View Full Version : Best live acts you've actually seen live.
My favourite memories would be:
Smashing Pumpkins, 1998, Melbourne Park. (Touring on the "Adore" album).
Radiohead, 1998, Festival Hall. (Touring on the "Ok Computer" and "The Bends" albums).
Augie March, 2000, The Athenaeum Theatre (Touring on the "Sunset Studies" album).
Gomez (early) 2000, Hi-Fi Bar (Touring on the "Bring It On" and "Liquid Skin" albums).
Yo La Tengo, 2000, The Prince of Wales Hotel (Touring on the "Suddenly nothing turned itself inside out" and previous albums).
Even, 1999, Punters Club (Touring on the "Come Again" album).
As well as . . .
You Am I . . . in the "best of" shows they seem to knock out every time they play! ;)

cant go past The Prodigy '98.
Most amazing live experience ive ever witnessed....doubtful it will be beaten in my eyes.
Jebs, numerous occasions. So much energy, they just rock.
Paul McCartney in 93 was great.
Micheal Jacksons History tour was also fantastic, the ultimate performer and entertainer.
KISS. Missed the first one (too young :( HEY! I don't get to say that too often on here!!!!:) )but the next 3 were amazing!

Um.......one guess who I thought they best band live were??
PANTERA! May 2001, although Phil put in a really **** performance, I have never seen a band who are as tight as Pantera are live. Vinne, Dimebag and Rex are better than anyone on stage in my opinion, and I try not to be biased in saying that.
And when Phil is on song, the show is even better. He may have been ****house at the Melbourne show, but I still loved every minute of it!

Matchbox 20, Melbourne Park, November of 2000. It was the day of my year twelve health exam, so was a great way to release tension! They played a good mix of both albums and, yeah, sounded awesome.

Yes Shinners I was there, front and centre. Thet played for about 45 minutes and it was just awesome, from the fist click of Darren's drum sticks to the final riff from East Bay Ray's guitar. Crowd figures ranged from 500 to 2000 depending on who you talk to, but I can tell you it was crowded at the front. I manged to walk away with a chipped tooth ( thanks to Jello's mike) and a big graze on my neck (thanks to Jello's boot) and I bloody well wore those marks with pride. I also went to a party with the boys after the show and they seemed really cool, although I met Biafra again in 1994 and he seemed to have a big chip on his shoulder.
Anyway, that show still ranks number one with me, for sheer brilliance and energy plus the fact that I know I'm lucky to be one of the few to claim this as truth.

Thanks for that Santos....it sounds like an amazing experience. I was a DKs fan in my teenage years, but I haven't listened to them in ages. I think that even if the Dead Kennedys toured Australia and if I was old enough to go at the time, I would've been too scared to attend.
I don't think Jello is on speaking terms with the other former Dead Kennedys....they've been fighting over royalties. The other members released a live recording (not approved by Jello or Alternative Tenctacles) and I've seen a (bootleg?) live video of the DKs on sale at Missing Link Records here in Melbourne. I'm not sure if they'd have it at Big Star Records in Adelaide though.

Likewise, also missing out on seeing the Pumpkins on their first Australian tour, for the BDO is a fairly sizeable regret!

The Cure were hideous. Boring, dull, insipid, uninspired. Did we really need that 10 minute long guitar solo smack bang in the middle of "Primary"?
Massive Attack was just a lighting show, and we sat on the sidelines, and so, we didn't see it to full effect.
The other thing to keep in mind is that I usually hate stadium shows (only the Pet Shop Boys have ever impressed me on that scale).

Radio Birdman at the Prince of Wales Hotel 1999 (I think)-their second time around on the reunion circuit was awesome. Much better than the first as they had to work harder and played so hard-a real pleasure to watch
Blue Oyster Cult-Ventura California 2000-Blown away by how good these guys were live. One of my all time favourite bands, played only good songs from their 70s period (as opposed to some of the shockers they recorded in the 80s).
Dead Moon-All Melbourne Shows 1996-This band is a husband and wife team, with a friend on drums. They are led by Fred Cole, who first started playing rock n roll in the early 60s and is still going strong today. Tough as nails, garage punk
Other great live bands, Celibate Rifles, Kiss, Iggy Pop (especially at Big Day Out 1992), the Seminal Rats, Ron Asheton from the Stooges, Wayne Kramer from the MC5, the Ramones, Alice Cooper, the Powder Monkeys, Cosmic Psychos, the Hitmen, the New Christs, the Freeloaders, Sugar Shack .....

HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was at that show and it was absolutely awesome. Chad from RHCP jumped on drums for a couple of songs, with Dave playing drums as well and Taylor on vocals. They were in a really good mood and played for over 2 hours, and despite the fact it was unbearably hot (it was a show during the BDO tour 2000) it was a sensational show. Made even better by the fact Motor Ace and The Hellacoptors were the support.
Other great live shows:
AC/DC - Living End - Rod Laver Arena, March 2001.
Foo Fighters - Ammonia - Festival Hall 1998 (they had 2 drum kits so Dave could play a couple of songs :) )

Living End - Area 7 at Hi Fi Bar 1998

Obviously the best live band/all round show that I ever seen was KISS. I think they rip everyone as an allround experience sound and light/interaction show, once I saw them in Wembey Arena (not the stadiium) and at one point we all had to put on 3D glasses and look at the massive screen and they were belting out music to them poking guitars at us the whole crowd was screaming it was wild.
Pumpkins in 98 Adore tour I thought were sh#t. much better in earlier tour.
Radiohead are good live (twice in Paris 2000) but nowhere near the overall experience someone like KISS give you.
Metallica in 93 awesome, AC/DC in 94 (??I think it was) absolutely rocked, 2nd best live band I've ever seen. Actually no they're 3rd, Pantera at Festival Hall in 93 or 94 was 2nd, absolutely insane the place just went totally fuc#ing wild like nothing I've ever seen before, that was intense.
Anyone who saw Pantera live in the earlier day would know what I mean.

Jamiroquai - at the Metro in Melb in about 95.
Mr Bungle - at the Palace in about 97. (i can never the dates if these things...)
The Tea Party - at Festival Hall in about 98 or 99. I had what should have been the worst sounding seat in the place (yes, SEAT!) in the back right corner - but it was still probably the best sounding show i've ever seen. Or should that be 'heard'? :) I couldn't see much from back there....but it didn't matter.
Nikka Costa - at the Punters Club in about 98. They, and she, absolutely rocked. I love(d?) the Punters!
Midnight Oil - at any number of places. I'm not a huge Oils nut but i have a mate from school who still calls up every one or two years to see if i want an Oils ticket. I always go, as Garrett is always interesting, i get a chance to catch up with my mate, and the band absolutely rock. Easily my favourite Australian rock band. Awesome live band. If you haven't seen them live, do it!
I can't remember the rest. I suppose i've seen many awesome bands at the Big Day Out & such festivals over the years, along with tiny little bands in tiny little places all over the place. Actually, At The Drive-In deserve a mention as they were awesome at last years BDO. Powderfinger (many years ago opening on the main stage well before they sold their souls to footy clubs across the country) Shhitloads more that i'll never remember because i was probably too drunk or something.
Best
Cathedral, Joey's (Prahran), 1998 - in front of only 30-40 people!

Deep Purple, FLinders Park, 2001

Rammstein, BDO Melbourne, 2001
Screaming Jets, Mercury Lounge, 2001
Not Bad
Tool, Festival Hall, 1998
Kiss, Flinders Park, 2001
Rock Symphony, Colonial Stadium, 2000
Hmmm
Pearl Jam, Flinders Park, 1999 (boooooring)
Tool, Flinders Park, 2001 (paid $72 to watch a video)
BDO Melbourne, 2001 (apart from Rammstein)
Falls Festival, 2000 (that was just $hit)
Pissed off that I missed :
Iron Maiden 1992 - no money
Cathedral 1999 - there was NO publicity and I didn't know they had been here until I read a review of a gig in Richmond on the net a few months after the tour.
Devin Townsend 2001 - didn't get into his stuff until about two weeks after his tour and auto graph signing session, so I didn't get my CDs signed because I hadn't bought them yet :o
I've also seen many bands that play regular gigs around Melbourne - Pegazus, Speed Kings, Vanishing Point and Cyclone Tracy are the most regular. Pegazus are by far my favourite of that lot.
There's whispers about that because of the success of the Megadeth and Judas Priest shows at a smaller venue, promoters are much keener to bring old warhorse bands like Iron Maiden out to Australia. One can only hope! :)

Adore would almost be the Pumpkins' best album, IMO.
The show was a magnificent example, of a band turning up, and playing a great selection of songs, from a great album. The band, along with accompanying musicians, were all pretty relaxed, and there was more a sense of "playing a few songs in the park", rather than your "armageddon, pyrotechnics rock (****) show".
I'm spewing that I missed the Pumpkins when they played the BDO. The BDO shows (mainly Melbourne) were supposed to have been some of the best they played, and up there with some of the best BDO acts every seen.

