Journo: So, you'd be pretty disappointed with that result then...

Port player: Yeah, nah, I reckon we need to have a good hard look at ourselves.

Journo: It must be particularly worrying that you had so many short kicks and handballs tonight.

Port player: Yeah, nah, that's kinda just what happened. We didn't want to play that way, but that's the way it turned out on the night.

Journo: You say you didn't want to play that way....so what do you think contributed to you playing that way?

Port player: Well, every time we looked up, we saw Kangaroos players.

Journo: The chance would have been reasonably high - there were 18 of them out there.

Port player: Yeah, nah. Yeah.

Journo: So, just continuing on with that for a moment, I think your fans might be interested in understanding a little better why you guys played in a way you didn't want to.

Port player: Yeah, we didn't want to play like that you see. But they put players behind the ball, so we had to try to run the ball into the forward lines in a zig-zagging, chippy chippy way. We didn't like doing that. But they made us play like that.

Journo: So, would you say that at the moment Port is playing a little reactively?

Port player: Yeah, nah..... nah.

Journo: You wouldn't? So your fans can look forward to you playing a longer style game with faster movement of the ball in future?

Port player: That's definitely our plan. Yeah. Unless they make us play differently. Nah.

Journo: Thank you very much.

Port player: Nah, yeah.

.

Maybe if we didn't have loose men in defence all the time, we may have someone to kick to when we get the ball across half back. Why can't Choco just back our players a bit more, especially against teams like the Roos.

The thread was just a way of letting out a bit of frustration, but it is actually a more complex game these days, with the basketball tactics.

CHAD Cornes says Port Adelaide's stop-start style against the Kangaroos was an aberration - not an indicator of how it will play this season.

Cornes said the Power intended playing with flair but its players went against team rules by going short because the Roos played men behind the ball after it got off to a flying start by kicking three goals in the first four minutes.
The result was a mix of slow-paced, error-ridden football and almost as many short kicks (71) as long kicks (74). In contrast, the Kangaroos had 25 more long kicks (93) than short kicks (68), resulting in nine more inside 50s (55-46) and six more goals (19-13).

"That's not in our team rules (to play short)," Cornes said.

"We don't want to play like that. We're all about playing attractive footy, playing with flair and playing on quick but sometimes the game just doesn't unfold like that. It's a lot to do with what the opposition is doing.

"If they have extra players back you just don't want to kick the ball to them . . . and obviously we didn't have (Warren) Tredrea in the forward line to kick to.

"So it was hard to get that quick movement that we had in the first quarter."

Therein lies Port's problem. In its heyday - when it was clearly one of the premier teams - it was prepared to take its opponent on and back its quick style of play against anyone.

Now, with many of its best players departing in the past two years and questions over its side, it is trying to conjure up ways to win, rather than just backing itself in.

Just do it!
