View Full Version : Do we all rate Ponting over Tendulkar and Lara now?

Just curious, I know he is in magnificent form atm and if he does this in the Ashes I'll say he's best after Bradman, but after flattening a middle of the road side do we think he is the 2nd best batsmen ever?

No, those two are still better at their prime

Yep, tend to agree - very hard to split the 3 of them.
Prior to this amazing run of form he was still considered a great batsman, but, this run of his currently has definitely ranked him (in my books) in the highest echelon of batsmen in the world ever.

All three are good. Ponting's been great but he only had the #6 and #8 in the world attacks to contend with and if the Saffies could catch 3 of those tons wouldn't have eventuated.

It's just so hard to say he is better than the greats of modern day cricket, (but now we are in 2006, not 1996). When you think about it after watching cricket for 10 years, you say, Lara and Tendulkar are in their own class, but thinking again, Ponting has arrived there. Ponting will be remembered as one of the best players of all time.

Definitely, past 6 Tests he's received from extraordinary luck
Plus Lara and Sachin in their prime have belted way better attacks consistently

I think it's easier to rank Sachin and Lara lower now that they're past their prime. That's the main reason many rank Ponting above them now

I think I could fit your cricket knowledge onto a leaflet.
Ponting doesn't deserve to be rated on the same level as the other two, nor does Kallis or Dravid. Any intelligent, non pathetically biased Aussie fan will attest to this.
He struggled bigtime earlier in his career hence being dropped all of 1000 times.
1. There were world class bowlers around that he had absolutely NO IDEA facing
2. The pitches weren't made to spoonfeed batsman with obvious technical deficiencies 100's
Lara and Tendulkar have and always will be rated higher than any other batsman of this era, and rightfully so.
Besides,

Some people are 'stats' fans. And those particuluar people stand out. Put it this way if you put 4 genuine cricket fans in a line-up and 1 imposter, most intelligent fans could pick out that imposter without thinking twice.
Quality is the key.
Lara and Tendulkar have it in abundance that Ponting doesn't.
Wait. Do you here that?
I think I hear Curtly coming, watch out Ricky!
Yeah good idea better split, go and find Mervyn Dillon and Ian Bradshaw and get some of those flat track runs of yours.

btw Ian Bradshaw isn't that bad.
I rate him. Especially as an ODI bowler and he hasn't really been given the chances at test level.

You can't go back to that old argument. He can only score against who he plays, break down who lara and tendulkar score runs against.

Ponting never had to face Warne or McGrath.
McGrath owns Lara and has a very good record against Tendulkar as well.
But Lara and Tendulkar have dominated Warne.

Perhaps we need to make Ponting go and play with another country so we can see if he would score runs against Aus

Like Ponting, both Lara & Tendulkar have both struggled for form during their careers too (albeit for a short time).

i remember Lara had a stinker of a tour in england some 5 years ago when they were spearhaded by Caddick, so does that make him any worse? no it doesnt.
as for Pontings bad form in the ashes, 155 wasnt a bad effort for a guy who struggles against quality bowling
is for ability id put Tendulkar at the top.

Over their careers - Ponting not quite there yet. Another couple of years performing the way he has and he will be. If he keeps going Beyond that he'll surpass them.
In terms of current form, well he's the best batsman in the world nad has been for about 18 months.

In my opinion, Ponting is the greatest batsman of the modern era...
Ponting is definatly the best of the three for me.
Tendulkar is finished as a test match batsman. He manages to pull some good performances out of the fire every now and then but has overall been a complete dud for India in test match cricket since the tennis elbow problems started.
Lara is a slowly fading force I think. Still brilliant, still very destructive but sides fancy him now.
Ponting is without doubt the most feared batsman in international cricket at the moment. Absolute gun.

What about Mike Hussey?
Didn't you read the other thread about how he's better than Ponting?
It was an incredibly compelling argument. Their averages were compared and everything.

You're right. Lara and Tendulkar produce 10-15 years of outstanding cricket yet once they go through a bad patch towards the end of their career they are 'gone for good'.
Ponting is without a doubt the best batsman now of the three, obviously past history has no credibility at all ...

Some of you have to take your Aussie bias glasses off. Ponting is a terrific batsmen and has been probably the best batsmen for the last 18 months. However he doesn't compare to Lara and Tendulkar and won't for quite some time.
We all saw how Ponting went when the pressure was on the Ashes, he was facing some decent bowlers and the pitches weren't roads taliored for batsmen.
For me he has to prove himself against the best [not the West Indies and Sth Africa], but against Inida in India, against a full English pace attack and in general the better teams of the world.

i'm not biased... i can see that tendulkar and lara are better but by the end of his career i think his stats will read better....not nesecarilly making him better batsmen but people will rate them equally at worst. I think his style of play is what most people like

Ponting has the runs on the board already...this garbage about needing to dominate an all spin attack on spin prepared dustbowls in India is just plain garbage ...as for handling the poms he made 150 odd to save a test if i remember correctly ...anyone who says Ponting is not equal or better than lara and Tendulka are biased or just plain ignorant

Why not argue the on the other foot? Why not bring up the specifically prepared pace bowling wickets you see at the Gabba/Wacca? Why not mention the 10,000 odd runs scored by both Lara and Tendulkar in the Test Arena? No-one is denying Ponting isn't a fantastic batsman, perhaps the ignorant one is the person who calls others ignorant for putting forth their point of views? ...

You are the most biased poster on this board. Everytime someone criticises Australia you jump on them and say their point of view is crap and you know all.
The one thing that Ponting will never have to do is face Warne and McGrath. And from what I've heard McGrath had it over him when they were playing at the academy.

Interseting. Australia tour India last and are given a green track in Nagpur. Any country tours Australia and they are given concrete pitches in the Gabba and WACCA especially prepared for Australian pace bowlers, namely Brett Lee.
Dont talk about things you have no clue about.
