Live report - quarter 1
Brisbane were the first to go forward, but Fletcher was there to easily take possession and rebound for the Dons. A turnover by McPhee then gave Brisbane back the ball, and they went back to half-forward.
Brisbane then lined up for goal first, but a long kick was off-target and through for one behind.

The bombers then got some running play going off half back, and it was the spark the side needed. A good chain of passes through the middle ended up with Bradley kicking long inside 50. The ball carried the pack and Angus Monfries was there to rove well and kick the first goal of the night.

Brisbane then almost got the quick reply, going inside 50 and Akermanis taking possession. He had a quick snap shot for goal, but it was just wide for one behind.

The Bombers then followed up with the second goal of the match. Initially Mal Michael did well to beat Lloyd at half back, but then he lost possession and the Bombers made the Lions pay. Jason Johnson swooped on the ball, handballed long to Lloyd, who then strolled in and kicked his first goal of the game.

Brisbane then went on the attack, after Stanton was penalised for a deliberate out of hounds on the wing. But the Essendon defence stood up tall, and were able to get out of danger.

Stanton then sent the Bombers long inside 50, but the Lions had the numbers and they were able to clear quickly. Some good courage in defence then by McPhee forced a contest and a throw in resulted in the Brisbane forward pocket. Essendon then steadied, and were able to rebound out to the wing.

Brisbane kept up the pressure, and then received a free kick at half forward after a Slattery push in the back. The Lions were starting to attack more, though, and the pressure eventually paid off. It was Sherman who received the ball in the forward pocket and booted Brisbane’s first goal of the night.

The Bombers won the next centre clearance, and went long inside 50. But Brisbane tied things up for a ball up. The Lions then moved the ball quickly into attack, and the pressure was back on the Bombers.

This time Brown was able to get involved in the play, and he was able to out-mark Bradley at full forward. He went back and kicked his first goal of the night from only 20m out directly in front.

The Bombers then went forward and Lucas fought hard to get things going Essendon’s way. But the Brisbane defence was on top early, and they cleared with relative ease. Brisbane once again went long inside 50, but this time Bradley was able to take a solid overhead mark and kick clear out to the wing.

A free kick to Heffernan at half forward then enabled the Bombers to go inside 50. But yet again the Brisbane defence were able to regain possession and go back into attack. A quick kick from the pocket by Ashley McGrath hit the post and scored one behind.

But it wasn’t long before Brisbane had the next major on the board, and it was first-gamer Hooper who did the damage. He received a good handball inside 50, and ran on to kick the goal from 30m out.

The Bombers were under great pressure from the Lions towards the end of the first term, as they again pressed forward. But some tight defending from Fletcher and McVeigh saved the Dons.

Essendon then moved the ball into attack, and had a long shot on goal through Lovett. But his kick dropped short and Brisbane were able to mark.

The Bombers then attempted another forward attack, but nothing seemed to be working up forward for Essendon approaching quarter time.

Brisbane then went forward and it ended up with Brown marking deep in the forward pocket. He went back and kicked across the face of goals for one behind.

But Brisbane weren’t done with, as they went into attack a final time for the quarter and Bradshaw marked 50m out. He went back and kicked the Lions fourth goal after the siren to give them a 17 point lead at the first break.

Pre-match comments: Hello and welcome to this Round 2 clash between Essendon and Brisbane, live from the Gabba.

The news from Brisbane is that the teams will line up as selected, with no changes to either side.

BRISBANE LIONS:

Live report - quarter 2
The Bombers were the first to attack in the second term, and a quick kick by Camporeale inside 50 found Lloyd who marked 40m out directly in front. He went back and kicked his second goal of the night to give the Bombers good start to the second quarter.
The Lions then answered by going straight into attack, but the long ball was marked very well by Bradley drifting across the pack. McPhee then did well to mark in the centre and kick the Bombers inside 50. But the Dons couldn’t mark and Brisbane rebounded quickly. It ended up with Akermanis marking inside 50, but his kick for goal was off target for one behind.

It wasn’t long before Brisbane had the answering goal, with their forwards putting on huge pressure. It was Power who took possession for the Lions at half forward, steadied and kicked the goal from 40m out.

But the Bombers then settled, and went forward from the centre bounce. It ended up with Lovett marking well on a long lead, 40m out from goal. He went back and kicked the Bombers’ fourth goal to reduce the margin to 12 points.

The Lions then went forward and had a long shot on goal through Charman. But his kick dropped short and Solomon punched it through for a behind.

Essendon then worked the ball up the ground, with Mark Johnson kicking long inside 50. From a throw in Hille did well in the ruck, and then Dyson received a free kick for holding deep in the pocket. He ran around to improve the angle and booted his first goal of the night.

Brisbane won the next centre clearance, but were forced out wide and a throw in resulted. A free kick to Brisbane at half forward then saw them kick inside 50 to Bradshaw, who marked 40m out on a tight angle. Bradshaw went back and kicked long, but it was off target again and another behind resulted.

A free kick to McPhee on the wing then gave the Dons a chance to go forward, with Monfries kicking the Dons inside 50. His kick was perfect, and found Hille only 15m out directly in front. He went back and kicked Essendon’s sixth goal without a behind to reduce the margin to only 2 points.

Brisbane went forward from the centre bounce, but good defending by McVeigh forced the ball out for a throw in. The Bombers had lifted, and Lucas took a strong mark on the wing before kicking long inside 50. But a free kick for holding gave Brisbane the chance to steady and get out of trouble.

They made the Bombers pay, immediately taking the ball forward. It ended up with Power who ran to 45m out and kicked a good goal on the run.

Brisbane won the next centre clearance, but Solomon was there to mark for the Dons. He kicked out to the wing, but it was out on the full and Brisbane came back hard. This time it resulted in a goal to Brown, as he roved the ball well off a pack. Lions by 14 points.

Essendon won the next centre clearance, and Heffernan marked well at half forward. But his kick inside 50 was chopped off by Brisbane, and they loaded up again.

But the Essendon defence was able to regain possession, and it was the Bombers’ turn to attack. The Dons went inside 50 and Monfries was again involved in the action. Camporeale then kicked high to the goal square, but the Brisbane defence were able to mark and slow things down.

Brisbane then looked dangerous as they moved into attack, and only some desperate defending saved another Brisbane goal. They pressed forward again, and a quick snap shot for goal by Charman went across the face for one behind.

The Bombers then found some space and moved the ball well up the wing. Dyson then kicked the Bombers inside 50 and a fantastic mark by Heffernan saw him line up for goal from 15m out. He went back and kicked the goal from only 15m out and kept the Bombers in the contest just before half time.

Brisbane won the next centre clearance, but the Bombers won the ball back at half back through Heffernan. Brisbane then won back possession and then a perplexing umpiring decision saw Heffernan mark the ball but a free kick award to Brisbane.

Then just as Essendon were kicking long inside 50 the siren sounded, giving Brisbane a 9 point lead at the main break. There was a bit of pushing and shoving after the siren, but eventually the players went off the ground with quite a bit of feeling evident in this clash.
