View Full Version : Wangas Should Retire

Been an absolute gun and still has a bit to offer, but IMO there is no point in him playing out the year. At 32 he cannot have the impact he once could, and we'd be better of playing a youngster. Reckon he could pull the pin anyway if we are near the bottom come round 8 or so, which we could well be.
The fact that these comments are only appearing now leads me to believe that everyone's judging him on one game. In which case, i disagree with you entirely. Nothing tells me he can't make a reasonable contribution this season. He is not the oldest player in the AFL. Watching the game tonight? How's Riccuito going?

No he should not. If nothing else he can share experience with the young players, but I'm sure he'll be more than handy.
Nup. ablettjnr said it fairly well.

true, but remember he is still keeping a younger player out, and we still have experience on every line to help the younger players out. I also agree he will still be handy, but will he have the motivation to back up every week, in a struggling team? I doubt it. When do we play Essendon? I reckon whatever round this is, it will be his farewell game.

You are talking like your season is over. It ain't.
If he was going to have motivation problems, he wouldn't have played on this year. He had retired and was talked out of it. He will play the year out.
He doesnt need to retire. He had a dirty night. It happens. He shouldnt be played on the wing though. I still say put him in a forward pocket. At least he may kick a goal or two a game.
I don't believe I am reading this.
You're not, Paffy. It's all a dream. Roll over.

I don't want to see Gav retire, but the big hint might of been last season when he said he didn't want to go on.

Gav should give his decision to play on serious consideration ... not because he can't contribute, not because he won't play better than he did on Saturday night, but because he doesn't deserve to put his body thru another season's battering for a futile cause, with a coach who doesn't seem to know why he asked him to play on or how he was going to use him. Remember the promises of Primus being played almost exclusively as a tall forward in 2005? And how his reputation was burnt as he was continually played in the ruck, despite his struggles? Wangas doesn't need that and he doesn't need not to be able to play with his kids until Wednesday after a game because his body is recovering ... for what? A 10th place finish?
Still it's early days, the season may pick up, Wangas will certainly play better. But if the season does go pear shaped in this first month, I'd be inventing a long term injury for him to sit out on and bringing a rookie onto the list. After the 8 weeks evaluate how the season is going, and either make a retirement announcement or a decision to play on (but not every week). And if he plays on after that and Choco starts him on a wing again, get out while the getting's still good.

I'd love to see him in the forward pocket, permanently. Hopefully he can avoid much of the "wear and tear" down there and sneak a few goals.
We already have loads of youngsters in our side, and plenty of other players that warrant "dropping" before we consider Gav IMO.

what are people thinking this guy is a champ and still got plenty to offer

Not if he's played on a wing and half back though. Needs to play in the forward lines.
Or in the back pocket. I'd much rather have him playing on a small forward and doing kick-ins than Bishop.

Sorry for jumping into this debate late ......
But I can't believe there's a suggestion of Wanganeen retiring after one average performance.
Dump him in a forward pocket and there'd be plenty of opposition defenders snapping one off in their shorts.
You never lose your footy smarts - and Wanganeen is one of the smartest footballers you'll ever come across.
WTF?? I cant believe what Im reading on this thread. After one bad game by most of the team, people are saying that Wangas should retire.
Why not call for the retirement of other players that played liked cr*p Saturday night. Some of you are unbelievable. Give the guy a break and let him play out the season and then retire like he has planned to.

.....You never lose your footy smarts - and Wanganeen is one of the smartest footballers you'll ever come across.Yes but we aren't going to win the flag, or probably even play finals. Wangas has played his 300th now. Getting more game time into developing players is of more value to us.
I'm happy for some middle ground, give him a few more games but don't make him automatic 1st 22.

To say he shouldn't be an "automatic" on selection night is fair enough - but saying he should retire after one round is a bit much.
I still think he's got something to give. Sure, he's not going to have the impact he did a few seasons ago, but that doesn't mean he's of no value to the side. He could be very dangerous permanently lurking around the forward line.

Yes, Wangas shouldnt be an automatic pick on selection night but he will be looked at every week as he still has a lot to give this team.
If he feels that he should have a week off due to his fitness, I am sure that he will gladly advise the coaches that he wants a week off and let one of the youngsters step in. But I dont think that he should retire until the end of the season.

I'm not saying Wangas shouldnt be picked. If he plays the whole year, IMO he's one of the first picked every week. Yes he's one of a few that deserves a gold pass. Having said that I just really don't see the point of him playing if we are going to struggle.

Yeah, I think that's a thoughtful and very good post and I agree with your sentiments. I thought Gav's production last season was well down and if round one this season was any indication then he is a player much in decline.
I don't like to see champions running around playing if they no longer have it, and are nothing but a shadow of their former selves. Let's wait a few more weeks and if Gav doesn't pull his finger out then he should retire and make way for some younger bloke to have a go.

I thought wangas was talked into another season by the coaching staff. If that was the case, mentally he may not be on the park.
As for teaching the youngsters, he doesn't have to be on the park to influence young players. One on one sessions at training is quite acceptable and frees another spot to blood another youngster.
Bull********.
One on one sessions at training don't teach you about putting the body on the line when your opponent is actually trying to hurt you. They also don't show you how to drop back to the goalsquare when your `fullback' has left his post, and they don't show you that its ok to run off your opponent to a contest when you are 100% committed to winning it.
What players need to learn is genuine leadership and guts and what football is about, and you don't get that from doing a handball drill.

Double bull****** As much is learned these days from replays and verbals amongst coaches & experienced players. Its not a substitutes for action but another forum to get into the players head.
Dont dribble football rhetoric for the sake of it. A player can coach off the park as well as he can, on it.

I'm talking about setting an example and encouraging players to do the same. You don't do that in a one-on-one drill.

Like most elite sportspeople on the verge of retirement, I think he's just topping up the super fund a little...:)
