Dew Expects Different Port (http://afl.com.au/default.asp?pg=news&spg=display&articleid=254581)

Stuart Dew is adamant Port Adelaide will be a different side against Sydney at the SCG on Sunday than it showed in the second half against the Kangaroos at AAMI Stadium last Saturday night.

"We can't get any worse than the last half of round one (5.4 to the Roos' 11.8), so we look forward to sustaining what we showed in the first quarter (5.3 to 3.3)," Dew said at Alberton Oval on Monday........

Famous last words.

We expect a different Dew to the one that turned up last week.

Personally I was happier with the second half than the first. The first, we've seen all of before. Quick lead, followed by going into cruise mode too early, then backpedalling most of the game.

In the second half though (well, the last quarter), we actually saw some of our guys try and get a win from a position where we usually drop our bundle completely. Sure they didn't keep it up, but at least it was new and encouraging.

"I think the way we lost was due to the simple things, like hitting targets, missing tackles and a bit of stoppage work. It's definitely not the game plan because we didn't play like we wanted to play. We played how we wanted to play in the first quarter but we couldn't sustain it."

That's it. I bloody warned you!

Well Dew deserves all the criticism he cops.

Was so lazy and disinterested on saturday night. I think the best hope for Dew is if we go back to using the footy with a McDonalds logo on it, may get him a bit more interested.

Maybe Dewy's more worried about paradise by the dashboard light ... ;)

Reminds me of the book Graham Yallop wrote, that had a chapter titled 'Hogg on the Spit'. After Rodney Hogg read it, his comment was it should have been titled 'Spit on the Hogg'. :D

Stewy also said on Channel Ten news tonight that everyone has written us off because we lost round 1. He went onto say that 8 teams will come out losers after round 1 - will they be written off???

It would be nice to see in the papers that 8 other teams have already been written off because of losing their round 1 game like Stewy said. Why is it always the teal. black & white that get written off every year????

Weve played exactly the same way for 6 years. OF course its how we are going to play...they dont know any different.

Honestly I would rather our guys not bother making us promises.
We will be a different side for about 5 minutes on Sunday afternoon, and then on the one ground where kicking long would seem most beneficial, we will cramp ourselves up by standing still, chipping sideways and not running at all.
Notice how a side like the Crows play with so many loose men through the corridor. We don't seem to use the centre square at all for link up play - certainly not for fast breaks or play-on situations. We did in 2004, but the boundaries have become our neighbourhood in recent times.

We seem a mile behind the other sides in terms of skills, personnel, size, running ability, endeavour etc, etc.
I don't think it is first round blues at a loss - it is just that when we don't play on at all costs, we look so impotent.

Instead of planning for what the opposition is going to do against us, let's play to our advantages and strengths. We have long kickers in the side, and quick footed players in our Aboriginal boys. Let's use them. Kick long, and when the ball hits the ground be ready to swoop first.

Take risks boys. Play instinctively. Forget complicating it, and move the ball on forwards and run, run, run, run!!!!!!!!!!!

I must be stupid or something (quite everyone) because theres something I cant understand.

When we are behind and needing to score we go into this chip chip game and pretty much stop trying to move the ball forward. (isntthat where the bigstick are)

If as some say we've been playing this style for lots of years now, can anyone tell me when we have ever come back from the death with that style of play. The only time we looked dangerous at all in the second half was the first 5/10 minutes of the last quarter when we started bombing the ball into the forward line and running it.

As for the players constantly saying its not the waythey want to play - when I play football and aplayer breaks a team rule the coach yanks em to the pine for a few minutes and lets em know what they did wrong. How about every time a player chips the ball in defence to a player who is not able to break free immediately, they get yanked to the pine. Pretty soon they will stop doing it.

Throwing the ball around in defence is fine - but it should only be done to free up a man who can then move the ball forward down the free wing.

Until the team shows a demonstrable change in the way it plays, all this is spin. If they're going to try to spin us, it would be niche if they could find a way of doing so without using cliché.