I thought the 'Pumpkins' were great at their BDO shows, but the band which blew me away on that particular show was 'The Breeders'. I hadn't been a big fan at all, but I was just dumb struck after their performance...............simply fantastic.
Other BDO performances I liked (there are lots, but these were standouts) were RATM, 6 Foot Hick and Ministry. Ministry just blew me away from the first riff of 'just one fix'. They were the reason that Adelaide BDO's are now volume controlled to the point where unless your right down the front, it's just too quiet.

Julian Lennon, Mercury Lounge, 1998. Brilliant. :D
Re : Smashing Pumpkins
I think in 1998 they did lean a little too heavily on the Adore album which they toured on the back of. From memory the album had barely come out, so as good as it was, there wasn't really any time for the fans to learn the new stuff.
It was a great show and I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would, and was glued to my seat throughout, especially during Corgan's long improvisations.

I've actually got a bootleg of the show they did live, for Triple J on the tour. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find it for a while. :(
Although it wasn't as good as the Melbourne show, it certainly for me, was an example of a band reproducing an exceptional album, with an exceptional live display.
Gee, I'd love to have a bootleg of the Melbourne show!
Although, the songs were still true to the album version, they also took on a life of their own live. While the show was fairly relaxed, and more like a "show in the park", the songs still managed to become as dramatic, and engaging in operatic terms, as any other show that I've seen.
The album itself takes a while to get into - and perhaps for this reason, repeated listenings to the live reproduction is necessary to fully appreciate all of the intricacies and brilliance that the shows had to offer.
There were rumours at one stage, that the band, the original four, actually re-recorded Adore, with Chamberlain on drums, as well as some other different arrangements. I'm not sure how much truth there is in this rumour. It's also hard to say whether I'd be able to appreciate the album or not - considering I regard it as a classic in its current form. I guess it could prove to be somewhat of an addition, and complementary aspect to a good formula.
Perhaps it would be similar to listening to the album live. LIke Pink Floyd's 'The Wall', perhaps Adore is one of those albums in which different versions of the same production can be seen/used in a complementary sense, rather than songs being written with the intention of being played "live", or on "radio", or on an "album".
I also heard another rumour, that there are plans in the future, to re-release all the Pumpkins albums, most with additional songs, however, Adore having been planned to have been done from live takes. If so, this would be an exceptional piece to listen to (as long as they got the good takes, I suppose).

In no particular order:
Skyhooks: Reunion tour 1990
Rose Tattoo: Support act for ZZ Top in 1987
TISM: 4 times, 2 BDOs, Liberty in Hindley St and Thebby Theatre. Always good value.
Rammstein: BDO 2001
Happyland: BDO 1999
Pink Floyd: 1988
Hoodoo Gurus: Farewell tour
Midnight Oil: seen em 3 times, but the best was undoubtedly 1990 at Memorial Drive
INXS: Calling all Nations tour, 1988 at Memorial Drive
The Sharp
Kiss: 1997 (better than the farewell gig IMO)
Neville Bros
Janice Joplin (awesome)
Dr John
BB King
Bob Marley

Little Feet
I'll think of some more modern ones

Were you there? If so, tell us all about it.
Or did you watch it on TV?
In August 1980 my Father took me to see Heart at the Forum in Los Angeles. Damn those girls could rock. They had just released BARRACUDA, and everybody in America was going apesh*t over that song. The guitar riff is unreal. They also played some of their earlier hits such as MAGIC MAN, EVEN IT UP and CRAZY ON YOU. It was a great concert and all their songs sound so much better live.
About six months later Heart's Greatest Hits was released in Australia, and second side was all live tracks including BEBE LA STRANGE from the Forum in August 1980.
Best: Underworld @ '99 (or was it 98?) BDO Melbourne
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion @ Palais 99
Faith No More @ Festering Hole each time I've seen them
Primal Scream @ Palace & BDO 2000 :) :)
Portishead @ Festering Hole (incredible sound for **** venue) 1998?
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds @ Forum 1999?
Jamiroquai @ Metro (I thought 1993) went with Gphonque!
Einsturzende Neubauten @ Berlin Columbiahalle 2000
Blur @ Monash 1998
Worst: Dire Straits last tour @ Tennis Centre - boooooring
Massive Attack @ Festering Hole (how such a great GREAT musical group could be so sucky is still a mystery to me)
Chilli Peppers @ Tennis Centre with Dave Navarro (as opposed to 92 when they ROCKED)
My Humble Opinion.
Really not sure about some of those dates.

