View Full Version : Tigers Spoon Plunge.........

VANDA
3 Apr 2006, 23:04
From todays Herald-Sun

The Tigers have firmed dramatically for the wooden spoon and are now firm favourites to finish last.

Richmond has assumed wooden spoon favouritism at $2.20 at TAB Sportsbet after Carlton's shock win against Melbourne. The Tigers were $8 for the spoon before Round 1. The Blues are now $2.75 for the spoon.

(NB: $8.00 into $2.20!)

One Centrebet punter will be on good terms with himself after placing $4000 on Richmond at $8 to win the spoon.

Bookies rarely get it wrong. Guess the message is get on now before they get into red figures.

Richmond a big chance.

wooden spoon in 2004. Then 10 wins in 2005, which possibly makes them think they are a bit better than what they are, hence they don't make as many changes to fix the problems...

...Very similar to Carlton in '05. The Blues had 4 wins in 2003, then (like Richmond) won 10 the next year, possibly making them think they are a bit better than what they are, and they were exposed the next year, finishing last. Similar to St.Kilda in 2000. The Saints went 10-12 in '99, and because of their success in '97-98, they thought they were better positioned than what they were (thinking that 1999 was an abberation), hence they didn't fix the problems. The result? A wooden spoon in 2000.

Also Similar to Hawthorn in 2003. The Hawks went 11-11 in '02, and because of their success in 2001, they thought they were better positioned than what they were, hence they didn't fix the problems. They "thought", in 2002 that they were a contender for the flag that just had a bad year, and didn't fix the problems of WHY they only went 11-11. The result in 2003? Four wins.

Richmond, Brisbane, Melbourne are the teams to watch for last spot, as they have most of the hallmarks of recent wooden spoon teams. Carlton won't get it. Carlton are the lazy person's pick to finish last.

I guess they're the most obvious choice considering the other cellar-dwellars, Hawthorn and Carlton got up, and Collingwood did OK for 3 quarters.

I'll be laying the Tigers on Betfair, in 3-4 weeks I'll guarantee another team will emerge as the favourite. (EDIT: Just checked, Tigers are 3.65, Carlton 2.82 for the spoon)

Seeing that this seems to be a Bomber-led thread (yet another one, Vanda!), I'll drop in an interesting stat that I recently posted on the Richmond Board.

These scores are taken from the first 8 weeks of the 2004 season and show how quickly Essendon turned around a terrible (and familiar looking) Round 1 scoreline :

Take special note of their respective opponents in Rounds 2 & 3 ... again very familiar for us Tiger fans.

Round 1.
Port Adel 2.6 7.13 15.16 23.20 (158)
Essendon 1.5 2.6 6.12 8.14 (62)

Round 2
St Kilda 3.5 5.10 7.15 13.16 (94)
Essendon 2.3 3.5 5.9 8.12 (60)

Round 3
Essendon 8.0 10.1 16.3 22.5 (137)
West Coast 3.0 7.5 15.8 20.11 (131)

Round 4
Essendon 1.3 5.8 13.11 17.15 (117)
Carlton 3.3 6.6 7.7 12.8 (80)

Round 5
Essendon 5.3 8.6 13.7 17.10 (112)
Collingwood 1.2 6.5 10.9 11.13 (79)

Round 6
Essendon 5.6 7.8 12.10 16.12 (108)
Sydney 4.3 4.6 8.7 15.8 (98)

Round 7
Essendon 5.2 10.6 15.7 18.13 (121)
W Bulldogs 3.2 7.5 11.9 14.11 (95)

Round 8
Essendon 7.4 10.9 14.11 20.15 (135)
Adelaide 2.4 5.6 7.12 12.12 (84)

So after sitting in 16th position with a percentage of 38 after Round 1, the Bombers were 6-2 less than two months later.

Personally I'd be more worried about the Tiges making the 8 if they were 8-0 after the first eight rounds. Far more likely to lose the last 14 that way.

If the Tiges get into a 4-4 position by round 8, they may actually finish the year off alright. All this talk of spoons and premierships after round 1 is quite amusing.

Well, we're damned if we do and damned if we don't then aren't we.

We've got all of these opposition nitwits poking and prodding for a reaction, fueling the flames of discontent, and then sitting back criticising all of the subsequent fireworks when a team's supporters engage in self-negativity and pessimism about their fortunes. And then we've we got dopey mofos from the wife-beating belt like yourself getting snitchy when supporters alternatively want to cast a bit of a positive light on an otherwise disastrous start to the season.

So what is it then? Should we denigrate our troops and start cutting throats after one s**tful loss, or should we bunk them up regardless and try and make a case for not throwing in the season?

Because, like all of the bottom eight teams on the ladder, at the minute it seems a no-win situation.

