crowd because i dont think it seemed real after 6 years since Sales last win against the Eagles.
A great win to a much sharper and stronger Sale team than previous years. Maffra is a team full of meat heads and i wish burgiel ( and his gay brother) did get knocked out. Well done Sale!

Was a great game Sale v Maffra, Sale stopped to a walk in the last quarter and Maffra nearly ran over the top of them. There seemed to be a few guys running around for Maffra a bit short of a gallop Sale looked a lot fitter team. For a big name player Adrian Burgiel must have the worst number in country footy:-a very crookedly sewn on number 77 he must be supersticious or something. The game was by no means spiteful ,like is the norm in Sale-Maffra games ,i actually saw Horstman help Anderson up off the ground and give him a pat on the arse as if to say sorry in the last quarter that shouldn't happen.Overall great to see the maggies get up over the eagles for the first time in six years. No way known i'd be writing off the eagles as a serious threat just yet though, their lineup still contains too many class players for that.

Thanks for the comments Buster the Hawk, better than the juvenille comments from Joshuaa, see below, most the meatheads do have premiership medallions, some people do use this forum to get info on leagues they have a interst in, would be game person to write of eagles.
By the way Joshuaa i think you will find that Hayden Burgiel is married to Stuart Anderson sister and I would imagine both were attaching the ball the way you would expect in a clash of the birds, easy to sit in grandstand and make imature comments. Looks like a even season with Sale winning, warragul beating last years premiers and a close game in the other games.

Strangely enough i agree with you that my comments were imature, and i take them back ( although i do believe there are at least a few meatheads in the Maffra side!) But look i was just having a bit of fun, all in jest. Truth is though i have seen ( not so much Hayden) but Adrien Burgiel do quite a few dirty things on the feild and i dont like the spirit in which he plays the game.

Nice try but you are a bit mixed up Groenwegen. I think you will actually find that Stuart Anderson's sister is married to one of the Stobie brothers not Burgiel. Wrong set of famous Maffra brothers buddy!!

Still on the WGFL but changing the subject somewhat ,i've heard there is some rumblings from mainly the Sale & Traralgon district junior comps urging the league to scrap the U/16 comp as it is decimating the local junior competitions. For mine i reckon that would be a great idea because as usual it was only set up to appease the AFL's recruiting setup .Having kids getting up at 5.30 am if you live in Sale or Maffra to get to say Garfield by 8.00 to play at 8.30 is just plain ridiculous anyway.People would use the argument that the local comp isn't strong enough for the "elite" juniors of that agegroup but that is only because the West Gippy teams pick the eyes out of all the local junior teams hence dropping the overall standard of that comp.Any thoughts?
yeah the under 16's should be scrapped and let them play in their local comp

All good and well for towns who can support their own local league but the majority of the other clubs in the league can't. I don't think it is any coincidence that the two clubs kicking up a fuss are Sale and Traralgon (i.e. very strong local junior comps). These would be the only two who would vote for it (maybe Warragul) and were the only two who complained when it was initially put forward. All in all i'd be surprised if it happened, a big step backwards IMO.

is fairly strong and would cover the players from Morwell , Moe and also i believe Leongatha play in that comp and wouldn't teams from Drouin & Garfield play in the Warragul league?Surely its better for a young footballer just starting to really mature to play at a decent hour rather than early in the morning before the fogs and frosts have lifted.By creating another level of junior football elitism i have witnessed first hand (as a junior coach)the fact that the next level down ,i.e those that don't make the west Gippy squads or the so-called be-all &end all Power squads lose heart because already at U/16 level they are singled out as being just average and with no better players around them won't improve and that's just not right. In years to come if this elitism mentality keeps up that next tier down just won't be there at U/16 level.

You make some good points and I have noticed that playing in the fog and lifting the dew week in week out isn't good for the development of skills. I just don't think that the majority of clubs would have any problems with the current arrangement (bar Sale & Tgon, possibly Warragul) and therefore things will remain the same. Clubs seem to be able to bring through some good juniors and most sides in the league would currently be made up of players brought through from the current system. For mine that is the point of the U/16's and as long as it's working I think it will remain.

