View Full Version : 2007 Cleanout & Deledio captain

I remember when Denis Pagan became coach of a struggling Nth Melb. in the early '90's, the first thing he did was clean out the old dead wood, and made Wayne Carey captain at an early age.

Is it finally time for Richmond to finally do the same thing? We're going nowhere with most of these old hacks playing for us. Get rid of all of them, yes all the oldies who have let us down all these years.

Make the future of our club Deledio the captain. He's up to it already. He's a gun.

Get rid of Richo. Yes it's time to go. He can't kick for goal and has never had the footy smarts. Let's face it Tiger fans, he's had 12 years to realise his potential and has never got there. His time is up.

Get rid of Gaspar, Chaffey, Stafford, Bowden (both), Richo, Knobel, Rodan, Johnson (he's not up to AFL captain standard), Krak, Hyde, Tivendale, Kellaway.

And only draft players with footy brains & smarts.

It's time to bite the bullet.

Yeh, sure, lets get rid of any kind of leadership we currently have, and any experienced players, and watch the club fold after we suffer 100 point losses every week.

What, you propose we dump all those mentioned players and replace them with draftee's?

For example, who will actually do a better job down forward than Richo? Pattison? No chance, chuck Clever Hughes into the deep end where he's obviously to raw? Schulz could possibly become a good forward if he doesn't have brain fades like friday night, but then, especially with Bowden gone, who covers our backline? Ray Hall, who although gives 100%, clearly doesn't have the skill level of Bowden or Schulz.

Deledio will be 19 turning 20 at the start of next year, you can not put a 19 year old as captain of a club, no matter how advanced he may be.

If we stand anychance of developing into a good side, we need to bring players such as Thursfield, Hughes, Meyer and Polo into the side WITH experienced bodies around them.

Keep the following experience - Simmonds, Brown, Cogs, Newman, Hall, Tuck, Hartigan, Pettifer.

Get rid of the rest of the old hacks, and play the draftees.

Joel surely makes that list of experience to keep, you can't have a defence of 20 year olds. They need a leader, and despite what people may say, Joel has those qualities, he is a good player. Hartigan isn't an experienced player, either.

I can see where you are coming from though, and understand why you would feel this is necessary, but lets not come to crazy conclusions, such as fielding a team of 20 year olds.

A team of 20 year olds would have more heart than this current rabble that's going no where.

How will you feel if (when?) we get spanked by the Saints by 15 goals?

Like the heart we saw from Tambling, standing on the outside of packs?

Gutted, as always

Not every young player has the heart, desire and skill of a Deledio, Cooney, Griffen. Ocne, and it's sure to happen, the other teams get on top of the young group, their heads will drop straight away.

what have we got to lose?

Maybe our club? Save Our Skins anyone?

A trait which is painfully obvious in the current playing group.

at the moment that is over reacting to one game. 21 still to go and we may just turn it around. if by round 6 we are sitting 0-6 and got spanked more often than not, then by all means play the kids.

it isn't 1 game that this mob have let us down...many of these senior players have been around a very long (and miserable) time.

What happens if Deledio does a knee?

Alot of 18 year olds running around with not much clue.

Stupid idea - its too late to go full youth now.

Should have been done from day 1 when Wallace came on board.

Yeah smart thinking. Let's just get rid of all our senior players and put in 17 year old inexperienced, under developed kids to mix it with the big boys next year. Let's see how far that will take us. Just crazy.

No...since the 82 grandfinal our win/loss % is probably about 20. :(

Exactly, we have no senior onfield leaders so we might as well start developing them

I agree to some extent. Yes we have a serious problem at the club with the some of senior players just good enough to be playing afl footy. I dont think having Lids, Bling, Danny, Patto etc subjected to these lazy and unskillful habits from the senior players week in week out is teaching them correctly. But we cannot delist or trade every senior player, however i think this yr is the yr where career's will be finshed. I think if there is any question marks over players ability then we have to bite the bullet and flick them.

one thing wrong with your theroy is while lids will be a good player he will never be a wayne carey and may struggle with captaincy at a young age

Yes he will never be a true CHF, but in terms of ability, Deledio could end up at the end of his career just as good as Wayne Carey! Brett is 18 years old and looks like our most professional, and capable player. He has leadership written all over him!

Following on from what Terry Tan has to say, obviously getting rid of all the experience players is a no go zone, it would absolutely kill the younger kids playing week in week out, not to mention after one bad game people forget Joel Bowden has won our last two best and fairests!!!

I agree though, that Gaspar, Kellaway, Chaffey, Tivendale etc are not particularly up to it and we should look to move these types on!