I'll try and steer clear of the trolls. Good post, but one thing you might have forgotten is that in 2004 Essendon played in six previous finals campaigns and still had a number of Premiership players (Johnson, Mercuri, Hird, Wellman, Solomon, Ramanauskas, Johnson, Lloyd, Misiti, Lucas, Alessio, Fletcher). We weren't the side we had a few years ago, but we still had a list of hardened, experienced campaigners.

I won't speak on Richmond, because honestly I'd rather wait more than one week before making a judgement, but we had the resources to drag us back up, not sure if Richmond do.

Well, we like to think we do, Longy, but your point is valid nonetheless.

We did go 7-2 last year over the first two months, though, so it's not like the Tigers are incapable of such a run. This stretch included wins over eventual premier Sydney, reigning premier Port, and Brisbane in Brisbane. We also dropped Round 11 by just a point against eventual R-U West Coast courtsey of some last minute Judd-magic.

Yep, no doubt you're capable. Any team in the competition is capable of putting together a stretch of good results.

However, confidence has always (from the outside looking in) been a big issue at Richmond. At Essendon we had a group of players who were experienced enough to handle all challenges thrown at them. If the confidence is shot at Punt Road, it might be a very hard thing to draw yourselves out of when you have a young list, a young captain (in terms of experience as a leader) and a dependance on bookends that seem to perhaps be past their best.

It will be interesting to watch.

In Round 1 in 2005 you played a team that missed the Grand Final by a couple of kicks the year before. Richmond finished last with no expectations. You scored 15 goals for the match. That in itself was a positive. You won the last quarter.

In Round 1 2006 you played a team that missed the finals the previous season. A team like Richmond that had expectations to move forward in 2006. You scored 7 goals for the match. You didn't fire a shot.

The fact that you beat the Bulldogs in Round 3 last year gives some sort of indication into the development, confidence and improvement of two sides that finished last season one win apart.

Does anyone dispute that the Dogs are several years more advanced than the Tigers? The Doggies are primed for success, yet it'll be at least 2007 before Tigers see any finals action. Greg Miller intimated as much earlier in the year, but few seemed to pay any attention.

The Tigers' future rests with the likes of Deledio, Tambling, Oakleigh-Nichols, Meyer, Pattison, Schulz, and yet they're all kids. We WILL be a good side, and we WILL see plenty of finals action, but it ain't gonna happen overnight. This is Plough's second year. Give the guy a break.

My post above was in response to the general thrust of this thread: ie, Richmond has a shocking first round result and hence they should be favs for the spoon. IT'S ONE GAME, FOLKS. Sure it was a shocker, but you can put that primarily down to attitude rather than a deficiency in talent. And attitude can quickly be turned around.

I'm sad to see what has happened to Lloyd. Apart from his diving, he's a great player and footy needs all the best players on the ground.

The only tools are most of these obnoxious Bombers fans who give their team such a bad name...Vanda you're a disgrace.

If you belive the Tigers will come last you don't know much about footy.

If you wonder why they have had a tough start to the season, look at the draw.

Tigers were always expected to struggle in the first four games.

The bookies know this, but wanted to suck dump punters in to giving up their money on a team that has an easy second half to the season.

Never think the bookie is on your side.

Amzing how the tide changes.

Brisbane is next at $4.50, followed by the Kangaroos at $4.50. Essendon is fourth favourite at $6 and then Richmond at $7. TAB Sportsbet took a bet of $9000 on the Kangaroos at $6 to win the wooden spoon.

He wouldn't need too. Just do a search on threads started by Wanda and you'll see a large amount on Richmond.

Now that is not so far fetched to imagine.

If the Roos are @ $6 after their start to the season the bookies are kidding themselves and asking to potentially lose money as they may in the case of the punter in the article.

Not saying the Roos will certainly finish last, but gee it's definately within the realms of possibility at this stage.

Punters' paradise: Judd all rage for Brownlow

IN A similar vein a month ago punters were queueing up to take the $2.60 on offer for Richmond to win the wooden spoon.

The Tigers are out to $26 for the not so coveted award with TAB Sportsbet.

Bookmakers believe the spoon is now a race between three teams – Carlton, Brisbane and Essendon.

The Blues are into $2.50 with TAB Sportsbet to make it back-to-back spoons but will shorten even further if they lose to Essendon next week.

Brisbane is second favourite at $3.75 with Essendon at $4.50.

Only problem is.............your Club is not that good.

A complete nonsense response from you really that is only designed to inspire a false hope in your fellow supporters. I hope you also posted on your Board the numerous occaisons in which some Clubs havnt managed a win at all or perhaps only one win in the first 8 rounds of a season????

Doesn't look so nonsensical now.

Wanda is officially the laughing stock of BF. she has started so many threads that have been dug up this year by Pie, Tiger and Hawk supporters that every word she says is now bookmarked for future ridicule. we were so disappointed when it looked like she was gone - every town needs a bike
