Jesus, an impossible question. He's one of the few directors to deserve a top 5 (or even top 10) list.

Personal fave:

Taxi Driver

Just Beneath:

Mean Streets
Raging Bull
Goodfellas
New York, New York
King of Comedy

Underrated:

Casino (the dark, ugly, side of the Goodfellas dream, where strutting gangsters go to Vegas and lose their souls)

Age of Innocence (an exceptionally touching, restrained work, dismissed by fans because of the lack of gunplay, but showing that Scorsese - with the help of Edith Wharton - can bring us 1870s New York and its complicated social networks as vividly as 1970s New York).

Knew I could pick one! Sorry!

My top 5-
1. Taxi Driver- An absolute masterpiece. Neccesary viewing for everyone
2. Goodfellas- As close to perfect as a movie could possibly be. Shows how good Scorsese is when it is debated this isnt he's best work. Perfect cast and perfect score especially. The only reason I have Taxi Driver first is because I feel it has more meaning.
3. The King of Comedy- Picked this up cheap the other day. I was expecting a good film but I heard it wasnt really Scorsese's best so I thought it probably wouldn't be the greatest. IMO it's a masterpiece. I can understand why it may have flopped at the box office. Audiences where simply not ready for it. This film was made 20 years too early but I can't see why this is still gone unknown compared to the rest of his work. DeNiro's performance is unbelievable.
4. Casino- Another underated masterpiece. Great performances, unfortunatly was compared too much to Goodfellas. Mabye in the same way as King of Comedy to Taxi Driver.
5. Raging Bull- A masterpiece no disputing I just don't find this film as enjoyable as other films he's made
Haven't seen= Any of his films before Mean Streets, Alice dosn't Live here Anymore, Newyork, NewYork, The Last Waltz, After Hours, the Colour of Money, Temptation of Christ, Age of Innocence, Kundun and Bringing out the Dead (man i've still got a lot to go)

Goodfellas is fantastic!

Age of Innocence is also very good.

I like the look of Gangs of NY, but it just doesn't really work as well as it should, but it's still a decent picture though.

Same with Kundun.

Goodfellas hands down.

Taxi Driver is a great film, and hits a different note than Goodfellas. Explores the seedy, twisted, disturbed way of low lifes, rather than the brazen, cavalier, extroverted life of a ganster.

Both are hard hitting, but you need a rest after watching Goodfellas. From go to whoa the film doesn't slow down. In my top 3 films ever.

He hasn't produced a movie that I could say I really like. I think his documentary on Bob Dylan is probably the best thing he has done.

Um....NO.

Weir is a talented, middlebrow creator of high taste. Picnic is a great film, but compared to the physical force of Scorsese's cinema, he's practically Merchant-Ivory.

There aren't many living directors greater than Scorsese. At least, not American.

Damn, I think I damaged the back of my head after I fell off my chair laughing my a$$ off...

...In response to the topic - Taxi Driver, but it has tough competition. Perhaps one of the finest performances by an actor ever. Goodfellas a close second, followed by Raging Bull. And the King of Comedy is a great film - it's just lost in the fact that it's not as good as his other work, and didn't gross much at the box office. Another of De Niro's great performances.

But, it's a tough question. In terms of "overall great movie", probably Taxi Driver or Goodfellas. In terms of direction, probably Raging Bull.

Why has no-one given an honourable mention to Cape Fear?

I hate re-makes, but this was a ripper. Max Cady is all the more scary because Scorcese made two great changes re the lawyer to the original story, which was bloody good anyway.

See you have reinforced why to me Goodfellas was the better directing effort.

Raging Bull was basically a solo movie for De Niro and quite rightly won him an Oscar. Yet Goodfellas was a superb ensemble trio of Pesci, De Niro and Liotta. For Scorcese to get 1 great performance was great, but to get 3 great performances is even better

I saw the preview for The Departed the other night. Liked the cuts they showed, saw it was a Scorcese film - I was getting pretty keen on seeing this film until Leonardo DiCaprio appears in what must be a major role.

My interest in seeing the film suddenly drops down to DVD rental status:(

Damn you Scorcese! Stop toying with my brain.

Gangs of New York must have been one of the most polarising films ever made. You are not alone in rating it quite highly.

I suffered through the whole movie. Long, disjointed and pointless. Maybe I caught it opn a bad day, but I won't watch it again to find out.

Just went and saw the Departed today.
One word sums it up= masterpiece
After GONY and Aviator Scorsese is back in his best form. The Departed is up there with Goodfellas, Raging Bull and Taxi Driver. For those of you who cant stand Leo you better stay away he is brillant as is Matt Damon but the real standout is Jack Nicolson he is pure evil and pure watchable. Also great are Martin Sheen and Mark Walberg of **** it the whole cast simply rocks he even gets a great performance out of that fat black guy who seems to be in all the crap comedies coming out over the last few years.
Go see it this is easily the best film of the year so far and let me tell you if Scorsese dosnt get the oscar here well its time someone rioted on Oscar night.
The last 15 minutes will just blow everyones mind!!!

No American can ever recreate any Hong Kong movie without turning to ****. The Departed is a decent movie, would rate it as one of the 20 best American movies I have watched, problem is none of these 20 would rate in the best 80 movies I've seen in my life.

Asian/ European cinema >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>American.

If you are going to watch Infernal Affairs, watch the trilogy in order from 2, 1, 3. Best 6 hours you'll ever enjoy.

In regards to Scorcese, I would rate it his best, but then I have hated every single one of his movies. Yes, even Goodfellas.

Anyone notice Scorcese's penchant for using Stones music in his films?

Mean Streets - uses Jumpin Jack Flash when Johnny Boy is in the bar meeting a mob boss

Goodfellas - when Henry Hill is driving in the car and the police helicopter is following him Monkey Man from Let it Bleed is playing

Casino - uses Sweet Virginia from Exile on Main St, Heart of Stone, and Can't You Here Me knocking from Sticky Fingers

The Departed - uses Gimme Shelter from Let it Bleed, and Let it Loose from Exile on Main St. Also Di Caprio sens Damon a copy of some taped evidence inside a cover of Exile.
