Langer or Martyn?
Bit of an argument going on here with my brother. Need the BigFooty folk to settle it once and for all :p
Your kidding right? Its clearly Langer.

Yeah I would say Langer. Martyn has been very good and should be proud, don't let the recent criticism cloud your judgement.

Langer has definitely got the most out of himself, that's for sure. Martyn has a great average and has had a great career but he's been close to being dropped a couple of times...Langer's spot has always been safer

Langer has had the best career. Who is the better player? I think Martyn.

Langer has been consistently good, despite 1 bad patch, and has to be the winner here.
Martyn has had a good career too looking back at what may have happened. Been dropped several times and somehow gets back in out of nowhere but performs. A top player.

Martyn's wasted most of the immense talent that he has
From the golden yet petulant and arrogant little kid of early 90s, he could amount to nothing more than what he's done. Other people might be more than satisfied with the career he's had, but Martyn's ability demands a hell lot more than that
A ********ehouse attitude kinda put paid to what at the time was predicted to be one of the great careers.
He's a massive underachiever, and a ********ehouse, and his career cannot even be compared to that of JL's

That's over the top I think Cooldude. He has had a quality test career, perhaps if the bar wasn't set so high around him by the likes of Ponting and Langer (100+ tests and 20+ centuries is simply outstanding) it'd be more obvious that Martyn has been a great performer for Australia over the years. Yes, he was a very highly rated youngster but not every player is ready to be thrown into the deep end at a young age and in hindsight, Martyn was probably just out of his depth at that time. To his credit he toiled away in domestic cricket and earnt his stripes the hard way.
A better question would be Damien Martyn or Michael Slater.

He has more talent in his crappy index finger than Langer has in his entire body
Anyone who's seen Martyn play at an early age and even now would know just how unbelievably gifted he is. Natural talent wise, he ain't far behind Ponting
So what I said isn't over the top, apart from one massive year, he's been underachieving big time. Perhaps he himself doesn't set his own bar of expectation too high for himself.

martyn doesn't have a bad attitude and he has only underachieved because of selectors treating him like crap. In his best i think he is better then most and if people had had faith in him his career would resemble pontings. Amazing talent and yes he has underperformes because of immense talent.
yeh but as for careers i'd go langer

Langer hasn't been dropped ni the last year, unlike Martyn.
Stupid question.
Stats might say JL but stats don't mean that much.
Do people realise they dropped Langer for Martyn on the 99 Ashes tour.
Martyn came in and scored a Couple Centuries... one at the first match.
Langer only came back later because Slater has some midlife crisis.
Marto highlights -
2004 India and Sri Lanka test series.
World Cup Final.
Ressurected twice after being Crucified twice.
Langer- ?
Flat track player.

Langer is an underated champion
Martyn is a great player who hasnt reached his capabilities.
Langer easily
I wonder how Martyn would have looked with the same figures in another countries team .I think his acheivements dont look so good when placed against the Aus giants of the last decade yet in another team they would be great .
Personally he is one of those players I never really notice

Junior wasted his talents even more than Marto did, underachiever

I'd say Langer just, partly due to a bit of luck in selection and the timing of his centuries to keep him in the team giving him an extra 35 tests over Marto