Were you there? If so, tell us all about it.
Or did you watch it on TV?
I was there brotha! Best night out ever. I ended up spending the entire weekend in Sydney as the concert was supposed to be on the Saturday, but bad weather forced it to be prosponed 'til the following night.
It was brilliant! The highlight for me was their final song ... fittingly ... "Don't Dream It's Over". Still brings a shiver down my spine. Totally awesome!!
Nothing i see will ever beat that!! :)

Cheers for that TopDon. I'm very envious of ya.
"Don't Dream It's Over"......no matter how many times I hear that song, it still sends a shiver down my spine......

Yep, Crowded House "Farewell to the World" was an awesome concert. Probably the best I've been to. Closely followed by Kiss.
Honourable mentions would go to Tool, ACDC, GnR and Metallica.
The Alice Cooper Trashes the World concert was better than I expected it to be, as was INXS in 1988.
I've seen Fear Factory twice and didn't like them much. I've gone off them in a big way now.
That's my 2 cents worth!! :)
In no particular order;
The Rolling Stones, MCG 1995
AC/DC, Tennis Centre 1988, The Party Boys opened for 'em and were brilliant.
The Giants, Rose Tattoo, and The Angels on the 'All Hell Breaks Loose' Tour 1998, The Palace.
Buddy Guy, Old Greek Theatre 1990.
The Angels, some pub in Frankston, can't remember the name 1987.
George Thorogood and the Destroyers, The Palace 1992.
Lobby Lloyd and The Coloured Balls, Prince of Wales Hotel, 1998.
Chain, Prince Of Wales Hotel, 1998.
Deep Purple, Tennis Centre 1999.
Iron Maiden, Festival Hall 1985.
Twisted Sister, Festival Hall, 1985.
Motorhead, Festival Hall, 1985.
The Black Crowes, Festival Hall, 1992.
Russell Morris, Broadford, 1988.
The Johnnies, Broadford, 1988.
Cold Chisel, Tennis Centre, 1998.
Cosmic Pshycos, Prince Of Wales Hotel.
The Celibate Rifles, Prince Of Wales Hotel.
Countless other pub gigs.

I have only really seen three or four bands live. They were all very good though.
The Offspring- Bloody brilliant
The Living End- Played before AC/DC and they were fantastic, played all their classics as well as a few newies of 'Roll On'
AC/DC- Well they lived up to their reputation with a stunning sound and light show and great music.
Beach Boys- Well believe it or not I was actually a big fan of them when I was a youngster, pretty good concert even though there wasn't really any seats in the place apart from about 100 metres from where they were playing

Agreed Mandy Kiss are a cut above the rest.
Wanted to go in 81 @ V.F.L. park but wasn't allowed :(
Saw em in 93 or 94 @ Flinders park the best concert I've been to! The Poor were great as support too.
97 gig was good especially cause of Ace Frehley being back though the performance was't that brilliant, had a crap seat too :(.
This years was very good also they put on a real show & played most of the ones I wanted to hear and played them well. Nice of em to put God of Thunder in the setlist too as I HATE that song and it allowed me to go out for a smoke :). Screaming Jets did a great job as support, set was waaaaaaay to short however.
Also enloyed
Megadeth (Palace 2001)
Judas Priest " "
Rammstein (BDO 2001)
Powderfinger (Festy 2001)

Not a huge fan of Maiden, but read yesterday that they will be working on their new album next year, so it won't be until 2003 at the earliest I'm afraid.
I saw them in the early 90's, and they were pretty good!
Ramones - you should spew you missed them! An almost religious experience!
I remember seeing them at the Hordern as a young impressionable 15 year old (87?88?), and it CHANGED me (for the better! ;) )
RIP Joey. :(

I saw Siouxsie and the Banshees in Sydney in 1993 and they were just fantastic. Siouxsie is just an incredible presence on stage, and her voice, considering it was the end of a world tour, was very strong.
I really wish I had have seen them at the 100 club in 1976. A lot of punk musoes say their 15 minutes version of the Lords Prayer (mixed with Smoke on the Water) was the high point of Punk Music.