Looks like 06'is between Sale ,Maffra & Traralgon and then daylight.Morwell started to look OK kicking 34 goals in a big win over Drouin but come up the following week and get pumped by Sale by 15 goals with Jacob Schuback kicking eight from a forward flank.Heard Maffra are seriously chasing the sevices of a gun onballer from Sale City in the North Gippy now that it looks like the Bulldogs are going to be nowhere near the finals in that league this year.
Ive seen of ex-tralagon boys at the sunbury lions, a.gosling and a.fulton, how where these players when playing in the wglfl and r they missed by the club?

but Traralgon can't be missing them that much because they are still right up there and will figure strongly in the finals despite being beaten by Moe at the weekend.Incidently Sale are now clear ladder leaders after another big win against Leongatha on saturday. The maggies kicked 33. 27 .225 to the Parrots 6. 4. 40 with young full forward Chris Aurish kicking 11 goals ,the most from a Sale player in a game since Shane Loveless was regularly registering double figures weekly in the mid to late eighties.

Just wondering what has happened to Leongatha this season? The Parrots have been a traditional powerhouse in Gippsland footy in recent years and the result on the weekend would be the worst encountered by the club in many years.
Perhaps someone can tell me why the club is struggling?

game of the season so far this Sunday Sale Vs Maffra .The Eagles started slowly but from all reports have really hit their straps in the last few weeks ,should be an even contest with both sides easily ten goal at least better outfits than the rest of the comp.Ironic really considering that just four or five yrs ago the league was trying to get rid of them out of the comp and into the minor east gippy league. If these two teams play off this year i,m tipping a record crowd for the league as both clubs have a huge following in their local area.

Anyone know what is the all time record crowd for a country footy grand final ,because Sale play Maffra next week in the GF at Traralgon and this match will definitely give it a shake.Should be a great game too ,Sale just got home in the second semi but both teams have some big inclusions for the big one since then .Burgiel for Maffra and the Maggies CHF in Fowler is back for Sale. The close proximity of the two clubs gives a Carlton /Collingwood type rivalry that has been going on for years also even though this is the first time they have ever met in a grand final. Not bad for two clubs who the VCFL wanted to religate to the minors a few years ago because they wanted to extend the league closer to Melbourne and a couple of weak-arse West Gippsland clubs didn't want to travel east.

Are you talking $15,000 or 15,000 people. If you are talking people, you would not even be close. A gate of $30K is massive in our region.

I don't know how much it is to get in (probaly $12-15?), but 10,000 people at say $10 a head is $100,000. Even if they only got 5000-6000 you want get $50-60K probably more as i'm sure it's more then $10 to get in.
I play in a league close by and it is $10 for an adult. Im guessing prices would be very similar.

Locals have been waiting for this to happen for years and when talking about it always finished with "just imagine the crowd" since Sale has come good again ,even the home and away games have attracted a huge gate so much so that this year people have gone back to parking their car around the fence the night before ,haven't seen that happen since i was playing in the eighties. As much as i hate to say it, i think Maffra have got better form and should start as favorites .

From Leongatha, play in the AlbertonI played against the orange roughie's old man at Leongatha.Bit of a dilema ATM for you guys having to play against Wonthaggi all the time. They were strong in the gippsland Latrobe even before the two teams merged ,they should be shunted back into the stronger league ,but i don't know whether that will happen because the windswept joint is just too far away from anything really.
Well aware of the issue, I played in the 40 goal loss debarcle at MDU.
Does anyone know the scores from today's West Gippsland grand final between Sale and Maffra, or at least who won the game?
Thanks.

Was a great game all day with one end in particular favored by at least a five goal breeze.Sale got to within twelve points half way through the last quarter after an unexpected late rally into the wind ,but Burgiel #77 slotted a goal through that i doubt many in country vic would be able to emulate ,not once but twice ,the Sale boys dropped their heads ,game over.Between him and his brother they were the difference between the two teams.Maffra played well and so did Sale but the eagles had too much experience in the end.The Magpies have a lot to look forward to with the average age of their backline players around 17-18 yr olds.