Haven't you heard? This is now known as "The Choke". And, according to Rucci "it is brilliant". Apparently it was invented by Neil Craig in the off season.

No its not - I watched the brand new "Choke" last night - the concept is to keep possession, stem the flow and then take control yourself again.

Our method seems to be to try and get ourselves in deeper and deeper poop until we eventually cough it up in there half of the ground. Ours seems more like a dung beetle than a choke.

another difference - when Adelaide were doing there thing last night they actually looked like they had control of it .... when we try and chip itaround down back we look like rabbits in the spotlight ... and Kingsley wasnt even playing.

That's because our players weren't following instructions. That's not the way we play, remember? ;)

I definatly agree, but we STILL got done by 40 odd points when they were probably only a 20 point better side.

Although we staged a mini-fightback at the start of the last term, as so often happens in modern day footy, especially with our side, we made no impression on their lead and in the final 10 minutes when effort after effort to score came to no avail, we folded like a deck of cards again.

For once, I would love to see us run a game right out to the last siren, whether we are trailing or leading at 3/4 time.

Sandola
4 Apr 2006, 17:27
Especially if we're leading. I've only seen one person on here (and I can't remember who it was) note that we went into cruise mode halfway through the first quarter. It wasn't a result of newfound pressure from the Kangaroos (that came later), it was us running down the clock again -- only 105 minutes to go. We do that way too often.

As someone as pointed out Richmond have been pretty much written off, as have Brisbane. Fremantle would have been pumpelled in the media (probably were anyway in WA) if they had not scored the last 5 goals or so. Most pundits seem to have written Sydeny off before the season even started so the experts have taken thier round lost as confirmation of what they were saying previously. NO-one took Collingwood seriously to start off with.

Port has company. 5 of the 8 losing sides have more or less been written off for the season.

On 10 news tonight Andrew Jarman referred to it as "tempo football", the most exciting innovation in football in the last 5 years. Funny, when the supremely foot skilled Port teams of 2001-04 did this, it was referred to as chippy chippy sideways rubbish that was a blight on the game. Oh well, all a matter of perspective I guess. ;)

Just listening to the footy talk on 3aw, Dwayne Russell refers to the new Adelaide style as "beautiful". Apparently we're playing cutting edge footy, just not well enough. So I guess Choco won't give it up. I don't know how we're going to transcend the chippy-chippy element to get to the "beautiful" part. Practice, practice, practice.

For three or four years.

As the last couple of posts indicate, we did pretty much the same thing (Adelaide has refined it a bit) in 2001-2004.

However 3 things have changed in 2005/2006:

1) We no longer seem to have the footskills to carry it out.

2) We no longer seem to have the cool heads to maintain it.

3) We no longer know when to use it.

That being said I dont know we were ever as good as Adelaide was at it last night .... perhaps I'm just remembering the times it didn't work well.

Ford Fairlane
4 Apr 2006, 19:54
We did it for years and it was never called 'beautiful'. That's because we're not the 'lovely boys' from West Lakes ... ;)

What I noticed was that they kept the ball moving quickly, even though they were playing short. It seemed that not one Crow player had the ball for more than about 3 or 4 seconds whilst they were "choking". When we try and do that, we hold onto the ball for 15 seconds until the ump calls play on, then chip it sideways for another 15 second hold etc.

I'd just like to see the players going back to playing instinctive footy-whether they make mistakes or not. It seems like they're having to almost stop and think about what they should be doing according to Choco, instead of just doing what comes naturally.

"Just do it" boys.

portentous you're not suggesting the team should go out without a plan surely. I don't think a well coached side goes out and lets the players do whatever comes naturally. Football has become far more structured than in years past. I think the issue for our side is that where once we had a game plan that was cutting edge now other sides have moved past and can counter that style. Choco's response has been to adjust our style but we've seen in the trial games and round one some strong indications that the style may not provide the answer. I think the jury is still out but at this stage we should be worried.