Where do people think they will finish in 07.

Withers cleared to Balranald for $1500 a game. They won the flag last year and will win it again even without him.
Dean Caldow (Moe Coach) broke his leg against Warragul yesterday.. Huge blow. Probably done as a player I imagine, which is sad since he was so dominant.

I thought Balranald lost a few of their side from last year to Darnum.
PS Where does Balranald get its money from. They always seem to pay huge money every year.

That is Correct Goodie. A local up there is one of the top 5 or so biggest land owners in the country. it is in the middle of nowhere and have previously spasmodically paid obscene money for players. one noted year was in the late eighties when they recruited Jim Jess, Ron Andrews and both the Filo boys from Castlemaine. Christ i'm glad i wasn't playing footy then.
Legend has it that at the start of the year the coach asked this guy (who's name slips my mind) to go and get some players to win another flag. The coach replies,"what price do i start at?" the reply was,"Start at a thousand and work your way up until you get em."
Withers is in every sense, a professional regional footballer. from an outsiders perspective it seems that his Modus Operandi is to make as much money as he can from his footy prowess. Nothing wrong with that if your open about it. if you are offered a job that pays a truck load more money than what you're currently getting, you would be silly not to look at it. seems that this is what he's done.

He still is a great mark, and a great bloke. In a double blow, Adam Kennedy, the assistant coach and the strength of the team, dislocated his shoulder in the 2nd quarter, and Chris Smogavec, who played 207 consecutive senior games coming into the game, is hurt as well.
Ouch.

Sale play Maffra this week ,game of the round ,should indicate how good Sale are .Phil harris is in the 1st's ,they say he can really play,he must be alright for the maggies to make the effort to sign him while he was still in Fulham.Big unit for an aboriginal guy ,played WAFL at age 16.It's at Maffra and the eagles always seem to find a bit extra over there against Sale no matter where they are on the ladder or how well they're going.Tipping the maggies though by about 5 goals.

yeah right. game of the round. not warragul vs garfield? good one.Keep forgetting you guys are back in it ,for years Sale/Maffra was the only game that drew any decent sort of crowd even when sale were shit.Looks as though those two sides will be up there this year which is good for the league.I must say ,Warragul must have a different administration now because everybody at least down this end of the comp thought that they were as weak as piss for pulling out of the league when they did those few years ago now.Good to see them back. They were really strong in the eighties when i used to play but just seemed to drop away.I played my first ever senior game against the gulls at Western Park on a guy called Howard Cropley he was a real gun.BTW who's the guy in Warragul thirds who king hit the Maffra bloke when they played.Had a guy at work come up to me telling me to tell the Sale coach to watch this bloke because he's nothing but a thug.

Sale Vs Maffra is hands down the match of the round. Most probable Grand Final preview.

Whats the go with Garfield this year- did i see that they defeated Maffra on the weekend or the other week?? They were pretty ordinary over the past few years, and they seem to be going very well at the present.

Traralgon seems to have a strong 3rds side are there any players there that might make the step up to seniors this year ?

doubt it, the way garfield accounted for maffra on the weekend was quite convinving, now i dont follow the WGFL much bu i do know that warragul V garfield will be a far better match than sale v maffra.

The Gulls wouldn't even exist if they didn't change leagues those few years ago. Weak as piss or not, that administration is the reason that they are have been able to rebuild and are starting to become successful back in Gippsland Latrobe once again.
Good to see those Gulls going ok.

Good to see those Gulls going ok.Watched Warragul V Sale yesterday ,the maggies won by twenty odd goals.Did the gulls have anybody of significance out? i hope so ,hate to think that the next best teams from maffra and sale are that far behind.Home ground advantage obviously had a part to play but surely not that much.Sale were without Fowler their CHF and lost Hughes the CHB early in the game as well.

Sale v Maffra at Sale this sunday. Should be a huge crowd as long as the whether holds out. Winners should be Maffra in 4ths, Sale 3rds and toss of the coin for reserves and seniors

I heard both are looking for new VFL homes. With the Blues and Collingwood potentially getting rid of the VFL alignments it means greater opportunity.
